TEXT:1 PETER 1:1-12
TOPIC: NEW BIRTH INTO A LIVING HOPE

The saying, "There is no place like home" comes in handy in today's passage.

Christians longed for their home land because they were scattered and in trouble which brought suffering and trials of all kinds (vs. 1-6). During this period, Emperor Nero (AD 54-68) accused Christians of doing wrong in Rome.

They were persecuted, some were burnt alive while others were thrown into arenas to be devoured by wild animals. However, Peter, in vs. 2h, prayed for grace and peace in abundance for the Christians.

The situation is almost the same with what Christians are facing in Nigeria today as they are being killed, persecuted, denied basic rights, etc. But in all of these, we should know that we are strangers in this world (vs.1).

Both the persecutors and the persecuted will leave this world and that is why the new birth into a living hope is a very vital privilege.

So, even if you lose everything on earth due to sickness, persecution, death, etc, you would not lose heaven (cf. John 14:1-3) and God has shielded us by His power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed (vs. 5).

QUESTION:
Have you experienced this new birth into a living hope?

PRAYER:
Dear Father; thank You for the new birth in to a living hope I have in You, it is a privilege to know You and be saved by You. Help me to live my life with the knowledge of this hope in You, in Jesus name. Amen.

Ezekiel 25:15-17
[15]The Sovereign Lord said, “The Philistines have taken cruel revenge on their age-long enemies and destroyed them in their hate.
[16]And so I am announcing that I will attack the Philistines and wipe them out. I will destroy everyone left living there on the Philistine Plain.
[17]I will punish them severely and take full revenge on them. They will feel my anger. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

TEXT: PROVERBS 20:1-14
TOPIC: B E W I S E

Proverbs 14:12 says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death" (NIV). To be wise is to show good judgement.

Moreover, you gain wisdom from experience. This is where intellectual power is displayed through moral control.

That is why a wise man will refuse to be intoxicated with and by wine because it will only make him a fool and cannot be satisfied (vs.1).

Some people think that drinking beer will make them forget their problems. Do not be deceived by this, friends.

Verses 2 and 3 show that a wise man does not get into a quarrel, rather, he is always cool - headed.

A wise man is hardworking, very insightful and faithful (vs.5-6).

Also, blessings follow the righteous man and his children. Indeed, a wise man does not get involved in crooked dealings.

Therefore, run away from a sluggish hand to avoid its consequences (vs.13-14).

QUESTION:
Are you wise or foolish in attitude and behavior?

PRAYER:
Oh God, grant me the grace to pursue and gain wisdom, in Jesus name. Amen.

TEXT: PROVERBS 18:1-24
TOPIC:THE STRONG TOWER

Today, mindless killing kidnapping, banditry, etc, are on the increase. In today's text the Lord offers guaranteed security in His name which is a strong tower (vs. 10).

The name of the Lord Jesus is greater and higher than all names. It is not an ordinary name; it is full of power and grace. It is potent enough to save.

David characterized God's care and protection with fire and military symbols (Psalm 18:2ff). God is likened to a rock that cannot be moved by anyone who wants to harm us.

God is also described as a fortress or a place of safety where the enemy cannot pe*****te.

God is a shield that comes between us and any harm, He has the power to save and is a place of safety higher and above all of our enemies put together.

The name of the Lord offers spiritual security as well. At the name of Jesus, sicknesses bow and demons tremble. Hallelujah!!

QUESTION:
Do you always run to the Lord in prayer whenever you feel threatened physically and spiritually?

PRAYER:
Oh God, please help me to trust You as my formidable security and tower at all times, even when our country's security system fails us, in Jesus name. Amen.

TUESDAY, 10 OCTOBER 2023
TEXT: PROVERBS 15:25-16:11
TOPIC: THE GOD OF THE DEFENCELESS

Because aliens, the fatherless and widows are weak and powerless, their rights are often trampled upon.

Today's passage is a reminder that God Himself fights for strangers, the fatherless and the vulnerable daily (vs.25).

Psalm 68:5 states: "A father to the fatherless, a defender of the widows is God in Holy dwelling" Also, Psalm 146:9 says: "The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widows but He frustrates the ways of the wicked."

Therefore, God wants Christians to treat all people equally and fairly, whether they are strangers, widows, fatherless, rich or poor.

Chapter 16:11 likewise says that what we do to other people is the same measure we shall receive from God who sets the standards for fairness.

QUESTION:
In what ways are you defending the causes of the defenseless, fatherless and vulnerable?

PRAYER:
Oh God, help me to be fair and honest in treating all people, in Jesus name. Amen.

TEXT: PROVERBS 14:26-15:9
TOPIC: FEAR GOD

One of the things man dreads most is death. Fearing God is distinctively different from fearing man and inanimate things.

The fear of God has to do with a feeling of reverence, awe and respect, not the unpleasant emotions of terror or dread described in Proverbs 29:25a.

The fear of the Lord is all enriching and comes with a lot of benefits or blessings. For instance, the man who fears the Lord has a secured fortress which will also be a refuge for his children (vs.26).

The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life that can turn a man from the snares of death (vs.27).

The fear of the Lord keeps one pure (cf. Psalm 19:9); "He that fears the Lord... shall be taught in the way" (cf. Psalm 25:12); and the goodness of God is extended to them who fear the Lord (cf. Psalm 31:19).

QUESTION:
Do you really fear God out of reverence?

PRAYER:
Oh God, help me to reverence You, to stand in awe of You and respect You all the days of my life, in Jesus name. Amen.

TEXT: PROVERBS 13:1-11
TOPIC: A WISE SON (1)

A son is considered wise when he accepts the good advice or teachings of his parents because no good parents will ever mislead their child.

Therefore, in Proverbs 13:1-11, the all-knowing God gives us, His children, some pieces of advice and wise is that son who heeds these instructions.

In vs.3, God expects us to exercise self-control over our speech and master our tongue for words have the ability to cut and destroy (James 3:6).

If you want to have self-control, begin with your tongue. If you can control this small but powerful part of your body, then you can control the rest of your body.

God also instructs us to live blameless lives as it safeguards and brings a greater sense of order to our lives.

QUESTION:
Are you a wise or foolish son?

PRAYER:
Oh God, help me to be/a wise son who listens to both his earthly and heavenly parents instructions, in Jesus name. Amen.

TEXT: ACTS 17: 1-15
TOPIC: MY CUSTOM

Custom is what someone is always in the habit of doing which has become part of that person's daily life. Some customs are bad while some are good.

Today's text illustrates the custom of a child of God. Paul had the custom of preaching in the synagogue which was a key and central meeting place for the Jews. He wanted them to understand that Jesus is the Messiah (vs. 1-3), with evidence from the Scriptures.

Indeed, this part of Paul's custom paid off as the Gentiles and Jews were drawn to the Lord (vs 4). Paul encountered jealous men and stiff opposition but these did not stop him from practicing his custom of preaching and teaching from the Scriptures (vs 5-10).

In fact, on arriving Thessalonica, he went straight to the synagogue (vs. 10). The custom of searching the Scriptures by the Berean Christians was a noble character. They did not just receive the message with eagerness but searched the Scripture which made many people believe and accept Christ (vs. 12).

QUESTION:
What is your custom and how has it improved the church and helped people know and accept Christ?

PRAYER:
Thank You, Oh Lord, for making me who I am. Help me to cultivate the great custom of preaching, teaching and searching the Scriptures daily, in Jesus name. Amen.

MONDAY, 2 OCTOBER 2023
TEXT: ACTS 16: 25-34
TOPIC: NOTHING CAN STOP YOU

Prison is a place of confinement. It could be for a short or long term. Some people are confined for serious crimes while others are imprisoned without committing any serious crimes.

Paul and Silas were confined for a crime they didn't commit. However, that did not stop them from displaying the glory of God through witnessing (vs. 29-30).

The prison guards recognized the higher authority Paul and Silas possessed. The head guard came asking what he could do to be saved (vs. 31). Even though they were ill-treated, they did not allow that deny the jailer and his household salvation, as we sometimes see today.

Salvation is free in the Lord Jesus Christ and God will not deny it to anyone who earnestly seeks Him. So, nothing should stop us from witnessing to people because salvation in Christ Jesus brings joy and happiness to the world (vs 32-34).

QUESTION:
Are you confined by any problem in your life that you have lost your peace which makes it difficult for you to speak the truth?

PRAYER:
Oh Lord, help me not to allow anything or problem confine me or make me not to see Your salvation, in Christ's name. Amen.
