Lesson 6
Topic:
God's Law: A Covenant With His People
Memory Scripture:
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (Exodus 19:5-6).
God's law is a sacred covenant, guiding His people in love, justice, and righteousness, fostering faith, harmony, and devotion.
BRIEF COMMENT
The memory emory scripture from Exodus 19:5-6 captures the essence of God's deep, covenantal ntal relationship with His people. It emphasises that this relationship comes with a promise, but also with a condition-obedience. The reward for obedience is incredible-being chosen as God's "special treasure" part of a "kingdom of priests", and a "holy nation". This speaks directly to the heart of the Bible, which is God's way of reaching out to humanity, giving us His laws, commandments and promises for those willing to follow. It is not just a list of rules but a framework for a committed relationship with God. This scripture reminds us that God's law is not meant to be a burden; it is a covenant that defines how He interacts with us-His people-and calls us into a deeper, more meaningful connection with Him. May we find His grace to meet this divine expectation.

In our last lesson, The Bible's Purpose: God's Plan for Humanity, we looked at how the Bible reveals God's incredible plan for us. This week, we are going to explore God's Law: A Covenant With His People.
Understanding God's law as a covenant is really important to our Christian faith. His Law shows us His nature, what He expects from His people and the way to experience His blessings. But this covenant isn't just a set of rules; it is a loving agreement that calls for obedience.
In the Old Testament, the Israelites were chosen to be God's special people, set apart from the rest of the world through their commitment to His Law. This relationship wasn't just for them-it was meant to show the world who God is. The same principles still apply to us today, as God's Word continues to guide us under the New Covenant through Jesus Christ.
LESSON OUTLINE
I. THE COVENANT NATURE OF GOD'S LAW
II. THE BLESSINGS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LAW
LESSON EXPOSITION
I. THE COVENANT NATURE OF GOD'S LAW (Exo. 19:5; Lev. 11:44)
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant... (Exo. 19:5).
a) Exo. 19:5: God's Law isn't just a set of rules; it is a divine guide reflecting God's will for His people, calling them to listen to His voice and keep His covenant.
b) The Law is a gift, showing God's people how to live in a way that honours Him. It isn't just rules about survival but understanding and following God's desires (cf. Matt. 5:17).
c) v. 6: God calls His people to be a "kingdom of priests" and a "holy nation", if they obey Him. The Law is a relationship. It isn't just about rules, but about building a deeper relationship with God.
d) God's Law is an invitation to live closely with Him, reflecting His holiness and purpose. We are also called to be a holy, chosen people (1 Pet. 2:9). Does that describe you?
e) Lev. 11:44: God's Law reflects His holiness and calls us to live pure lives (cf. 1 Pet. 1:15,16). It is about inner change, not just rules, and through Jesus alone, we can live by His standards.
f God's Law is more than rules; it is a covenant that shapes our relationship with Him and calls us to live in His holiness. It is not just for the Israelites, but for all believers today.
II. THE BLESSINGS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LAW (Deut. 28:1-2,15; Jer. 31:33-34)
If you will diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God... all these blessings shall come upon you (Deut. 28:1-2).
a) Deut. 28:1-2: God promises blessings-peace, prosperity and protection-to those who obey Him. Obedience brings His favour. Seek God's kingdom first and everything else follows (Matt. 6:33).
b) v. 15: Obedience comes with the responsibility to live by God's commands. Disobedience brings penalties, including separation from His blessings. Our choices matter (cf. Gal. 6:7).
c) Jer. 31:33: God is always faithful to His people. His covenant is built on His faithfulness, not our perfection (2 Tim. 2:13). Even when we fall short, He remains committed to us. The New Covenant in Jesus offers restoration and hope for reconciliation.
d) vv. 33,34: God's promise to be our God is rooted in His unchanging faithfulness. While nothing separates us from His love (Rom. 8:38-39), our relationship with Him requires continued faith and obedience. His faithfulness is not an excuse for disobedience.
e) By obeying God's Law, we experience both blessings and responsibility. And even when we fall short, God's unwavering faithfulness offers us the chance to return and be restored.
LESSONS DERIVED
1. Obedience unlocks God's blessings. Following His commands invites His favour and rewards.
2. God's covenant is a relationship, not a contract. It is a call to trust, obey and commit to His love.
QUESTIONS
1. What does it mean to be a "kingdom of priests" and "a holy nation" (Exodus 19:6) and how does this relate to the nature of God's Law and covenant?
2. How can we apply the principles of obedience and blessing in our daily lives, especially in our relationship with God?
SUGGESTED ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS
ANSWERS TO QUESTION 1

* A "holy nation" means that God's people are to live in a way that reflects His purity and righteousness, distinct from the world.

* God's covenant with Israel called them to obedience, with the promise that they would be a light to the nations, showing God's t 's character through their actions.
ANSWER TO QUESTION 2

LIFE APPLICATION
Consider a family that decides to raise their children according to God's Word, despite the pressures and distractions of today's world. The parents choose to follow God's guidance, teaching their children His commandments and trusting Him with their future. As they live out this commitment, they begin to see blessings unfold-peace in their home, harmony in their relationships and spiritual growth in their children. This shows the power of living in line with God's covenant. When we obey Him, His promises of peace and blessings are faithfully fulfilled in our lives.
CONCLUSION
God's Law is not only a set of instructions; it is a covenant with His people, a divine agreement rooted in His love and holiness. As we obey God's voice and keep His commandments, we are privileged to live as His chosen people, blessed with His promises and presence. Through obedience to God's law, we fulfil our purpose as a holy nation, set apart for His glory. This is the import of the lesson we just concluded. Don't forget!
