Vespers II of the Ascension of the Lord

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD (SOLEMNITY): A Community with Its Eyes on the Earth. The gospel and the first reading recount how Jesus entered the glory of his Father. But the images used are not easy for us to understand and we run the risk of looking on the feast of Ascension with our eyes raised to the sky. This is exactly the opposite of what we should do. It is a feast that invites us to look to earth, to people among whom we are called to make present the work of the Master. Though Jesus was no longer visible, the disciples were full of joy and the gospel hints at the reason for it. And these same reasons should cause us to be joyful too. The second reading completes the message. Even though we must keep our eyes on the earth, we know that human life is not enclosed by it nor does it end within the narrow confines of this world.

FIRST READING
“As they were looking on, he was lifted up.”
The beginning of the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 1: 1- 11)

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me, for John baptised with water, but before many days you shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” So

*Litany of Humility*

O Jesus, meek and humble of heart,
-Make our hearts like unto thine.

From the desire of being esteemed,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the desire of being loved,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the desire of being extolled,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the desire of being honored,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the desire of being praised,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the desire of being preferred to others,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the desire of being consulted,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the desire of being approved,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the fear of being despised,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the fear of suffering rebukes,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the fear of being calumniated,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the fear of being forgotten,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the fear of being ridiculed,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the fear of being wronged,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the fear of being suspected,
-Deliver me, O Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I,
-Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be esteemed more than I,
-Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,
-Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be chosen and I set aside,
-Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be praised and I go unnoticed,
-Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be preferred to me in everything,
-Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should,
-Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

"There are three things, my brethren, by which faith stands firm, devotion remains constant, and virtue endures. They are prayer, fasting and mercy. Prayer knocks at the door, fasting obtains, mercy receives. Prayer, mercy and fasting: these three are one, and they give life to each other."
-- St Peter Chrysologus

FIRST READING
“You shall be the father of a multitude of Nations.”
A reading from the Book of Genesis (Genesis 17:3-9)

In those days: Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. And I will give to you, and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” And God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.”

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm105:4-5.6-7.8-9 (R. 8a)
R/. The Lord remembers his covenant forever.

Turn to the Lord and his strength;
constantly seek his face.
Remember the wonders he has done,
his marvels and his words of judgment. R/.

O children of Abraham, his servant,
O descendants of the Jacob he chose,
he, the Lord, is our God;
his judgments are in all the earth. R/.

WORLD DAY FOR THE UNBORN CHILD

THEME OF THE FEAST: The Virgin Will Give Birth to a Son
The God of Israel is always ready to work wonders, on condition that we place all our trust in him. The first reading presents us with the young Ahaz, king of Israel, who must make an embarrassing choice: to act according to human logic in politics and diplomacy or to trust the promises of God. The gospel presents us with one of his wonderful works: what he did for Mary, the virgin, who, unlike Ahaz, placed her full trust in him, and put her “nothingness” at his disposal. She became his masterpiece. All are called to experience the powerful love of God. The second reading tells us how: not through the offering of holocausts and sacrifices, but by “doing the will of the Lord” as Jesus and Mary did.

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Heb 10: 5, 7
The Lord said, as he entered the world: Behold, I come to do your will, O God.

COLLECT
O God, who willed that your Word should take on the reality of human flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary, grant, we pray, that we, who confess our Redeemer to be God and man, may merit to become partakers even in his divine nature. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

FIRST READING
“Behold, a virgin shall conceive. ”
A reading from the Book of Isaiah 7 :10-14; 8: 10

In those days: The Lord spoke to Ahaz, “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Take counsel together, bu

Vespers I of the 4th Sunday of Lent

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and never forget all his benefits; it is he who forgives all your sins.

COLLECT
Rejoicing in this annual celebration of our Lenten observance, we pray, O Lord, that with our hearts set on the paschal mysteries, we may be gladdened by their full effects. Through our Lord.

FIRST READING
“I desire mercy and not sacrifice.”
A reading from the Book of the Prophet Hosea (Hosea 6:1-6)

“Come, let us return to the Lord; for he has torn, that he may heal us; he has stricken, and he will bind us up. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him. Let us know, let us press on to know the Lord; his going forth is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.” What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away. Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets, I have slain them by the words of my mouth, and my judgement goes forth as the light. For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God, rather than burnt offerings.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 51:3-4.18-19.20-21ab
R/. I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.

Have mercy on me, O God,
According to your merciful love;
According to your great compassion,
Blot out my transgressions.
Wash me completely from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin. R/.

For in sacrifice you take no delight;
Burnt offering from me would not please you.
My sacrifice to God, a broken spirit:
A broken and humble heart, O God, you will not spurn. R/.

In your good pleasure, show favour to Sion;
Rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
Then you will delight in right sacrifice,
Burnt offering wholly consumed. R/.
