Jonah 1
ASLEEP IN THE STORM
Nineveh was the capital city of Assyria. The wickedness of the people of the city “has come up” before God. “This expression, or one similar to it, is used of the sins of the antediluvian world (Gen. 6 : 5, 11) and of the inhabitants of S***m and Gomorrah (Gen. 18:20, 21). In both instances probation was about to close. Perhaps this was now the case with Nineveh.”— 4 SDABC 998. Against this background, God sent His prophet to go give them warning so that they could avoid being destroyed but he escaped to Tarshish.
Another sad episode was that while the ship was being storm tossed and the life of everyone on board was in danger, and everyone was crying to his god, “Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.” (v. 5).
Let us ask a question: Who was the problem in that ship? Jonah, the prophet of God!
Life Application
If the gospel work had been finished as God intended in 1888, or 1901 we will not have had the first and Second World War, Hi**er would not have killed six million Jews, we will not have had Covid-19, we will not be experiencing mass kidnappings of human beings as are taking place in Nigeria today. We should be expecting more evils as the children of God continue to be fast asleep in the midst of the storm.
So the question is: Who are the problems of our world today? Ellen White helps us to answer this question:
“For forty years did unbelief, murmuring, and rebellion (and arrogance) shut out ancient Israel from the land of Canaan. The same sins have delayed the entrance of modern Israel into the heavenly Canaan. In neither case were the promises of God at fault. It is the unbelief, the worldliness, unconsecration, and strife among the Lord's professed people that have kept us in this world of sin and sorrow so many years.”—Manuscript 4, 1883. . Ev 696.2
