SIGNS OF RED FLAGS IN A RELATIONSHIP

Not every relationship that starts beautifully ends beautifully. Sometimes, what begins with smiles, butterflies, and sweet promises can slowly reveal cracks that should never be ignored. Imagine this: a young lady meets someone who seems perfect, caring, attentive, and full of affection. Weeks later, she begins to notice subtle changes. He dictates who she should talk to, mocks her dreams, and makes her feel guilty for wanting independence. At first, she excuses it as love, but in truth, these are silent alarms ringing loudly in her heart.

These warning signs are what we call red flags. They are not always obvious at the beginning, but they quietly show that something may be unhealthy in the relationship. Red flags are signals that, if ignored, can lead to heartbreak, pain, or even danger. If you notice any of the following in the relationship you are currently engaging, it may be a clear message that the relationship is heading for the rocks.

CONTROL AND MANIPULATION
Dictating what you should do, constantly trying to control your actions, decisions or choices. Guilt-tripping, making you feel guilty for not complying with their demands or expectations.

DISRESPECTING AND BELITTING
Constant criticism, regularly criticising or belittling your opinion or your accomplishments. Dismissive behaviour, ignoring or dismissing your feelings, needs or concerns.

LACK OF TRUST AND HONESTY
Dishonesty, lying, hiding information or being secretive about their actions or intentions. Jealousy and possessiveness, stemming from insecurity or mistrust.

EMOTIONAL OR PHYSICAL ABUSE
Using verbal aggression, insults or put-downs to control or intimidate you. Engaging in physical violence or threats of physical harm.

DISREGARD FOR BOUNDARIES
Ignoring personal space, needs or boundaries. Pressuring you for physical or emotional intimacy before you are ready.

GASLIGHTING
Making you question your own perception, memories or sanity. Denying previous agreements, conversations or promises.

LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY
Blaming circumstances or you for their mistakes or problems. Avoiding responsibility for their actions, decisions or wrongdoings.

A healthy relationship should bring peace, joy, and growth, not confusion, fear, or constant pain. Red flags are like flashing lights on a dangerous road. Ignoring them can lead to a crash. If you notice these signs, take them seriously. Protect your heart, guard your well-being, and never settle for less than the love God has designed for you. The right relationship will not chain you down, it will lift you up.

TOPICS TO DISCUSS DURING COURTSHIP (PART 2)

Courtship is not just about romantic outings, long conversations, or sweet messages. It is a season of preparation where intending couples should build a strong foundation for the future. Many marriages face challenges because important conversations were neglected before the wedding. Love is beautiful, but love alone is not enough. Wisdom, understanding, and agreement on key life matters are equally necessary.

Here are important areas intending couples should prayerfully and openly discuss before saying “I do.”

CAREER
Ask one another: Do you currently have a career path, or is it something you plan to develop later? It is important to know if your partner has ambitions such as furthering their education or building a career within marriage. This helps both parties prepare mentally, emotionally, and financially.

GOALS
Goals give direction. Intending couples should discuss both personal and joint goals. Are you ready to support each other in achieving them? Can you work together towards shared aspirations such as building a home, raising godly children, or planning investments? Supporting your partner in achieving their goals builds trust and shows dependability.

HOBBIES
Hobbies bring excitement into relationships. Share the things you enjoy doing in your leisure time such as reading, music, sports, or travelling. Learning about each other’s interests and finding ways to enjoy them together can spark joy and strengthen your bond.

BELIEFS
Faith and belief systems guide values and decisions. Intending couples must discuss their religious beliefs and where they stand spiritually. Even if both do not share identical beliefs, respect and understanding are vital. However, for Christians, walking in agreement according to 2 Corinthians 6:14 is essential to building a godly home.

HEALTH
Health matters should never be overlooked. Be transparent about any medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, genotype, or blood group issues. These discussions help intending couples prepare to support one another in times of need and also give peace of mind for the future.

S*X
S*x is often a sensitive but very important topic. Intending couples need to have honest conversations about their views and expectations concerning intimacy in marriage. Ignoring this subject can lead to frustration later. With a biblical understanding, s*x within marriage strengthens unity rather than creating division.

SKILLS
Every individual has unique gifts and abilities. One person may be skilled in cooking while the other is gifted in music or organisation. Sharing your skills helps you discover ways to complement each other and bring creativity into your future home.

DOMESTIC DUTIES
Marriage thrives when there is teamwork. Discuss how you both feel about house chores. Will they be shared fairly or should one person handle them? Clarifying these expectations early prevents unnecessary quarrels in marriage.

PETS
If one of you loves animals and the other does not, or if one is allergic to cats or dogs, it is better to talk about this now. Understanding each other’s stance on pets avoids unnecessary conflict later.

HANDLING DISAGREEMENTS
Disagreements are part of every relationship, but how they are handled determines the outcome. Intending couples should discuss their approach to conflict. Do you avoid issues, argue openly, or seek peaceful resolution? Learning how to resolve conflicts early builds maturity and lays a foundation for a stronger marriage.

Courtship is a God-given opportunity to prepare for the future and to lay a strong foundation for marriage. Intending couples who avoid these conversations may face bigger challenges later, but those who address them prayerfully will enjoy peace and unity. Remember that marriage is not built on emotions alone but on truth, understanding, and godly commitment. Keep Christ at the centre of your relationship, and you will build a home filled with love, trust, and harmony.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS TO NAVIGATE MARITAL CHALLENGES IN A GODLY HOME
In many homes today, it's not the absence of love that causes cracks in a marriage. It's the absence of understanding.
Two people may share a house, a bed, even children, yet feel worlds apart. Why? Because while they may be speaking, they’re not truly communicating. But what if communication, done the godly way, could become the bridge that heals, restores and strengthens?
Let’s explore Effective Communication Skills that can help you navigate marital challenges and build a truly godly home:

ACTIVE LISTENING
Don’t just hear, listen. Be fully present. Put your phone away, silence distractions and tune in to your partner’s heart. Reflect their words to show you truly understand
SPEAK WITH CLARITY AND LOVE
Say what’s on your heart without placing blame. Use statements like “I feel...” instead of “You always...” Let your words build connection, not division
EMPATHY AND VALIDATION
Before rushing to solve the issue, pause to feel your partner’s pain. Let them know their emotions are real and valued. Sometimes, “I understand how you feel” is more powerful than advice
HANDLE CONFLICTS WITH WISDOM
Disagreements do not have to become emotional wars. Remain calm. Stay focused on the issue. Avoid insults or shutting down. Choose solutions over pride
SEEK GOD TOGETHER
Invite God into your conversations. Pray before and after serious discussions. Let God’s Word guide your tone, timing and temper. Couples that pray together grow together
FORGIVE FREELY AND GIVE GRACE
You will hurt each other sometimes but do not let anger harden your heart. Forgive quickly. Extend grace even when it is not earned. This is how Christ loves us
Final Thought
Godly marriages are not built on perfection but on intentional communication, humility, forgiveness and love. When we learn to speak like Christ and listen like Christ, we create a home where peace reigns and love flourishes
Let’s keep building homes where hearts are heard, not just voices

BUILDING A GODLY HOME: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP

On a warm Sunday morning, Chinedu and Amaka found themselves beneath the familiar mango tree after service. As they reminisced about their shared memories in youth group, Amaka confessed her excitement and her nerves about the future. “We dream of building a home that honours God, but how do we know if we are ready?” she asked softly. Chinedu smiled thoughtfully and recalled the many conversations they had shared with mentors and pastors. He said, “Let us ask ourselves the hard questions, Do we share the same faith and values, Can we trust each other to act with integrity, Are we prepared to grow together emotionally and spiritually?” What started as a simple question became a blueprint for a partnership rooted in faith, integrity and love. Below are the nine key questions they asked themselves and the qualities those questions revealed.

DO WE SHARE A COMMON FAITH AND VALUES?

A relationship that honours God begins when both partners prioritise spiritual growth. This means attending worship together, praying without hesitation and studying Scripture side by side. When honesty, integrity and respect become shared convictions, your partnership will stand firm even when storms arise.

DOES OUR CHARACTER REFLECT INTEGRITY?

True character shines brightest under pressure. Notice if your partner’s actions align with their promises especially during difficult seasons. Do they speak the truth with gentleness? Do they readily admit mistakes and seek reconciliation? Integrity in small matters foretells faithfulness in greater ones.

ARE WE EMOTIONALLY MATURE?

A godly home thrives on emotional intelligence. A mature partner recognises their feelings, pauses before reacting and communicates with empathy. In moments of conflict, they seek understanding rather than victory. This ability to navigate emotions constructively fosters lasting harmony.

DO WE SHOW RESPECT AND UNCONDITIONAL LOVE?

Observe how your partner treats you and those around them. Kindness, patience and empathy are hallmarks of unconditional love. When they celebrate your strengths and embrace your imperfections, they reflect the selfless love Christ has for the church.

ARE OUR LIFE GOALS AND VISION ALIGNED?

Marriage is a shared journey. Discuss your dreams for family, career and ministry openly and honestly. When your long-term aspirations whether raising children, serving your community or pursuing God’s calling align, you can move forward as a unified team and support each other’s goals.

DO WE ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER?

Every godly home is built on a foundation of mutual encouragement. Notice if your partner speaks life into your dreams and offers practical help when you feel overwhelmed. Their willingness to stand by you in both big moments and everyday tasks reveals a heart committed to your well-being.

HOW DO WE RELATE TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS?

The way someone treats loved ones often reflects their deepest values. Pay attention to your partner’s interactions with family and friends, do they show respect and loyalty? Healthy relationships with others demonstrate their capacity for love and wise boundaries in your future home.

ARE WE COMMITTED TO PERSONAL GROWTH?

A thriving marriage requires two individuals dedicated to becoming better versions of themselves. Look for a partner who pursues self-improvement through reading, mentorship or spiritual disciplines and who celebrates and supports your own journey of growth.

DO WE SEEK GOD’S GUIDANCE TOGETHER?

Finally, let prayer be your compass. Couples who pray together invite God’s presence into every decision. When you seek His wisdom before making significant choices big or small you ensure that your path reflects His purpose and brings glory to His name.

Just as Chinedu and Amaka discovered under the mango tree building a godly home is more than grand gestures, it is a daily commitment to faithfulness, honesty and love. By asking yourselves these nine questions and embracing the qualities they reveal you lay a foundation that endures life’s challenges and honours God in every season. How will you apply these principles in your relationship today? Share your reflections or tag someone who needs this encouragement.

NURTURING A GODLY MARRIAGE: BIBLICAL SOLUTIONS FOR COMMON CHALLENGES

Marriage reflects God’s design for partnership, love and mutual growth. When difficulties arise, inviting God’s wisdom and grace into every area of your relationship transforms obstacles into opportunities. The following examples show how common issues can be addressed prayerfully and biblically, helping couples build a stronger, more Christ-centred union.

COMMUNICATION ISSUE
Couples can begin important conversations by praying together, asking God to guide their words and help them perceive each other’s thoughts and feelings. This practice cultivates unity and reminds both partners that they are on the same team.

ACTIVE LISTENING
Couples can practice active listening by setting aside distractions, making eye contact and reflecting back what they hear. Truly hearing and understanding each other demonstrates respect and builds trust.

SPEAK TRUTHFULLY AND KINDLY
Couples can strive to speak with honesty and compassion, following the biblical principle of speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Kind words delivered with gentleness strengthen the heart of your spouse.

FINANCIAL STRESS
Couples can seek God’s guidance in every financial decision, trusting in His provision and sovereignty. They can work together to create a budget that aligns with their shared values and priorities. Practising generosity, even in small ways, reinforces their dependence on God’s faithfulness.

INTIMACY AND EMOTIONAL CONNECTION
Couples can prioritise intentional time together, whether through a weekly date or simple moments of affection. Showing appreciation and following Jesus’ command to love one another (John 13:34–35) nurtures both emotional and physical intimacy. If deeper issues persist, seeking godly counselling can provide helpful guidance.

TRUST AND FIDELITY
Couples can commit to faithfulness as outlined in Malachi 2:14–15 by embracing transparency: no secret passwords or hidden accounts. Practising honesty and inviting accountability from trusted friends or mentors fosters a secure and faithful bond.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Couples can seek God’s wisdom when conflicts arise, following James 3:17–18. They can choose forgiveness quickly, as encouraged in Ephesians 4:32, and work together to find solutions that honour God and respect each other’s perspectives. Humility and selflessness, putting the other’s needs first, reflect Christ’s love in action.

Every marriage faces challenges, but a Godly home turns those moments into testimonies of grace. By praying together, listening with empathy, speaking truth in kindness and relying on Scripture, couples can navigate any difficulty. Today, choose to invite God into every conversation, decision and conflict, and watch Him strengthen your bond.
