TEXT: COLOSSIANS 2:6-15
TOPIC: DON'T BE CONFUSED

COLOSSIANS 2:6-15 [NIV]

6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him,

7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,

10 and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.

11 In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ,

12 having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,

14 having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.

15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

DON'T BE CONFUSED

The world today is filled with a lot of confusing teachings and things that confuse people to be confused about things or happenings around them. Some may be for lack of knowledge or ignorance, and some without good information or better still, stubbornness of the hearts.

For Apostle Paul, a lack of understanding of who Christ is, is already enough to bring confusion in the life of a person.

Therefore, to avoid this confusion of the mind, one should accept Christ as Lord because in Him all the fullness of God, authority, forgiveness of sin, newness of life and display of authority over powers and authorities are disarmed at the Cross.

QUESTION:
What is confusing your mind about the knowledge of Jesus Christ?

PRAYER:
Father in heaven, help me to remain focused in Christ, who is everything, power and authority over all and refuse to be confused by any other teaching rather than that of Christ, in Jesus' name. Amen.

As we step into this week, remember: your lamp must keep burning.

Stay connected to God. Refill your oil through prayer, His Word, and obedience. Don't let the pressures of life dim the light God has placed within you.

TEXT: COLOSSIANS 2:1-5
TOPIC: PURSUING GOD'S PLAN*

COLOSSIANS 2:1-5 (NIV)

1:I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally.

2:My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,

3:in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

4:I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.

5:For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.

PURSUING GOD'S PLAN

Today, many people including Christians, are pursuing one goal or the other. Some in their Pursuit are pursuing mundane things, and some have no aim or goal that they desire to pursue.

But this was not the life of Paul. Apostle Paul had a heart to pursue God's plan, to achieve a desired goal in the life of the church at Laodicea.

As Christians, part of our Pursuit in life should to make sure we encourage others, not to discourage people, to help people and unite the church not to be a source of disunity in the church and homes and also to help people to have an understanding of the person of Jesus, who is the possession of wisdom and knowledge.

QUESTION:
What is your pursuit in life? Are you making an effort to encourage, unite or help others to know Jesus Christ?

PRAYER:
Lord, help me and give me grace to pursue things that are of eternal value, like encouraging, uniting and helping people to have the knowledge of Jesus Christ, in Jesus' name. Amen.

TEXT: COLOSSIANS 1:24-29
TOPIC: ONE REASON FOR PAUL'S SUFFERING

COLOSSIANS 1:24-29 (NIV)

24:Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.

25:I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness—

26:the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people.

27:To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

28:He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.

29:To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.

ONE REASON FOR PAUL'S SUFFERING

Paul stated that his suffering was his way of "participating in the sufferings of Christ that continue for His body, the Church" (v24).

One might be tempted to think that Paul may be referring to his physical suffering as part of the sacrifice for the salvation of those who accepted Jesus Christ as Saviour.

Not all. Paul meant that he endured suffering patiently so that the message of the gospel would reach out to many unbelievers.

He noted he endured such suffering because "God has given me the responsibility of serving his church by proclaiming his entire message to you.

This message was kept secret for centuries and generations past, but now it has been revealed to God's people” (vs 25-26).

Together with Paul, let us endure patiently with life's challenges "so we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with the wisdom God has given us" (vs 28).

QUESTION:
Have you ever suffered because of your faith in Jesus Christ, and how did you respond?

PRAYER:
Give grace, dear God, to stand strong and patiently endure when it is my turn to face pain and suffering for the sake of the gospel, in Jesus' name. Amen.

TEXT: COLOSSIANS 1:15-23
TOPIC: THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST

COLOSSIANS 1:15-23 (NIV)

15:The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

16:For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

17:He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

18:And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

19:For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,

20:and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

21:Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.

22:But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—

23:if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST

When Paul says, "Christ is the visible image of the invisible God", he is not saying that God has features like a human being. However, a look at the life Jesus lived as the Son of Man, the Messiah, reveals the attributes of God.

Paul clearly showed us the supremacy of Jesus Christ when he noted everything was created through Him and for Him, whether here on earth, in heaven or even spiritual forces and powers. Jesus has no beginning and no end and is the head of the church.

The crown of it all is that God lives in all His fullness in Christ, and through Him, everything is reconciled back to God.

Without Jesus Christ, we will all remain enemies of God and be destined for destruction.

He demonstrated His supremacy when He offered Himself on the cross and shed His blood for our redemption and forgiveness of our sins. Today, we can live holy and blameless lives because of Jesus.

QUESTION:
How will you explain the supremacy of Jesus to a three-year-old child?

PRAYER:
Kindly sing hymn SS&S 11 and use it to pray.

FRIDAY, 29 MAY
TEXT: ROMANS 13:1-7
TOPIC: OBEY CIVIL AUTHORITIES

ROMANS 13:1-7 (NIV)

1:Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

2:Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

3:For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.

4:For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

5:Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.

6:This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.

7:Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

OBEY CIVIL AUTHORITIES

Reading these verses, one might be tempted to wonder why Paul should demand obedience to civil authorities, and whether this includes sit-tights leaders, 21st century political leaders in Africa corrupt leaders.

Paul taught that all leaders "that exist have been instituted by God," and to resist them is to "resist what God has appointed, and those who resist will incure judgment" [vs.1-2].

Leaders are supposed to be servants of God who are assigned to leadership for justice and equity for all, irrespective of class, colour, etc. They are supposed to protect the weak and vulnerable from the ungodly and wicked.

The challenge before us is how to know the leader appointed by God. Every nation is governed by rules called a constitution and a legal system. Unless such rules are ungodly, the Christian citizen is expected to demonstrate to be the best citizen of such a nation.

Keep all laws and pay all taxed and dues. Allow the rulers to administer justice and equity in managing the national resources; they are responsible to God, who will judge them.

QUESTION:
What type of citizen are you to your country?

PRAYER:
Take time to pray for the leaders of your state and country. Pray that they will lead with the fear of God, in Jesus' name. Amen.

THURSDAY, 28 MAY
TEXT: COLOSSIANS 1:1-14
TOPIC: LIVE WORTHY OF THE LORD

COLOSSIANS 1:1-14 (NIV)

1:Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

2:To the holy and faithful brothers in Christ at Colosse: Grace and peace to you from God our Father.

3:We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,

4:because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints—

5:the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel

6:that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth.

7:You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf,

8:and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.

9:For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

10:And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,

11:being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully

12:giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

13:For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,

14:in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

LIVE WORTHY OF THE LORD

Paul opened his letter to the colossians with Thanksgiving and prayer. Like the Emphasis, those in colossae also exhibited a life of strong faith in the Lord Jesus, demonstrated in their sacrificial love for all the brethren.

Paul noted that this attitude of love for other believers is founded on their hope that is laid up in heaven for them. These believers have put their faith in Christ to work and the testimony is well known everywhere.

He went on to declare that they are praying for these believers, asking that they might have an excellent understanding of God and his will. This understanding will be translated into a life that will demonstrate that they are true followers of Jesus Christ.

They will need to be strengthened with all the power of God, which will enable them to endure. Every follower of Jesus Christ is called to live by Faith through patience because we are in a spiritual battle.

We have all been delivered from the kingdom of Satan and brought into the kingdom of Jesus Christ, so live the redeemed life.

QUESTION:
Does your life encouraged other Believers to give thanks to God and also pray for you?

PRAYER:
Dear God, I choose to live every day in the power of Your might as a true witness of your grace and mercy.

TEXT: EPHESIANS 6:10-20
TOPIC: READY FOR WAR

EPHESIANS 6:10-20 (NIV)

10:Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

11:Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

12:For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

13:Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

14:Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,

15:and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

16:In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17:Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18:And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

19:Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel,

20:for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

READY FOR WAR

Christian life is not a "bed of roses". Today's text debunks such claims as inaccurate teaching of the Word of God.

Paul opens with strong words that denote a military command when he said to the Ephesians, "Finally, be strong in the Lord and the strength of his might.

Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil" (vs 10-11).

The good thing about this instruction is that all the believer needs to face this battle is all provided for in the Lord, because the battle is not "against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places" (vs 12).

We are confronted by the forces of evil under Satan's control, and the only armour that can be used against him is the "whole armour of God" which includes the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, and helmet of salvation with all kinds of prayers.

You cannot live a life of fear or even defeat in the hands of the devil because you have everything you need for a victorious Christian life.

QUESTION:
Are you living a life of victory over Satan and his demons, or living under his control?

PRAYER:
Lord, help me to live every day well equipped with Your whole armour, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
