A very interesting story, if we may say! Here we see a nation that desired a human king, even though God had warned them about the dangers of placing their confidence in political power and human leadership (1 Samuel 8:4–22).
Yet the book makes it clear that the fundamental problem wasn't simply having a king. It was whether Israel and its kings would recognise Yahweh as the true King and submit to His word.
What do we agree with the book on?
"God is the Only True King." He establishes, evaluates, removes, and uses human leaders according to their obedience to Him. Human kingship can never replace dependence on God.
Samuel teaches that God's people must never confuse human leadership, political security, military strength, or outward success with the sovereignty of God. The blessing of leadership depends, ultimately, on submission to God's word.
We can desire legitimate things for illegitimate reasons. Leadership, institutions, technology, wealth, education, and political structures can serve society, but none of them should become a substitute for God.
Now, let's talk about it.
