Today’s Mass uses Psalm 15 as its Responsorial Response ‘Show us, Lord, the path of life’. Psalm 15 was written by King David after he had overseen the work of moving the Ark of the Covenant to the holy hill of Zion. He had been confronted with the weight and glory of the holiness and magnificence of the very presence of God.

The verse ‘O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup; it is you yourself who are my prize.’ Portion: Refers to a share in something divided implying an inheritance, gift or allotment. Cup: Functions as a metaphor for an individual's fate, experiences, or blessings (e.g., an "overflowing cup").
"The Lord is my portion" means God is the source of happiness and blessing, not just physical possessions. As stated ‘it is you yourself who are my prize’.

Both St. Joseph and Mary belonged to the Tribe of Judah and were descendants of King David. Both genealogies ensure Jesus fulfills Messianic prophecies as a true descendant of David, both legally (through Joseph) and biologically (through Mary).
