TOPIC: BALANCING JUSTICE AND MERCY

BIBLE READING: JOSHUA 20:1-6
(The Holy Bible, New International Version).

JOSHUA 20:1-6
[1] Then the LORD said to Joshua:

[2] "Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses,

[3] so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.

[4] When they flee to one of these cities, they are to stand in the entrance of the city gate and state their case before the elders of that city. Then the elders are to admit the fugitive into their city and provide a place to live among them.

[5] If the avenger of blood comes in pursuit, the elders must not surrender the fugitive, because the fugitive killed their neighbor unintentionally and without malice aforethought.

[6] They are to stay in that city until they have stood trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then they may go back to their own home in the town from which they fled."

WORD FOR TODAY:
“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: “Appoint for yourselves cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses, that the slayer who kills a person accidentally or unintentionally may flee there; and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.” Joshua 20:2-3 NKJV

‎‎‎INSPIRING COMMENTARY:

According to Stephen Wellum in his book, thinking biblically and theologically about Justice, God’s justice is not arbitrary, but is grounded in His perfect moral demands. As the ultimate Judge, He condones no sin and judges all sin according to His law. The cross of Christ demonstrates God’s justice, where Christ bore the punishment for humanity, satisfying God’s justice and enabling humanity’s redemption.

God’s mercy is a fundamental aspect of God’s character, rooted in His compassion and kindness towards humanity. It informs Gods plan for forgiveness, restoration and God’s offering of redemption and reconciliation to those who repent and turn to Him. This is usually described as an unmerited favour – a gift not worked for.

God’s justice and mercy is balanced through the cross of Jesus Christ: where Christ bore the punishment for humanity’s sin, satisfying God’s justice and demonstrating His mercy. Through this redemptive plan, God provided a way for humanity to be forgiven and restored while upholding His justice and supplying his mercy in ways that humans cannot fully comprehend.

How do you balance justice and mercy in your life, family, workplace and ministry today?

PRAYER:
Lord please, help me to balance justice and mercy in my life’s endeavours in Jesus name.

TOPIC: SPIRITUAL APATHY

BIBLE READING: JOSHUA 18:1 - 10
(The Holy Bible, New International Version).

JOSHUA 18:1 - 10
[1] The whole assembly of the Israelites gathered at Shiloh and set up the tent of meeting there. The country was brought under their control,
[2] but there were still seven Israelite tribes who had not yet received their inheritance.
[3] So Joshua said to the Israelites: "How long will you wait before you begin to take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your ancestors, has given you?
[4] Appoint three men from each tribe. I will send them out to make a survey of the land and to write a description of it, according to the inheritance of each. Then they will return to me.
[5] You are to divide the land into seven parts. Judah is to remain in its territory on the south and the tribes of Joseph in their territory on the north.
[6] After you have written descriptions of the seven parts of the land, bring them here to me and I will cast lots for you in the presence of the LORD our God.
[7] The Levites, however, do not get a portion among you, because the priestly service of the LORD is their inheritance. And Gad, Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh have already received their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan. Moses the servant of the LORD gave it to them."
[8] As the men started on their way to map out the land, Joshua instructed them, "Go and make a survey of the land and write a description of it. Then return to me, and I will cast lots for you here at Shiloh in the presence of the LORD."
[9] So the men left and went through the land. They wrote its description on a scroll, town by town, in seven parts, and returned to Joshua in the camp at Shiloh.
[10] Joshua then cast lots for them in Shiloh in the presence of the LORD, and there he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their tribal divisions.

WORD FOR TODAY:
“Then Joshua said to the children of Israel: "How long will you neglect to go and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers has given you?” Joshua 18:3 NKJV

‎‎‎INSPIRING COMMENTARY:

At this point, there were seven tribes that their inheritance has not been marked out for them. Nevertheless they were slow to respond to the challenge of taking over their possession, in v.3 Joshua had to say to them, *“How long will you be slack to go in and take possession of the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you?”* (Joshua 18: 3 RSV). Unlike Caleb and the daughters of Zelophehad, these tribes didn't have faith and spiritual zeal, but showcased *spiritual apathy.*

Spiritual apathy refers to a lack of interest, enthusiasm, or passion for spiritual practices, growth, and relationship with God. The symptoms include feeling disconnected from God or men, struggling to prioritize spiritual practices (such as prayer, bible reading), feeling emotionally unresponsive to spiritual things and becoming too comfortable in one’s spiritual state.

The antidote to spiritual apathy is continuity in your personal commitments to the Lord without any break. This continuity was described in Acts 2:42 as “Devotion to the apostles’ teaching...” (ESV). As believers we need to continue steadfastly in our devotion to God and keep our attention fixed on Jesus Christ.

PRAYER:
Lord, I need your help to keep my gaze on you, the author and finisher of my faith, till the end in Jesus name.

TOPIC: THE DAUGHTERS OF ZELOPHEHAD

BIBLE READING: JOSHUA 17:3-6; NUMBERS 27:2 - 11
*(The Holy Bible, New International Version).*

JOSHUA 17:3-6; NUMBERS 27:2 - 11
[3] Now Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah.
[4] They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, "The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives." So Joshua gave them an inheritance along with the brothers of their father, according to the LORD’s command.
[5] Manasseh’s share consisted of ten tracts of land besides Gilead and Bashan east of the Jordan,
[6] because the daughters of the tribe of Manasseh received an inheritance among the sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the descendants of Manasseh.

NUMBERS 27:2 - 11
[2] and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said,
[3] "Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no sons.
[4] Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives."
[5] So Moses brought their case before the LORD,
[6] and the LORD said to him,
[7] "What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.
[8] "Say to the Israelites, ’If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter.
[9] If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers.
[10] If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.
[11] If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.’"

WORD FOR TODAY:
“And they came near…saying, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” Therefore, according to the commandment of the LORD, he gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers.” Joshua 17:4 NKJV

‎‎‎INSPIRING COMMENTARY:

The daughters of Zelophehad were not given any inheritance since they were females and their father had no Son. The prevalent culture allowed only the male children to have access to the shared inheritance and they were at the verge of losing their entire family inheritance until they took the bold step which inspired the topic of today’s devotion.

Their story inspires today’s believers to be bold, persistent, trusting in God’s goodness and sovereignty. So, what did they do that brought about this sharp turn of events in the default culture of the people?

They approached Moses and the leaders of the congregation and peacefully explained their matter, then Moses took their case to God and God told Moses that they were right. The record in the book of Numbers 27: 1 – 11 gave a clearer picture.

Some of the lessons believers can learn from their actions include:
1. *Speak up for what is right:* Advocate for justice and fairness in your family, workplace, church / fellowship and society at large.
2. *Trust God’s sovereignty:* Recognize and acknowledge God’s control and provision in life.
3. *Prioritize family and legacy:* Value family relationships and legacy.

PRAYER:
Lord, please help me to speak for the less privilege and those in darkness in my surrounding in Jesus name.

TOPIC: SPIRITUAL BOUNDARIES

BIBLE READING: JOSHUA 15:1–12
(The Holy Bible, New International Version).

JOSHUA 15:1–12
[1] The allotment for the tribe of Judah, according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom, to the Desert of Zin in the extreme south.
[2] Their southern boundary started from the bay at the southern end of the Dead Sea,
[3] crossed south of Scorpion Pass, continued on to Zin and went over to the south of Kadesh Barnea. Then it ran past Hezron up to Addar and curved around to Karka.
[4] It then passed along to Azmon and joined the Wadi of Egypt, ending at the Mediterranean Sea. This is their southern boundary.
[5] The eastern boundary is the Dead Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan. The northern boundary started from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan,
[6] went up to Beth Hoglah and continued north of Beth Arabah to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben.
[7] The boundary then went up to Debir from the Valley of Achor and turned north to Gilgal, which faces the Pass of Adummim south of the gorge. It continued along to the waters of En Shemesh and came out at En Rogel.
[8] Then it ran up the Valley of Ben Hinnom along the southern slope of the Jebusite city (that is, Jerusalem). From there it climbed to the top of the hill west of the Hinnom Valley at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim.
[9] From the hilltop the boundary headed toward the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, came out at the towns of Mount Ephron and went down toward Baalah (that is, Kiriath Jearim).
[10] Then it curved westward from Baalah to Mount Seir, ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Kesalon), continued down to Beth Shemesh and crossed to Timnah.
[11] It went to the northern slope of Ekron, turned toward Shikkeron, passed along to Mount Baalah and reached Jabneel. The boundary ended at the sea.
[12] The western boundary is the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans.

WORD FOR TODAY:
“On the other hand, don’t be gullible. Check out everything and keep only what’s good. Throw out anything tainted with evil.” 1 Thessalonians 5:21 – 22 MSG

‎‎‎INSPIRING COMMENTARY:

Spiritual boundaries refers to the limits and guidelines we establish to protect our spiritual well-being, faith, and relationship with God. Spiritual boundaries help us to: discern or distinguish between healthy and unhealthy spiritual influences, guard against spiritual harm and prioritize on what nourishes our spiritual growth.

Joshua chapter 15 talks about the boundaries of the land allotted by Joshua to the remaining nine and half tribes of the Israelites on the west of the Jordan River. The boundaries of each tribe were carefully highlighted and described. Boundaries tell us the exact perimeter of the property belonging to someone.

This applies to the believers spiritually. Do we have spiritual limits, demarcation and boundaries as believers? Here are some examples of boundaries we should keep:
• Regular communication with God through prayer, studying and applying the Bible teachings and following God’s commands and principles.
• Treating others with love, compassion, and respect; surrounding oneself with supportive, like -minded individual; and being cautious of false teachings or unhealthy influences.
• By managing thoughts, emotions and actions; resisting temptations that compromise faith and values; prioritizing spiritual practices like meditation and prayer.
• Building relationships that encourages spiritual growth; being wise in interactions with non-believers; and practicing forgiveness just as Christ forgave us.

Are you keeping your life within these boundaries?

PRAYER:
Lord, please help me to be within the limits you have provided for me.

BIBLE READING: JOSHUA 14:6 – 15.
(The Holy Bible, New International Version).

JOSHUA 14:6 – 15.
[6] Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me.

[7] I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,

[8] but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear. I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.

[9] So on that day Moses swore to me, ’The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.’

[10] "Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!

[11] I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.

[12] Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said."

[13] Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.

[14] So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.

[15] (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba after Arba, who was the greatest man among the Anakites.) Then the land had rest from war.

WORD FOR TODAY:
“Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.” Joshua 14:14 NKJV

‎‎‎INSPIRING COMMENTARY:

Caleb was among the twelve spies that Moses the servant of the Lord sent to spy the land of Canaan initially (Numbers 13: 1–8). While ten of them brought back bad reports, Joshua and Caleb were the only ones that gave a good and positive report to Moses. From today’s text, Caleb reminded Joshua of that event and Moses’ promise and oath to him (Joshua 14: 9). Caleb was not just an obedient servant to Moses; he was also a faithful and wholehearted follower of Yahweh. Forty-five years after this promise was made to him, he was still an adherent follower of God.

God has made promises to many believers today, but because they could not wait for the day of its fulfilment, they had missed their blessings. You must understand that when God makes a promise to you, you only know the content of the promise but not the timing of its fulfilment. While God takes charge of the timing, you have the responsibility of waiting for the fulfilment of the promise. Can you behave like Caleb who waited for four and half decades for the blessings? Waiting is not easy, but when the fulfilment comes, it comes with lasting joy and gladness (Read Psalm 30: 5)

*PRAYER:*
Lord, help me to wait for the time of the fulfilment of all your promises towards my life, family and ministry in Jesus name Amen!

BIBLE READING: JOSHUA 13:8–22
(The Holy Bible, New International Version).

JOSHUA 13:8–22
[8] The other half of Manasseh, the Reubenites and the Gadites had received the inheritance that Moses had given them east of the Jordan, as he, the servant of the LORD, had assigned it to them.
[9] It extended from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and included the whole plateau of Medeba as far as Dibon,
[10] and all the towns of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, out to the border of the Ammonites.
[11] It also included Gilead, the territory of the people of Geshur and Maakah, all of Mount Hermon and all Bashan as far as Salekah —
[12] that is, the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei. (He was the last of the Rephaites.) Moses had defeated them and taken over their land.
[13] But the Israelites did not drive out the people of Geshur and Maakah, so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day.
[14] But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance, since the food offerings presented to the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them.
[15] This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Reuben, according to its clans:
[16] The territory from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and the whole plateau past Medeba
[17] to Heshbon and all its towns on the plateau, including Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon,
[18] Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
Joshua 13:19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth Shahar on the hill in the valley,
[20] Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth —
[21] all the towns on the plateau and the entire realm of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled at Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the Midianite chiefs, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba —princes allied with Sihon —who lived in that country.
[22] In addition to those slain in battle, the Israelites had put to the sword Balaam son of Beor, who practiced divination.

WORD FOR TODAY:
“I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.” Ephesians 1:18 NIV

‎‎‎INSPIRING COMMENTARY:

Spiritual inheritance refers to blessings, promises, and responsibilities passed down from one generation to another within the context of faith in God. It includes salvation, eternal life, spiritual gifts, and the legacy of faith. This concept is rooted in the promises God made to his people. In the New Testament, the emphasis is on the blessings received through our faith in Christ. Below are some passages of the Scripture that describes the believer’s inheritance:

*Ephesians 1:3-14:* The believer's inheritance as a spiritual blessing that includes adoption, redemption, forgiveness, and the sealing of the Holy Spirit.

*Colossians 1:12-14:* The believer's inheritance as a share in the kingdom of light, where believers have been transferred to from the kingdom of darkness.

*1 Peter 1:3-5:* The believer's inheritance as an imperishable, undefiled, and unfading inheritance that is reserved in heaven.

*John 3:16 & 1 John 5:11-13:* This includes eternal life, which is a gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ.

*Matthew 5:1-12 & Revelation 22:12:* This includes heavenly rewards, which are promised to believers who faithfully serve God and persevere in their faith.

*Romans 12:3-8 & 1 Corinthians 12:1-11:* The believer's inheritance here includes spiritual gifts, which are bestowed upon believers by the Holy Spirit for the purpose of building up the body of Christ.

*PRAYER:*
Lord, please help me to discover and utilize these spiritual inheritances that I have in you.

[1] These are the kings of the land whom the Israelites had defeated and whose territory they took over east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge to Mount Hermon, including all the eastern side of the Arabah:
[2] Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon. He ruled from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge —from the middle of the gorge —to the Jabbok River, which is the border of the Ammonites. This included half of Gilead.

[7] Here is a list of the kings of the land that Joshua and the Israelites conquered on the west side of the Jordan, from Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon to Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir. Joshua gave their lands as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel according to their tribal divisions.
[8] The lands included the hill country, the western foothills, the Arabah, the mountain slopes, the wilderness and the Negev. These were the lands of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. These were the kings:

[23] the king of Dor (in Naphoth Dor) one the king of Goyim in Gilgal one
[24] the king of Tirzah one thirty-one kings in all.

*WORD FOR TODAY:*
“For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” Deuteronomy 20:4 NIV

‎‎‎INSPIRING COMMENTARY:

God's faithfulness means that God is reliable, trustworthy, and true to His promises and word. He is unchanging in His nature and will consistently keep His covenant of love with those who love Him. His faithfulness is a foundation of trust and hope for believers, ensuring that God will fulfil His promises and provide for their needs (The Gospel Coalition). While good leadership involves inspiring and guiding others toward a common goal, and also developing and empowering individuals within a team. It's about creating a positive and productive environment where people feel valued, motivated, and capable of achieving their best work *(Southern New Hampshire University).*

God was true to His promises to the Israelites and unchanging in His nature, keeping His covenant of love with the leaders of His people. On the other hand, the leadership of Moses and Joshua inspired and guided the Israelites to a common goal – entering and possessing the land of Canaan. Chapter twelve highlights the victory achieved under the leadership of Moses (Joshua 12: 1 – 6) and that achieved in Joshua’s time (Joshua 12: 7 – 24).

Likewise, to every leader today, whether in the family, organizations, Churches, government, God’s faithfulness is always available for us to lead. As a leader, does God’s faithfulness stop with you, or does it flow to the people you are leading?

PRAYER:
Lord, please help me, let my leadership bring comfort and healing to the people I am leading. Amen.

BIBLE READING: JOSHUA 10: 1 – 15
*(The Holy Bible, New International Version).

JOSHUA 10: 1 – 15
[1] Now Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and had become their allies.

[2] He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters.

[3] So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish and Debir king of Eglon.

[4] "Come up and help me attack Gibeon," he said, "because it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites."

[5] Then the five kings of the Amorites —the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon —joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it.

[6] The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: "Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us."

[7] So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army, including all the best fighting men.

[8] The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you."

[9] After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise.

[10] The LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon. Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon and cut them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah.

[11] As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the LORD hurled large hailstones down on them, and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.

[12] On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel: "Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon."

[13] So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.

[14] There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a human being. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!

[15] Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.

*WORD FOR TODAY:*
“And as they fled before Israel, while they were going down the ascent of Beth-horon, the LORD threw down large stones from heaven on them as far Azekah, and they died. There were more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword.” Joshua 10:11 NIV

‎‎‎*INSPIRING COMMENTARY:*

Divine intervention refers to God influencing human affairs, often in times of need or crisis. In our text today, the Five Kings of the Amorites, gathered together to attack Gibeon, because the Gibeonites have run for safety and made covenant with the Israelites. The Gibeonites then cried out to Joshua for help, and the Lord told Joshua in v.8, “Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand, not a man of them shall stand before you”.

God helped Joshua and his soldiers to fight and defeat the five kings and their Armies. In verse 11; “As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones down on them from the sky, and more of them died from the hailstones than were killed by the swords of the Israelites”. This is God’s intervention indeed.

Similarly, in vv.12 - 14; Joshua asked for divine intervention again, and God granted his request, the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day so the Israelites could defeat their enemies totally. When God decides to help a man, He will help him to his amazement.

*PRAYER:*
Lord, intervene in my life and family matters in Jesus’ name. Amen!
