DISOBEDIENCE: A RECIPE FOR DISASTER

The scenario in Jeremiah 43 can be likened to contemporary times. Just as the people in Jeremiah's time refused to listen to God's warning through Jeremiah, many people today ignore or disregard the advice and guidance of ministers of God.

For example, some pastors advised their members not to participate in the recent protests, but many people did not heed this warning, and some suffered harm or even lost their lives and properties as a result.

This phenomenon can be seen in various aspects of life, such as:
1. Disregarding biblical teachings on morality and ethics.
2. Ignoring warnings about the dangers of sin and its consequences.
3. Rejecting guidance on relationships, marriage, and family.
4. Disobeying counsel on financial stewardship and responsible living.
5. Neglecting advice on mental and physical health.

When people refuse to listen to God's voice through His ministers, they risk facing negative consequences, just like the people in Jeremiah's time. It's essential to recognize the value of spiritual guidance and heed the warnings and advice of ministers of God to avoid harm and live a life pleasing to Him.

As the Bible says, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy" (Proverbs 27:6). Ministers of God are like friends who provide faithful warnings and guidance, but it's up to individuals to listen and obey.

Talking to myself
Who is he talking to? It sounds like he is talking to himself!

Psalm 103, starts off with a short phrase that is often repeated in other Psalms: ‘Praise the Lord, my soul.’ The author says it again in verse 2, ‘Praise the Lord, my soul.’ And again, at the end of the psalm.

King David, who wrote these words, also wrote Psalm 57 and there is similar language here: ‘Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn’ (57: 8). David is telling himself to wake up and give glory to God.

He’s talking to himself.

My wife and I were chatting one time about how different people are and how those differences can often boil down to personality type – just one way that God has made each of us unique. However, we are also part of a fallen human race and in the process of being renewed. Not everything that makes me, me is necessarily as God intended. We all have a mixture of positive attributes in our personalities and negative ones that are yet to be transformed.

For example, some of us will naturally have a more positive outlook than others. Others, not so. My personality type is melancholic which, according to some studies describes someone who is analytical (yep, that’s true), task-orientated (tick), self-motivated (yes), a perfectionist (oh dear), but can be quite shy and ‘deep’; and with a tendency to want to hide away occasionally. Actually, for some, discouragement, even depression is part of the story and can hit hard. But, hey, we can be really creative!

Without Christ, I would quite easily see the negative in most situations, but when I read the Bible, I don’t think I am alone. Look at the way David expresses himself in Psalm 13:

“How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?

How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart” (Psalm 13: 1 – 2)

When we read David’s soul-bearing poetry, some of it makes me wonder if he might have been a melancholic too. We can’t be sure of course but, if that is true, then he has got something important to say in this space: talk to yourself! Whatever your personality type, when discouragement sets in, when there’s sorrow in your heart, speak to your soul!

At times when we are tempted to dwell on the negative – and everyone has a bad day - then look in the mirror and address your inner self. Speak to your soul: “Awake! Come on! Today is a new day and we are going to praise God and trust him!”

If we are to endeavour to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace in the same Church, then we must avoid everything that would mar it. Gossip — gossip is a very ready means of separating friends from one another. Let us endeavour to talk of something better than each other's characters. Dionysius went down to the Academy to Plato. Plato asked what he came for. "Why," said Dionysius, "I thought that you, Plato, would be talking against me to your students." Plato made this answer: "Dost thou think, Dionysius, we are so destitute of matter to converse upon that we talk of thee?" Truly we must be very short of subjects when we begin to talk of one another. It is better far that we magnify Christ than detract from the honour of His members. We must lay aside all envy. Multitudes of good people liked the Reformation, but they said they did not like the idea of its being done by a poor miserable monk, like Martin Luther; and so there are many who like to see good things done, and good works carried on, but do not care to see it done by that upstart young brother, or that poor man, or that woman who has no particular rank or state. As a Church let us shake off envyings; let us all rejoice in God's light; and as for pride — if any of you have grown vainglorious of late, shake it off.
(C. H. Spurgeon.)

Since the beginning, Satan has worked to infect God’s world with doubt, confusion, and accusations. His weapon of choice? Twisted half-truths and lies.

You can read about his initial truth-twisting in Genesis chapter 3.
