GOD HAS SPOKEN

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. Hebrew 1:1-2(NIV)

In Matthew 21:33–44, Jesus told this parable: A landowner leased his vineyard to several tenants. When he sent his servants to retrieve his produce, the tenants killed them. When the landowner sent a larger group of servants to complete the errand, the tenants killed them as well. Finally, the landowner sent his own son. However, the tenants saw in the son an even greater opportunity. They killed him, seeking his inheritance.

The servants in the parable were the prophets, sent by God and rejected by the Jewish leaders. The son represented Jesus—God’s ultimate messenger. Through this parable, Jesus demonstrated God’s persistent communication with Israel, despite their objections. Hebrews also opens with a clear declaration of divine communication: “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (vv. 1–2). God has always communicated with His people through different methods.

The “but” in verse 2 does not indicate a contrast, but rather the continuation and climax of God’s communication. Jesus’ arrival was the fulfillment of the prophets’ messages, and He was a superior revelation for many reasons. He was the divinely appointed “heir of all things” (v. 2b). No prophet could claim such an inheritance. He was also the Creator of the universe, while the prophets were among the created beings (v. 2c). Jesus radiated God’s glory and was “the exact representation of his being” (v. 3a). Divine communication was no longer shadowed or indirect. To see the Son was to know the Father. Jesus was also the ultimate revelation because He alone provided the atonement for our sins (v. 3b). He alone returned to the right hand of God on high. And He alone was superior to the angels (v. 4).

REJOICE AND GIVE THANKS

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Philippians 4:4(NIV)

“Intrapersonal communication” describes how we speak to ourselves—our thoughts, our self-talk, our reflection. It includes the way we process emotion, the lies we battle, and the truth we bring to bear. Philippians chapter 4 has much to say about the way we communicate within ourselves.

In Philippians 4, Paul calls the church to a communal life of joy and peace. First, he addresses them with gushing relational language—“my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown” (v. 1). The Philippian church was dear to Paul’s heart. They were his first church plant in Europe and had supported him throughout his ministry (v. 15).

Paul then focuses on a specific conflict between two women, Euodia and Syntyche, urging them to “be of the same mind in the Lord” (v. 2). He had already stressed the importance of unity in his letter (1:27–30; 2:1–4). Now he names these women—not to shame them, but to restore them to right communion. Churchwide unity, Paul advised, is fostered one relationship at a time. Paul also invited others to mediate. As we saw in Matthew 18, reconciliation often involves the community.

Then Paul laid out a pathway to supernatural peace. It begins with rejoicing—a command repeated twice (v. 4). Rejoice is a verb, something we do rather than feel. We communicate rejoicing to God and to others. Our reason to rejoice is the Lord, who promises His presence (v. 5b).

Paul encourages us to look outward and care for others with gentleness (v. 5a), bring our concerns to the Lord in prayer (v. 6), rest in His peace (v. 7), and settle our minds on what is true, right, lovely, and so on (v. 8). Only God (v. 9), can provide the supernatural peace to govern our hearts and our minds.

WORDS THAT BUILDS UP

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne once wrote: “Words—so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become, in the hands of one who knows how to combine them!”

The apostle Paul often talked about the way we speak. In the first three chapters of Ephesians, Paul instructed the church on the blessings of redemption, their regeneration from death to life, and the reconciliation of Jews and Gentiles in the church. Chapter 4 makes a clear transition to application: “Live a life worthy of the calling you have received” (v. 1). Living this worthy life involves maintaining unity in the Spirit (vv. 2–13), maturing in love (vv. 14–16), and trading the old self for the new (vv. 17–24).

Then Paul turns his attention to the tongue. The believers’ speech was the main way to build unity, and their words should reflect their transformed identity. First, Paul called them to truthfulness (v. 25). Lies fracture the body, destroying trust, but truth- telling brings members together. Next, Paul addresses anger (vv. 26–27). He acknowledges the existence of the emotion but calls the Ephesians to resolve it quickly. Unsettled anger festers, giving Satan a foothold.

Finally, Paul challenges the Ephesians to edification. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths” (v. 29). Our communication has the power to “encourage” (literally “to put heart into” someone). Christlike communication is not simply about avoiding bad words but actively participating in God’s work of renewal and unification. When our speech reflects truth, grace, and forgiveness, the church becomes a testimony to the transforming power of the gospel.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR AUDIENCE

To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.1 Corinthians 9:22(NIV)

In 1962, Don and Carol Richardson went to Papua New Guinea (then Dutch New Guinea) to work among the Sawi tribe. The Sawi people valued revenge and practiced ritualistic cannibalism. So when the Richardsons first shared the gospel with them, they perceived Judas Iscariot as the hero because his actions brought retribution. Then, Don discovered the Sawi custom of the “peace child.” In this ritual, when two warring tribes were seeking peace, one tribe would give a newborn male infant to the other as a pledge. The receiving tribe was then bound to care for the child, ensuring peace for a whole generation. Using this framework, Don retold the gospel. The Sawi were able to grasp the depth of Christ’s sacrifice. The Richardsons’ journey is documented in their book Peace Child.

In 1 Corinthians 9, the apostle Paul discusses his motivation and method for preaching the gospel. In verses 15–18, Paul stated that his motivation was not monetary. Paul had a right to receive compensation for ministry (v. 14). However, Paul wanted nothing to hinder his communication (v. 12). So he preached voluntarily and out of obedience. His only reward was the gospel ministry itself (v. 18).

Then, Paul expressed his methodology. Paul adapted his communicative approach based on his audience. To the Jews, he spoke as a Jew. To the Gentiles, he spoke as a Gentile (v. 20). He never changed the content of the gospel. Instead, he would use humility and cultural awareness to contextualize the message for his intended audience. He wanted each person to understand this life-changing message. This is a model that missionaries and evangelists still follow today.

CREATIONS COMMUNICATE

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. Romans 1:20 (NIV)

What aspect of creation best communicates the nature of God to you? Is it the majesty of the Rocky Mountains? The pure joy of a bubbling stream? The delicate intricacy of a flower petal? The fierce power of a crashing wave?

Romans 1 describes the ways in which God communicates and how humanity has responded. Paul begins by declaring that he is “not ashamed of the gospel” (v. 16). He knows it is not merely information about God but the very power of God (v. 17).

However, Paul continues—not only had God’s righteousness been revealed, but also His wrath (v. 18). God’s anger is directed at the wicked, who ignore and suppress the truth of God’s clear revelation. Paul insists that “what may be known about God is plain to them” (v. 19). From the beginning of time, God has clearly communicated His power and His character through His creation. Paul declares God’s communication to be clear and understandable—so much so that mankind is “without excuse” (v. 20). No one can say, “He didn’t reveal Himself to me.”

Verses 21–25 describe the tragic slippery slope of people who “knew God,” who recognized Him through His revelation, but who chose not to glorify Him or thank Him for all that He had done. Their thinking became nonsensical. Their hearts became unable to perceive truth (v. 21). Sadly, they deceived themselves—perceiving themselves as wise, even though they were fools (v. 22). When divine revelation is ignored, lies fill the vacuum. These individuals became obsessed with the mortal world—worshiping the created elements and indulging their sinful desires (vv. 23–24). So God let them go. He “gave them over.” Yet, Paul reminded his Roman readers, the Creator will be forever praised (v. 25).

SPEAK BOLDLY

So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. Acts 9:28(NIV)

Saul’s conversion is one of the most dramatic in Scripture. At the start, Saul was aggressively pursuing Jesus’ disciples (v. 1). He even requested letters from the high priest, giving him permission to capture any followers of the Way in the synagogue (v. 2). However, while on the road to Damascus, Jesus spoke to him through a flashing light and audible voice: “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” (vv. 3–4). Jesus’ communication with Saul was both personal and confrontational. Saul responded, “Who are you, Lord?”

The word translated “Lord” can be a general term of respect, so Saul likely did not know who was speaking. Jesus answered: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting” (v. 5b). God then gave Saul clear instructions to enter the city, wait, and listen. Saul’s companions were speechless, and Saul was struck blind. He was unable to act on his own accord. Jesus had his attention, and Saul could only wait.

In the next conversation, Jesus spoke to Ananias in a vision, instructing him to find Saul and restore his sight (vv. 11, 12). Ananias responded honestly, expressing his fear and reluctance (vv. 13, 14). But God revealed to Ananias Saul’s new identity and mission (vv. 15, 16). In the final conversation, Ananias found Saul, laid his hands on him, called him “brother,” and restored his sight (v. 17). The scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he was baptized as a follower of Jesus (v. 18).

Immediately, Saul began to preach the gospel boldly in the Damascus synagogues (v. 20)—although he had a credibility problem. The Jews knew of his reputation and were understandably leery. That did not deter Saul, however. He continued to preach and his ministry bore fruit.

NEW COMMUNITY

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:4(NIV)

If you could time-travel to any point in biblical history, which would you choose? Pentecost would be on my top ten list as a communication event that changed the course of history. Acts 2 records this pivotal moment in history when God sent the Holy Spirit to the disciples with a rushing wind and tongues of fire (vv. 2–3). The Spirit enabled the disciples to speak in other languages (v. 4).

Jews from every country were in Jerusalem—providing a diverse audience (v. 5). They all gathered to hear the disciples’ message. Imagine their amazement when they heard the disciples speaking in their own languages (vv. 6–12). At that moment, the linguistic fracture of the Tower of Babel (Gen. 11) was reversed and redeemed through the work of the Spirit. Where Babel scattered the people through confusion, Pentecost drew people together through understanding.

Peter, who just weeks before had denied Jesus (John 18), stepped forward to boldly proclaim the gospel. He began by connecting the tongues phenomenon to Joel’s prophecy (Joel 2:28–32). Then he shared the gospel narrative—just as Jesus had called him to do (Acts 1:8). He confirmed the identity of Jesus through His miracles and signs (v. 22). He recounted the crucifixion as part of God’s redemptive plan (v. 23). And he declared Jesus’ victorious resurrection from the dead (v. 24). Peter finished: “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah” (v. 36).

Peter’s message pierced people’s hearts. They asked: “What shall we do?” (v. 37). Verses 42–47 describe this new community that God formed around their teaching, worshiping, and fellowship.

MY WITNESSES

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8(NIV)

The role of a courtroom witness is to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Witnesses are to share the facts of what they saw and experienced (not opinions or speculation), and these facts become evidence for the judge and jury.

In the book of Acts, Luke addressed his same audience—Theophilus—linking this book to the Gospel of Luke. He reminded Theophilus of the Gospel’s content: “I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach” (v. 1). Providing thorough documentation was a high priority for Luke. In verses 2–3, Luke explained that Jesus spent forty days with His followers after His suffering. During that time, Jesus provided “many convincing proofs” to these witnesses, His disciples, showing that He had truly risen from the dead. “Many convincing proofs” indicates evidence that was credible enough to be used in a court of law. Because the resurrection is central to the gospel, Jesus’ followers certainly had no doubt on this point.

During those forty days, Jesus also spoke to His followers about the “kingdom of God” (v. 3)—but His teaching apparently left them with some ambiguity, because they asked about the timeline (v. 6). Jesus would not give them a specific day or time. But in verses 4–5, He instructed the apostles to stay in Jerusalem, even though the city was volatile and even dangerous. They were waiting for the Holy Spirit, who would give them power and embolden their communication.

Jesus was clear on what they should do next: “And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (v. 8). We too are His witnesses, called upon to communicate the truth of the gospel.

TESTIFY TO THE TRUTH

“You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AU) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” John 18:37(NIV)

In 1521, Martin Luther was summoned before the assembly of the Holy Roman Empire to recant his critique of the Catholic Church. He refused unless proven wrong by Scripture, stating, “Here I stand; I can do no other.” Luther’s unrelenting position led to his excommunication—and the start of the Protestant Reformation.

John 18 documents a series of intense confrontations, from the Garden of Gethsemane to the courtyard to the courtroom, culminating in the crucifixion of Jesus. Again and again, Jesus and His disciples were challenged. Would they speak truth—even when the stakes were incredibly high?

In the garden, the all-knowing Jesus initiated a conversation with the Roman soldiers by twice asking, “Who is it you want?” (vv. 4, 7). When they answered, “Jesus of Nazareth,” Jesus disclosed His identity. The arresting party fell to the ground in response.

When Annas and Caiaphas questioned Jesus about His teaching, Jesus replied: “I have spoken openly to the world” (v. 20a). He had communicated the truth with boldness—in synagogues and temples. Meanwhile, in the courtyard, the once-brash Peter was confronted by bystanders, asking about his association with Jesus. Out of self-protection, Peter denied Jesus three times. We see that, under pressure, our communication can reject truth as easily as we can confess it.

Finally, Pilate asked Jesus directly, “Are you the king of the Jews?” (v. 33). Jesus redirected the question, exposing Pilate’s assumptions and ultimately articulating His mission: “The reason I…came into the world is to testify to the truth” (v. 37b). Pilate’s cynical question—“What is truth?”—signaled his inability to understand Jesus’ message. Truth stood before him, but he did not see.

ADDRESSING CONFLICT

Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.” Luke 17:4(NIV)

How do you address conflict? Experts suggest several tools to help. One is active listening—using eye contact and body language to build trust, then paraphrasing to confirm understanding. In active listening, we empathize with the other person’s perspective, even if we disagree. The second tool is “I-messages.” We use I-statements (e.g., I feel frustrated when…) rather than you-statements, which communicate blame. The third tool involves finding common ground. We look for those places where we still agree—our shared values and goals. Then we brainstorm solutions.

But how do we address conflict between believers? Jesus addresses this issue in Matthew 18. Here, He is teaching His disciples about life in His kingdom, including themes of humility, the lost sheep, and forgiveness. Verses 15–20 provide an important template to use when addressing sin in the church setting. Jesus called the church community to not avoid these difficult conversations, but to approach them with compassion and a goal of restoration. He gives clear steps to follow. First, the person who has observed the sinful behavior is to approach the offender privately (v. 15). Ideally, this conversation will bring confession and forgiveness and settle the matter.

However, if the offender persists, a small delegation should approach the person, seeking truth and understanding (v. 16). If the offender still refuses to listen, the church should be made aware, and the offender should be treated like an outsider (v. 17). Finally, verses 18–20 connect this process to heavenly authority. God’s people are to know that we are not alone in navigating these difficult conversations. Jesus promised His presence with His church amid conflict resolution and restoration (v. 20).
