How to Pastor Unstable Members in your Church
🌱1️⃣ DIAGNOSE BEFORE YOU DISCIPLINE 🩺
Not every absence is rebellion — some are wounds.
📖 “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep…” — John 10:14 (KJV)
📖 “Wherefore comfort yourselves together…” — 1 Thess. 5:11
🔹 Some are inconsistent because of pain, confusion, burnout, or silent battles.
🔹 Pastors who only scold without understanding will lose people.
👉 Shepherd first, judge later.
🌱2️⃣ SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS — NO EMOTIONAL PASTORING 📏
Love must have boundaries.
📖 “Let all things be done decently and in order.” — 1 Cor. 14:40
📖 “Choose you this day whom ye will serve…” — Josh. 24:15
🔹 Define what commitment means clearly.
🔹 Stop tolerating casual Christianity in serious Kingdom work.
🔹 Confusion thrives where expectations are not stated.
👉 Clarity reduces excuses.
🌱3️⃣ CONFRONT IN LOVE, NOT FROM THE PULPIT ❤️🗣️
Public rebuke creates secret rebels.
📖 “Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone…” — Matt. 18:15
📖 “Faithful are the wounds of a friend…” — Prov. 27:6
🔹 Call them aside, not call them out.
🔹 Speak truth, but season it with grace.
🔹 People heal faster when correction feels safe.
👉 Private correction produces public stability.
🌱4️⃣ DON’T REWARD INCONSISTENCY WITH LEADERSHIP 🚫🎤
An unstable member should not be a visible example.
📖 “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” — James 1:8
📖 “Lay hands suddenly on no man…” — 1 Tim. 5:22
🔹 Stop promoting attendance by emotion.
🔹 Visibility without discipline breeds hypocrisy.
🔹 Leadership is a reward for faithfulness, not familiarity.
👉 Stability qualifies, not noise.
🌱5️⃣ PLUG THEM INTO SMALL GROUPS & ACCOUNTABILITY 🔗
Isolation feeds inconsistency.
📖 “And they, continuing daily with one accord…” — Acts 2:46
📖 “Two are better than one…” — Eccl. 4:9
🔹 Large services hide unstable habits.
🔹 Small groups expose patterns gently.
🔹 Accountability kills excuses.
👉 Sheep stay better in flocks.
🌱6️⃣ TEACH CONSEQUENCES, NOT JUST COMFORT ⚖️
Grace without truth produces spiritual babies.
📖 “Be not deceived; God is not mocked…” — Gal. 6:7
📖 “Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away…” — John 15:2
🔹 Irregularity has spiritual costs.
🔹 Teach that spiritual growth is intentional, not accidental.
🔹 Comfort may soothe — truth transforms.
👉 Growth demands responsibility.
🌱7️⃣ INTERCEDE FERVENTLY — SOME BATTLES ARE SPIRITUAL 🔥🙏
Not every instability is natural.
📖 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood…” — Eph. 6:12
📖 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you…” — Luke 22:31–32
🔹 Some members are under attack.
🔹 Pray them into consistency.
🔹 Intercession stabilizes where counselling fails.
👉 What advice cannot fix, prayer can break.
🌱8️⃣ ACCEPT THIS TRUTH: YOU CAN’T SAVE EVERYONE 🕊️
Even Jesus lost disciples.
📖 “From that time many of his disciples went back…” — John 6:66
📖 “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock…” — Acts 20:28
🔹 Love all, chase none.
🔹 Some prefer excuses to encounters.
🔹 Focus on the hungry, not the distracted.
👉 Pastors are faithful, not responsible for choices.
