He said he couldn’t live without me… But he was killing me slowly.
Not with a knife.
Not with poison.
But with manipulation.
At first, it didn’t look like abuse. It looked like love.
He called me every hour. Sent long messages. Told me I was his peace.
He said I was the only one who ever understood him.
The only one who saw his heart.
And me? I believed him.
He wasn’t the loud type. He didn’t shout. He didn’t hit.
He just guilt-tripped me into silence.
Used tears to buy my loyalty.
Used trauma to chain my heart.
If I didn’t pick his calls in 5 minutes, he would say,
“So you’re ignoring me like the rest of the world?”
If I said I was going out with friends,
He would sigh and reply,
“Must you leave me alone when you know I have anxiety?”
I stopped going out.
When I brought up something he did that hurt me,
He would cry—genuinely cry—and say,
“I’m broken, babe. Please don’t leave me like everyone else.”
So I stayed.
When he got angry, he would sulk for 3 days.
No words. No reply. Just cold shoulder.
Until I came to beg—even when I didn’t do anything.
He said, “Don’t worry, no man will love you the way I do.”
He was right.
Because no one else would love me to death.
He drained my joy.
Doubted my every move.
Disrespected my boundaries.
Yet made me feel like leaving him would destroy him.
One day, I gathered courage and told my mentor everything.
She looked at me and said something I will never forget:
“Manipulators don’t need cages. They build them with guilt, and make you lock yourself in.”
I broke down.
That night, I wrote him a long message—not to fight. Not to argue. Just to say I was done.
Done being the emotional oxygen to someone who wanted to suffocate me.
He replied, “Wow. So you’ve become like the others.”
I blocked him.
And for the first time in a long time…
I breathed.
Today, I’m healing.
Learning.
Growing.
Loving God. Loving myself.
And protecting my peace like it’s gold—because it is.
Moral of the story?
Emotional abuse doesn’t always scream. Sometimes it whispers, “If you leave me, I’ll break.”
But manipulation is not love.
Love sets you free—it doesn’t bind you in fear.
And no matter how good someone is at pretending to be broken, it’s not your job to fix what God didn’t assign to you.
You are not a rehab centre.
You are not a rescue mission.
You are a daughter of the King.
So don’t apologize for walking away from anything that drowns your joy and dim your light.
And finally…
Never play games with the devil to prove a point. You might win the argument, but lose something precious in the process.
