Today, we celebrate the 70th birthday of Most Rev. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, Bishop of Nsukka Diocese.

For seven decades, God has blessed the Church with a gifted pastor, scholar, teacher and shepherd whose ministry has been marked by deep faith, intellectual excellence and commitment to the Gospel.

As Your Lordship enters this beautiful milestone, may the Lord renew your strength, deepen your joy and continue to make your life a blessing to the People of God.

✝️ DID YOU KNOW? WHY THERE MUST BE AT LEAST TWO CANDLES AT MASS πŸ˜³πŸ€”

Most Catholics see candles at Mass and think:

β€œThey’re just decoration.”
Or: β€œThey make the altar look beautiful.”

But in the Church, nothing at the altar is decoration.

Candles are not there for mood.
They are there for meaning.

✝️ The Church Requires Candles

According to the Church’s liturgical law, at least two candles must be present at every Mass.

Not one.
Not zero.
At least two.

Why?

✝️ Because the Mass Is a Sacred Act, Not a Speech

In ancient times, candles were used for light.
But the Church kept them even after electric light existed.

Why?

Because candles proclaim something:

β€œThis place is holy.
This action is divine.”

Whenever sacrifice is offered to God in Scripture, light is present.

✝️ Two Candles: A Silent Witness

In biblical tradition, two witnesses are required to establish truth.

Scripture says:

β€œA matter is confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”

At Mass, the candles stand as silent witnesses to what is happening on the altar:

the sacrifice of Christ

the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist

The altar is never left without witness.

✝️ Light Before the Presence of God

Candles burn:

as a sign of Christ, the Light of the world

as a symbol of prayer rising to heaven

as an image of self-giving, the candle destroys itself to give light

This is exactly what happens at Mass: Christ gives Himself completely.

✝️ Why Not Just One Candle?

One candle can suggest:

private prayer

personal devotion

But the Mass is never private.

Two candles say:

β€œThis is the public worship of the Church.”

It is Christ acting through His Body, the Church.

✝️ More Candles, Greater Solemnity

On solemn feasts, you will see:

four candles

six candles

sometimes seven (when a bishop celebrates)

This is not excess.

It is the Church saying:

β€œToday, we celebrate with greater joy and honor.”

But never fewer than two.

✝️ The Message Is Clear

The altar is not a stage.
The priest is not performing.
The Mass is not ordinary.

Two candles quietly declare:

β€œHe is here.
Heaven is open.
Pay attention.”

✝️ So Next Time You See the Candles…

Don’t ignore them.

They are preaching without words.
They are worshipping without sound.
They are reminding you:

Christ is present.
Christ is offered.
Christ is our light.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SAINT TIMOTHY ( SAINT OF THE DAY 26/ JANUARY ).

St. Timothy, honored on January 26, was born in Lystra, Lycaenia, to a Greek father and Eunice, a Jewish convert. He met St. Paul in Lystra and soon became his faithful companion. To reduce tensions with the Jewish community, Timothy, whose mother was Jewish, agreed to undergo circumcision as Paul recommended. He then joined Paul on his second missionary journey.

Timothy was crucial in the early Christian Church, often serving as Paul's messenger. When Paul had to flee Berea due to opposition, Timothy remained to support the growing Christian community there. His significant work in Thessalonica led Paul to write his first letter to the Thessalonians after receiving updates from Timothy in Corinth.

Later, Timothy traveled with Erastus to Macedonia and Corinth, strengthening Paul's teachings. He likely stayed with Paul during his imprisonments in Caesarea and Rome. Eventually, Timothy became the first bishop of Ephesus.

His unwavering dedication to his faith is evident, and it is believed he was martyred in Ephesus, stoned for opposing a pagan festival.

Paul's two letters to Timothy, written around 65 AD from Macedonia and later from Rome during Paul's final imprisonment, highlight their deep personal and spiritual bond. Timothy's legacy endures as a steadfast leader in early Christianity, exemplifying loyalty and courage in the face of persecution.

FAMILY WEEK SEMINAR β€” ST. TIMOTHY CATHOLIC CHURCH, DEGUN

Today, St. Timothy Catholic Church, Degun, joyfully celebrated her Family Week Seminar, bringing families and members of the parish together to reflect on the importance of building strong, loving, peaceful, and Christ-centred homes.

The family is the first school of love, faith, discipline, forgiveness, and unity. It is where children learn values, where parents provide guidance, and where members learn to support one another through life's challenges.

The Bible reminds us in Joshua 24:15: β€œAs for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

As we celebrate Family Week, may every family in our parish grow stronger in faith, deeper in love, richer in understanding, and united in Christ.

May God heal broken relationships, strengthen parents, guide our children, bless marriages, and make every Christian home a place of peace, prayer, love, and joy.

Cardinals hold a place of great honor and responsibility in the Catholic Church. Appointed by the Pope, they are his closest advisers and collaborators in guiding the universal Church. Their red garments symbolize their willingness to defend the faith and serve Christ, even to the shedding of their blood.

Through deep faith, wisdom, and pastoral care, Cardinals help the Pope in governing the Church and in making important decisions that affect Catholics worldwide.

1️⃣ Advisers to the Pope
Cardinals form the College of Cardinals, a special body that assists the Holy Father in leading the Church. They are often called to advise him on matters of doctrine, discipline, and global Church affairs. Their wisdom and experience help the Pope carry out his universal mission.

2️⃣ Leaders of Dioceses and Congregations
Many Cardinals also serve as Archbishops or heads of major dioceses around the world. Others oversee important departments in the Vatican Curia, where they help manage the Church’s administration, evangelization, and charitable works.

3️⃣ Electors of the Pope
