HAVE YOU HEARD OF FORCEPS DELIVERY DURING BIRTH?
What is a Forceps Delivery?
Sometimes during childbirth, things don’t go as smoothly as expected. That’s where a forceps delivery can help.
So what is it?
A forceps delivery is when a doctor gently uses a special tool (that looks like big spoons or tongs) to help guide the baby out during the last part of labor. It’s called “assisted delivery” because it gives a little extra help when the baby or mom needs it.
When is it used?
• If the mom is too tired to push anymore
• If the baby is stuck or not moving down fast enough
• If the baby’s heart rate is dropping and needs to come out quickly
What has to be in place before doing it?
• The mom must be fully dilated
• The baby must be in the right position
• The doctor checks that it’s safe and gets consent
✅ If all is okay, the doctor gently places the forceps around the baby’s head and guides them out carefully and safely.
Is it safe?
Yes, when done by a trained doctor, it can be very safe. But like any delivery, there are some risks:
• Baby might get a small bruise or temporary mark on the face (usually goes away fast!)
• Mom might have some tears or need stitches
The good news? Most moms and babies do just fine after a forceps delivery. It’s just another tool that helps bring your little one safely into the world when a bit of extra help is needed.
