TOPIC: BALANCING JUSTICE AND MERCY
BIBLE READING: JOSHUA 20:1-6
(The Holy Bible, New International Version).
JOSHUA 20:1-6
[1] Then the LORD said to Joshua:
[2] "Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses,
[3] so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.
[4] When they flee to one of these cities, they are to stand in the entrance of the city gate and state their case before the elders of that city. Then the elders are to admit the fugitive into their city and provide a place to live among them.
[5] If the avenger of blood comes in pursuit, the elders must not surrender the fugitive, because the fugitive killed their neighbor unintentionally and without malice aforethought.
[6] They are to stay in that city until they have stood trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then they may go back to their own home in the town from which they fled."
WORD FOR TODAY:
“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: “Appoint for yourselves cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses, that the slayer who kills a person accidentally or unintentionally may flee there; and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.” Joshua 20:2-3 NKJV
INSPIRING COMMENTARY:
According to Stephen Wellum in his book, thinking biblically and theologically about Justice, God’s justice is not arbitrary, but is grounded in His perfect moral demands. As the ultimate Judge, He condones no sin and judges all sin according to His law. The cross of Christ demonstrates God’s justice, where Christ bore the punishment for humanity, satisfying God’s justice and enabling humanity’s redemption.
God’s mercy is a fundamental aspect of God’s character, rooted in His compassion and kindness towards humanity. It informs Gods plan for forgiveness, restoration and God’s offering of redemption and reconciliation to those who repent and turn to Him. This is usually described as an unmerited favour – a gift not worked for.
God’s justice and mercy is balanced through the cross of Jesus Christ: where Christ bore the punishment for humanity’s sin, satisfying God’s justice and demonstrating His mercy. Through this redemptive plan, God provided a way for humanity to be forgiven and restored while upholding His justice and supplying his mercy in ways that humans cannot fully comprehend.
How do you balance justice and mercy in your life, family, workplace and ministry today?
PRAYER:
Lord please, help me to balance justice and mercy in my life’s endeavours in Jesus name.
