ISLAMIC RULING ON A WIFE REFUSING HER HUSBAND MARITAL RELATIONS
In Islam, marriage is built upon love, mercy, and mutual consideration, but it also carries clear rights and responsibilities. Among the husband’s rights is that his wife should not refuse him marital relations without a valid reason, as this can lead to harm, discord, or even sin. Islam emphasizes kindness on both sides, yet it also warns against unjustly withholding marital intimacy.
Hadith Evidence
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When a man calls his wife to his bed and she refuses, and he spends the night angry with her, the angels curse her until morning.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
This hadith highlights the seriousness of refusing without a valid excuse. However, scholars clarify that this applies when the refusal is out of stubbornness or neglect of the husband’s right, not when there is harm, illness, or other legitimate reasons. Islam does not permit abuse, coercion, or physical harm in marital relations.
Qur’anic Guidance
The Qur’an calls both spouses to mutual kindness and cooperation:
“And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them – perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.”
(Qur’an 4:19)
“They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them.”
(Qur’an 2:187)
These verses show that intimacy is meant to be based on comfort, affection, and protection—not hardship or harm. A wife has the right to safeguard her health and dignity, just as a husband has the right to intimacy within the bounds of respect and compassion.
Islam teaches that marriage should never become a battlefield of rights and punishments. If issues arise, both partners are encouraged to discuss them with wisdom, patience, and understanding.
