My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today, as we celebrate Our Lady, Mother of Africa, the Church gives us a powerful and quiet moment from the early days after the Ascension of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
The apostles have just witnessed something overwhelming—Christ has ascended into heaven. And what do they do next? They do not scatter. They do not fall into confusion. Instead, they return together… and they go up into the upper room.
This upper room becomes more than a physical place—it becomes a place of waiting, of unity, and of deep prayer.
Scripture tells us: “All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer.”
Not some of them. Not occasionally. But all, and with one heart.
And in the midst of them is a quiet but powerful presence—Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
Now reflect on this: the same Mary who said “yes” to God at the Annunciation… the same Mary who stood at the foot of the Cross… is now with the apostles, praying with them, strengthening them, guiding them—not by loud words, but by her faithful presence.
This is why today we call her Mother of Africa. Because just as she was present with the early Church, she is present with us—our struggles, our hopes, our nations, our families.
In Africa, we know what it means to wait on God. We know what it means to pray together in unity. But we are also reminded today: we must not lose that unity.
The apostles were different men—different backgrounds, different temperaments—but they were united in prayer. That is where strength comes from. Not in noise. Not in division. But in prayer and togetherness.
And Mary teaches us something very important:
You don’t always need many words to be powerful in faith.
Sometimes, your presence in prayer… your quiet trust in God… is enough to change everything.
My dear friends, today’s message is simple:
Stay united
Stay prayerful
Stay close to Mary
Because when we pray together, God prepares us—just as He was preparing the apostles for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
So as we honor Our Lady, Mother of Africa, let us ask her:
Mother Mary, pray for us.
Teach us to trust like you.
Help our continent to remain strong in faith, united in love, and faithful in prayer.
Amen.
