Genesis 11

THE TOWER OF BABEL AND THE MANY LANGUAGES

Gen 11:4
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

Under the rulership of Nimrod, the whole earth was gathered together for the ungodly purpose of building a tower that will reach unto heaven.
This project was a very humongous and gigantic project.

They had progressed significantly in it when it came to a crashing halt.
Many people say that it would not have been possible to build a tower that will get to heaven. Firstly, when heaven is mentioned, it does not mean the very throne of God. Here, we are dealing with the glass dome that covers the earth.
Secondly, God did not think that what they wanted to do was impossible. Gen 11:6 says: “And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.”

Then for God to stop them from carrying out their maleficent agenda, He confused their languages. That was the origin of the different languages of the earth. It is because of this confusion of languages that the place is called Babel.
Gen 11:9 says: “Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.”

And when the languages were confused, they were scattered to different parts of the earth. “So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.” Genesis 11:8
This is the origin of the different languages of the earth. So, we see that it was the building of the humongous tower of Babel that led to the confusion of the languages of the earth and led to the scattering of the people all across the whole earth.

And this change in languages is permanent and will remain so forever. Rev 7:9 says:“After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.”
This means that the Lord Jesus can be worshipped in every tongue and tribe under heaven. There is no special language for the worship of God.

Genesis 10

NIMROD

Gen 10:9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.

Nimrod is an important character after the flood.
He was called a mighty hunter.
He was the most ungodly man of his generation.
He was the first man to build a kingdom. It means then that he is the first man to be a king in the earth.
Notice that this Nimrod is a descendant of Ham the man that was cursed by Noah for dishonoring him as his father.
This Nimrod is the man that led the whole world in rebellion against God.
His kingdom was headquartered in Babel.
Gen 10:10 -12 “And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city.”
Notice that his descendants became equally city or kingdom builders.
This man Nimrod entrenched the government of men - Men ruling over men.
Joseph Benson the Bible commentator said about Nimrod and his setting up a kingdom, “See the antiquity of civil government, and particularly of that form of it which lodges the sovereignty in a single person.” This man is the first personification of the antichrist. He was pure evil!

Only through the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ can the influence of such individuals even in our time be subdued.

Genesis 9

THE RAINBOW

Gen 9:13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

The rainbow is such a wonder. It is beautiful. Its colors are vibrant. Whenever we see it, there is this internal assurance of something we really can’t explain. The rainbow evokes beautiful feelings of joy from us.
It is unfortunate that the homosexuals are trying their best to seize the colors of the rainbow. They are trying to desecrate it and destroy the meaning of it.
The rainbow was put there by God, as a token of His covenant that He will never destroy the world with a deluge again.

Firstly, it is also evidence that there was a deluge that drowned the earth around. It is evidence that deluge destroyed all creeping things that crept upon the earth and only eight people were saved by the reason of the Ark of Noah.
In our text God Himself says that He will set his bow in the cloud as a token of His covenant between Him and the earth that He will never destroy the earth again with a deluge.

In fact, in the Book of Revelation we read that in the very throne of God, there is a rainbow there. “And He that sat thereon was to look upon like a jasper and a sardius stone; and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in appearance like unto an emerald.” Revelation 4:3

Everytime we see the rainbow in the sky, it is for us to be reminded that the God of Heaven will never again destroy the world with a deluge. We know from Scripture that at the end of the age, He will destroy the world and renew it. But He will do it by fire, not with a deluge. Yes there was a deluge that destroyed all humans and animals on earth. It was sudden, and cataclysmic. It was a total annihilation of all living creatures on earth except for those that made it into the ark built by Noah. Every time we see the rainbow, we must remember the deluge and then be assured that never again, according to God’s covenant with the earth, will the earth be destroyed with a deluge.

The rainbow is beautiful, lovely and vibrant. When our children ask us about it then we tell them it is a reminder that God destroyed the world with a deluge and it is a token of God’s covenant that He will never use a deluge for the same end again.
