2 John 1

WALKING IN TRUTH

2 John 1:4
I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

The joy of the Apostle here is that he found out that the children of the recipient of this letter walked in the truth. This is also the joy of every minister. It is a glorious and wonderful thing to see Brethren walk in the truth of the Word that they are taught.

There is nothing like it! The joy is exhilarating! It is so wonderful to see and know that Brethren walk in the light of the word as they are taught. It is wonderful to teach on prayer, and see Brethren Praying. It is wonderful to encourage Brethren to press in and pray for an hour in tongues, and see Brethren doing it. It is exciting to teach on praying for the expansion of the kingdom, and that is the major focus of the Brethren.

Doers of the Word bring joy to the minister. John didn’t just say that he rejoiced that they are walking in the truth, rather he said that he rejoiced greatly! The joy was overflowing.

God wants you to be a doer of the Word. It not only gladdens the heart of the minister, it also gladdens God’s heart. This is because the blessing of God falls on the doers of the Word. They are the ones who honor God. To honor God is to do His Word. And doing His Word attracts His favor and blessings.
Today, walk in the truth, and you will come to the light; so that men will know that your deeds were done in God.

1 John 5

INTERTWINED

1 John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

In reading the epistle of John, you are amazed at his emphasis on loving God’s children.
In some places, we are told that the proof that we love God is if we love others especially our brethren. 1Jn 4:12 “No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.”
If we just stay with this verse and others like it, it will seem that the proof that we love God is loving others.

Then in our text today, he shows us another view of the situation. He says that we know that we love the CHILDREN OF GOD, when we love God and keep his commandments. Here it is clear that the proof that we love God’s children is when we love God and keep His commandments.

We must know that the two concepts are intertwined. One is clearly our love for others as proof that we love God. The other is our love for God as proof that we love others.

The thing is that our love for others must flow from our love for God.
There are things we must do as proof of our love for God. Our text talks about keeping His commandments. For instance, if you have to give your tithe to the Lord, you cannot give that to your spouse or your children. In this situation, that is proof to them that you love God. And that is proof to God that you love Him. When we love God, we keep His commandments, and that is proof that we love Him and it is also proof that we love our Brethren. This is because the same God whose commandments we obey, told us to love our Brethren.
The proof that we love God is that we love our Brethren, and the proof that we love our brethren is that we love God and keep His commandments. Alleluia!

1 John 4

BEGIN WITH SKEPTICISM!

1Jn 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Notice that the reason he is asking us not to believe every spirit is because many false prophets are gone into the world!
There is an epidemic of false prophets. These false prophets are operating by the anointing of evil spirits. Evil spirits find expressions through them.
He didn’t tell us to be afraid of them or to be intimidated by them. He didn’t tell us that we are helpless as far as they are concerned. He tells us to not believe every spirit. There is nothing wrong in being skeptical. In fact the instruction of the Holy Spirit is that we should first be skeptical, (BELIEVE NOT EVERY SPIRIT).
Don’t just believe every minister! Begin with skepticism, then move on to try the spirits whether they are of God. Until you have done this, and you find out that it is of God, then you can believe.
Believing is not the first thing when it comes to preachers. The first thing is skepticism.

You don’t believe because you saw a miracle; miracles are not exclusive to Christianity. You don’t believe because you heard a testimony, testimonies are not exclusive to Christianity. You believe because YOU HAVE tested or tried the spirit, and if it is the Spirit of God, then you can believe.
We live in very dangerous times. We live in a time where the enemy has many teachers, preachers and prophets. And many think that because there are miracles, it must be God. Many think that because there are testimonies, it must be God. God Himself told us that many false prophets are gone into the world.
It is godly to be skeptical of us preachers. It is godly to doubt us. You don’t have to believe us. Test us first. Try the spirit working through us first, and if it is of God, then you can believe us. How do you test the spirit working through us? Verses 2 and 3 is the answer! It is also in 2 John 1:7!
DON’T BELIEVE EVERY SPIRIT! Just Don’t!
