Zephaniah 1
Life Application
There goes our God, ever true to His policy that He will never do anything without first of all revealing it to His prophets (see Amos 3 : 7). This local day of the Lord did come as predicted. Was there any reason why any in Judah should be taken by surprise? No, not with this warning given through Zephaniah and other prophets. Has God also given us a warning about the coming universal day of the Lord? Yes, that is what the Book of Revelation is about. Let us study it and be prepared for the great day of the Lord. For a better understanding, study it with The Great Controversy by Ellen G. White.

Zephaniah 1

PREPARE FOR THE DAY OF THE LORD
Welcome to the book of Zephaniah, a prophet whose ministry took place during the reign of King Josiah (641-609 B. C.), “the last of Judah’s kings to bring spiritual revival to the kingdom prior to the destruction of the city of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 B. C... Thus it seems best to see Zephaniah as part of the movement for spiritual renewal and to view his prophetic message as supporting Josiah in bringing about a work of reformation among the people.”— Andrews Study Bible, p. 1202

The theme of the book is “The Day of the Lord.” This is “the day of God’s wrath upon individual nation and upon the world. . . Prophecies of a local ‘day of the Lord’ are often descriptive also of the universal ‘day of the Lord’ at the end of the world. Similarly, Jesus blended predictions of the fall of Jerusalem with those of His second coming.”— 4 SDABC : 110.
This is what will happen when the day of the Lord comes:

“ ‘I will utterly consume everything/ From the face of the land,’/Says the Lord” (v. 2).

“The prophet here refers specifically to the land of Judah, to whose rulers and people his message of judgment was originally addressed.”— Ibid., p. 1063. The day of the Lord is the coming Babylonian invasion that will bring about desolation. The reason for it is idolatry (see vs. 4-6).

Zephaniah’s message is urgent because:

“The great day of the Lord is near;
It is near and hastens quickly.
The noise of the day of the Lord is bitter;
There the mighty men shall cry out” (v. 14).

How terrible will it be?

“That day is a day of wrath,
A day of trouble and distress,
A day of devastation and desolation,
A day of darkness and gloominess,
A day of clouds and thick darkness” (v. 15).

Jonah 3

HOW NINEVITES REBUKED ISRAELITES
Jonah’s message to the Ninevites was, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” (v. 4). The word “overthrown” is the same “word used in Gen. 19 : 21, 25, 29 to describe the destruction of S***m.”— 4 SDABC 1005. In response to the message, the whole city repented, and “Repentance of the Assyrians stopped the planned judgment.”— Andrews Study Bible, p. 1180.

Life Application
“What a rebuke to Israel’s proud rulers and people who persistently refuse to humble their hearts under the impact of an even more extensive and continuous prophetic ministry (see 2 Kings 17 : 7-18).”—4 SDABC 1005

Are you aware that some non-Adventists appreciate the prophetic ministry of Ellen White more than even some Adventist pastors? It is strange, but that is a fact. Jehoshaphat was right when he said:

“Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem:/ Believe in the LORD your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.” ‭‭II Chronicles‬ ‭20:20‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Jonah 2

GOD LOVES HUMANS UNCONDITIONALLY
Jonah reports:

“Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight;
Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple” (v. 4).
“When my soul fainted within me,
I remembered the Lord;
And my prayer went up to You,
Into Your holy temple” (v. 7).

God heard his prayer and rescued him.

Life Application
God’s love is unconditional and everlasting. Suffering the consequences of our sins is inevitable, but God suffers with us as we experience the consequences, and He will rescue us if we call on Him. When the prodigal son was in the wilderness of sin, the father, representing God, still loved him. How happy the father was when he came back home. That is our God! Truly, He is love!

Do we find ourselves in self-inflicted calamities, God still loves us, and He will rescue us if we repent and call on Him.

Jonah 1

ASLEEP IN THE STORM
Nineveh was the capital city of Assyria. The wickedness of the people of the city “has come up” before God. “This expression, or one similar to it, is used of the sins of the antediluvian world (Gen. 6 : 5, 11) and of the inhabitants of S***m and Gomorrah (Gen. 18:20, 21). In both instances probation was about to close. Perhaps this was now the case with Nineveh.”— 4 SDABC 998. Against this background, God sent His prophet to go give them warning so that they could avoid being destroyed but he escaped to Tarshish.

Another sad episode was that while the ship was being storm tossed and the life of everyone on board was in danger, and everyone was crying to his god, “Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.” (v. 5).
Let us ask a question: Who was the problem in that ship? Jonah, the prophet of God!

Life Application
If the gospel work had been finished as God intended in 1888, or 1901 we will not have had the first and Second World War, Hi**er would not have killed six million Jews, we will not have had Covid-19, we will not be experiencing mass kidnappings of human beings as are taking place in Nigeria today. We should be expecting more evils as the children of God continue to be fast asleep in the midst of the storm.

So the question is: Who are the problems of our world today? Ellen White helps us to answer this question:
“For forty years did unbelief, murmuring, and rebellion (and arrogance) shut out ancient Israel from the land of Canaan. The same sins have delayed the entrance of modern Israel into the heavenly Canaan. In neither case were the promises of God at fault. It is the unbelief, the worldliness, unconsecration, and strife among the Lord's professed people that have kept us in this world of sin and sorrow so many years.”—Manuscript 4, 1883. . Ev 696.2
