ACTS BIBLE STUDY | Acts 1:15-26
The Message of Acts 1:15-26
This passage presents a unique and sometimes debated moment in the early Church: the selection of Matthias to replace Judas. While the method (casting lots) is not prescribed for us today, the principles behind their action provide a profound model for seeking God's will as a community under the lordship of the risen Jesus.
· Facing Reality with Scripture (v. 15-20): Peter stands to address about 120 believers. He does not ignore the painful betrayal of Judas but frames it through the lens of Scripture (quoting Psalm 69:25 and 109:8). He shows that even the tragedy of betrayal was foreseen and encompassed within God's sovereign plan. This allows the community to move forward not in confusion, but with theological understanding and clarity.
· Discerning the Necessary Qualifications (v. 21-22): The criteria for an apostle are specific and grounded in the historical reality of Jesus' ministry. The candidate must have been a companion of Jesus from His baptism by John until His ascension. This underscores that an apostle was first and foremost a personal witness to the entirety of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. The role was about testimony to facts, not just spiritual insight.
· Seeking the Lord's Choice in Prayer (v. 23-26): Two candidates meet the criteria: Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias. The church prays a specific, direct prayer: "You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen." They acknowledge God's omniscience and His sovereign choice. They then cast lots, a recognized Old Testament method for discerning God's will (Proverbs 16:33), trusting the outcome to Him. The result is clear, and Matthias is enrolled with the eleven apostles.
🙏 Prayers to Encounter Jesus in Acts 1:15-26
1. Prayer for Wisdom to Interpret Circumstances Through Scripture
Lord Jesus, when I face confusion, loss, or difficult transitions, teach me to follow Peter's example. Lift my eyes from my limited perspective to the sure truth of Your Word. Help me to interpret the realities of my life through the lens of Your sovereign plan and promises. Let Scripture, not my emotions, frame my understanding.
2. Prayer for Discernment Rooted in Your Truth
Lord, You set clear criteria for Your apostles. Give me and Your Church today discernment that is rooted in Your truth, not just in personality or preference. In all decisions—great and small—help us to first seek the qualifications that align with Your character and the mission You have given. Guard us from choosing based on mere outward appearance.
3. Prayer for Submission to Your Sovereign Choice
Sovereign Lord, You know all hearts. I surrender my own plans and preferences to You. Like the early Church, I pray: "Show me which You have chosen." Guide my steps, my decisions, and the life of my community. I trust that You are leading, even when the method is unfamiliar to me. I submit to Your lordship in the outcome.
💡 For Your Reflection
When facing a decision, do I first seek to understand my circumstances through the truth of Scripture and pray, "Lord, show me Your choice," or do I rely primarily on my own reasoning?
A practical step: In a current decision, write down the biblical principles that apply before listing the pros and cons. Then, pray the prayer of Acts 1:24, surrendering the outcome to the Lord who knows all hearts.
