Israel has fought several major wars with neighboring Arab countries since 1948. Here’s the breakdown of the main ones and how they ended:
1. 1948 Arab-Israeli War / Israel’s War of Independence
Countries involved Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia sent forces.
Outcome Israel won. It secured independence and gained more territory than the UN partition plan had allocated.
Arab states failed to prevent Israel’s establishment.
2. 1956 Suez Crisis / Sinai War
Countries involved Israel, with UK and France, fought Egypt.
Outcome Israel militarily defeated Egypt and occupied Sinai and Gaza, but withdrew in 1957 under U.S. and UN pressure. So Israel won tactically, but didn’t keep the territory.
3. 1967 Six-Day War
Countries involved : Israel vs Egypt, Jordan, Syria. Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Algeria also sent troops/arms.
Outcome : Decisive Israeli victory. Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza, Sinai, and Golan Heights.
4. 1967–1970 War of Attrition
Countries involved : Israel vs Egypt, with support from USSR, Jordan, Syria, PLO.
Outcome : Ended in ceasefire with no territorial changes. No clear winner, but Israel held Sinai.
5. 1973 Yom Kippur War / October War
Countries involved : Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack, later joined by other Arab states.
Outcome : Israel won militarily. Arab forces were defeated and there were no significant territorial changes. But Egypt achieved some political gains later, leading to the 1979 peace treaty and return of Sinai.
6. 1982 Lebanon War
Countries involved : Israel invaded Lebanon to expel PLO forces.
Outcome : Israel achieved initial goals but got bogged down. It withdrew from most of Lebanon by 2000.
