Speaker: Pastor Caleb Joshua
Topic: The Revelation of Jesus Necessary to Keep Your Lamp Burning
Text: Matthew 16:13-19
Though people were coming to him, some to be healed, some to be feed, some for deliverance, yet not many knew him. Since they could not come to the revelation of who He was, they could not have eternal life which was the very reason he came.
- people come to Church for differs reasons. Jesus to them is one of the prophets, one of good guys. Though in Church but far away from the Lord.
Who do you say the son of man is? This question is one that requires a personal revelation of Jesus Christ. It's not enough to know him from the lips of people, or from the generic perspective. He wants to be known personally.
It is the father that revealed him (through the Holy Spirit) so that He, (Jesus) can reveal the father.
Christ: is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew "Messiah" meaning "anointed". It designates Jesus as the fulfiller of the Messianic hopes of the Old Testament and of the Jewish people.
When God wants to use a man in the O.T they will anoint him, meaning this one has God's approval, trust or acceptance to fulfill his works and plans. So Jesus being the anointed of God means that the eternal plans of God is to be accomplished through him.
Noted: Jesus as the son of God exited in the eternity without beginning while the Christ of God who is eternal in character begins with eternity with beginning. Psalms 110:1
*- through God's son we know God himself and through God's Christ we know God's plan and are partakers of it.
- So the Church is of those who have understanding of God's eternal plan.
- unless we possess this revelation of Peter of the Rock, we will not be part of the Church even if we have been in Church for many years.
Vs 16 Peter was attesting to the fact that Jesus is God, and He is the Christ that they have been anticipating.
* What is the significance of this revelation?
a) Vs 17a True spiritual blessing. There are great blessings in knowing Jesus. Peace because he is the prince of peace.
Peter's response was personal, and the blessing was personal and specific "Simon Bar Jonah".
Our response to this revelation is declaration, confession or profession of who He is.
* Until Peter spoke up, he was not declared blessed. So blessed are you whom Christ has been revealed and who professes what He is.
- the earth needs to hear this profession, situations need to hear this declaration...
b) Vs17b It reveals our connectivity to God through the Holy spirit. Jesus revealed the source of Simon's revelation about Christ from the father : through the spirit of the Father.
And declared that it is upon this foundation of truth " this rock", the Church is built.
C) Vs 18 You have the revelation/Understanding of your identity in Christ. Peter petros " a small stone"
Rock= " a large stone" Jesus Christ revealed
Some of us don't know that we are forged as stones built upon the Rock (Christ)
1Peter 2:4-5,7,8 The metaphor reveals the believer nature in terms of endurance, resilience, perseverance, strength and lasting value.
Solomon's temple had a picture of the Church; made up of living stones shaped to fit into the kingdom work
1Kings 6:7
The Church built on the Rock
Jesus needed to come to this very place Caesarea Philippi, because he intended to make a statement about the building of His Church
A building made Not with rod and block and cement but with living stones: Men that respond to God in obedience and to the devil with resistance and great opposition.
