the story of Imam al-Tirmidhi :
He is Abu ‘Isa Muhammad ibn ‘Isa ibn Sawrah ibn Musa al-Sulami al-Tirmidhi, a great scholar of Hadith and one of the authors of the Six Canonical Books.
Birth and early life:
He was born around 209 AH (824 CE) in Tirmidh, in the region of Khurasan (present-day Central Asia).
Seeking knowledge:
From a young age, he devoted himself to the study of Hadith. He traveled widely to Khurasan, Iraq, and the Hijaz to learn from leading scholars. Among his most famous teachers were Imam al-Bukhari (whom he greatly admired), Imam Muslim, Abu Dawud, and Qutaybah ibn Sa‘id.
Scholarly status:
Imam al-Tirmidhi became a renowned Hadith master (hafiz) and expert in narrators and hidden defects (‘ilal). He combined Hadith knowledge with fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), earning high praise from scholars.
His famous book – Al-Jami‘ (Sunan al-Tirmidhi):
His book is unique because he:
Recorded Hadiths and clarified their grading (ṣaḥīḥ, ḥasan, or gharīb).
Mentioned the opinions of scholars on legal rulings.
This made his work both a Hadith collection and a fiqh reference.
His blindness:
It is reported that he became blind in the later part of his life. Some scholars mention it was due to excessive weeping out of fear of Allah, though Allah knows best.
Death:
He passed away in 279 AH (892 CE) in Bugh, near Tirmidh.
Praise of scholars:
Al-Dhahabi said: “The Imam, the Hadith master, author of Al-Jami‘, one of the great Imams of Islam.”
Ibn Hajar said: “He was trustworthy and a حافظ (hafiz), among the leading scholars of Hadith.”
May Allah have mercy on him and reward him for his service to Islam and the Sunnah.
