The Right Time for Making a Choice of Partner
Ecclesiastes 3:1,6,8
Introduction
The Bible in Ecclesiastes chapter 3 mentions timing for everything under the sun. Human life operates according to time and season. This youthful time should come with careful and intentional decision-making for life. Those decision includes career choice, setting up a family, place of settlement, and many others.
As far as marriage is concerned, not everyone under the sun will be married in life, due to different reasons. So, not being married is not a sin for believers. The only sin will be to deny the gift of salvation of Jesus Christ.
For all who desire to be married and raise a family to serve the purpose of the kingdom expansion, timing and season are paramount. Thus, timing for choosing partners starts with:
- Knowing your identity in Christ – 2 Corin 5:17
One cannot put on new white attire and sit down on a dirty chair. You are new in all ramifications; you cannot keep associating with an unbeliever, who has already been packaged with a sort of irreconcilable differences. Your identity in Christ is a guarantee of your provisions in Christ’s household.
- Humble enough to follow His leading- Prov 3:5-6
Being born again does not take away your freedom of choice and personal desire. Be careful not to permit your wishes, emotions, understanding, and knowledge cancel the perfect will of God. Follow God’s counsel like the sheep follow the shepherd throughout the grazing period. Do not prove wise, understanding, and knowledge before the givers of them all.
- Maturity (spiritually, psychologically, emotionally, socially)- Luk 2:52
A mature Christian single understands time, season, and purpose in life before making any move. Like a good driver checks the car, both the body and the engine, before starting the car, let alone travelling with it. So, a marital relationship demands more than age, money, or facial outlook. Check your spiritual attainment, psychology, emotional balance, temperament, worldviews on different matters, and many more before the move.
- Having vision to pursue in life- Hab 2:2-3
Marital journey is beyond the ability to have a “one -in -town” wedding ceremony, which will go viral on the internet, but the journey needs vision that will sustain the oneness, and to be a blessing for your children’s children. Vision is a powerful element that will keep your family running without stressing your life, finances, or hurting your emotions.
- Having an accountability partner (pastors, mature Christians, godly parents)- Jhn 15:5-8
Just like the rudder in the ship or the rein in the mouth of a horse so it is important you have an accountability partner from the word go. When any partner tells you, let's keep this relationship secret from people who can caution us, then prepare relationship that will end like someone cutting an onion. Every relationship needs a higher authority to respect and receive counsel from.
- Strong alignment with God’s intentions of Marriage- Mrk 10:11-12
When there is a plan, construction is made easy. So, the intended couple must align with God’s intention for marriage, for better or for worse. Until marriage travels on the way of better for worse, it can not travel on the boulevard of “for better, for better”. Your alignment with God's words attracts a blissful experience in marriage.
- Openness and taking responsibilities. Jam 5:16
No past is hidden for long, because our life today is an extension of yesterday. Be open and take responsibility for your actions. Do not bury your past life without permission from the intended partners. We are now living in a global village because of internet connectivity. Be reminded that your next neighbour can be a danger to your relationship.
- Financial sustainability- Ecc 10:19;
Not too much money, but at least the amount that sustains your daily life, and that has the prospect of growing to meet tomorrow’s expenses and the pursuit of your life vision.
Conclusion
The right time depends on many factors. People suggest age instead of maturity. The journey of two people with wagons of family members, friends, neighbours, and even the community. Christian marriage is between a man and a woman, but culture and people cannot be jettisoned. Every intended Christian couple must be prayerfully prepared for those wagons for a blissful marital life experience.
God bless you.
