HOLY SATURDAY

On Holy Saturday, the Church waits at the Lord’s tomb in prayer and fasting, meditating on his Passion and Death and on his Descent into Hell, and awaiting his Resurrection. The Church abstains from the sacrifice of the Mass, with the sacred table left bare, until after the solemn Vigil, that is, the anticipation by night of the Resurrection, when the time comes for paschal joy, the abundance of which overflows.

Today’s Reflection
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten Season. Lent is a season in the Church’s liturgical calendar when the members are expected to be sorry for their sins, do penance, sacrifice, give alms, and intensify and enrich their prayer life. It is called Ash Wednesday because of the ash each person is expected to be marked with on the forehead, to remind us of our sinfulness and mortality. Today’s Gospel is appropriate for Lenten observances. It touches on three important religious practices, namely: almsgiving, fasting and prayer. All these practices are very important for a deeper spiritual communion. However, Christians should not be showy in observing any of these. Any form of attention-seeking behavior contradicts true piety.

True piety is secretly practicing these acts, acknowledging God who sees in secret. Desist from unnecessary attention. Be humble.

Today's Reflection

St Paul noted that all things work together unto good for those who love God (Rom 8:28). If you really love God, then you certainly have nothing to be afraid of because it means that you have all that matters. To love is to keep all the commandments because God is love (1 Jn 4:16) and all commandments come from God, and so, since God is love, the commandments have love as their foundation (cf Mt 22:37-40). So if you want to know God, love; if you want to love God, begin by loving that person beside you. Let love then guide you in all things and you will experience the transforming presence of God in your life.

Today's Reflection

In our celebration of the immaculate conception of Mary, the focus is on God who preserved Mary from Original Sin. The greeting of the angel to Mary, “Hail, full of grace” (LK 1:28) is an indication of that. Adam and Eve were created in precisely that state of grace (cf Gen 1:31), but by the abuse of their free will, they fell out of that grace. Mary on the other hand chose to cooperate with God (Lk 1:38). We too can choose either to cooperate with God and strive after holiness in life or remain and perish in sin. That decision is for everyone to make individually. May the spirit of God inspire and sustain in you, the decision to follow him faithfully in holiness of life. Amen

Here are four habits that I believe will help us wait on God’s timing. Reading the Promises of God Next to Jesus Christ, Job may have suffered as much as anyone ever did, yet he held onto this promise: “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. ...

Today's Reflection

The prophet Isaiah tries to assure us today that God has not given up on us, and that if we come back to God and remain with him, he will wipe our tears and make us prosper in the Land. God’s compassion for us is so enormous that it moves him to carry our troubles all by himself (cfm t 9:35 – 10:1). Remember that in order to benefit from that, we must wait for him. Waiting for him means repenting of our sins and trusting in God. As you wait for the Lord, may he dry your tears and take care of your troubles so that your songs would be that of joy at the victory won. Amen.

Stir up your power, we pray, O Lord, and come, that with you to protect us, we may find rescue from the pressing dangers of our sins, and with you to set us free, we may be found worthy of salvation. Who live and reign with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
