Think about it: this is the only time in eternity that we get to worship through pain and hard times. One day we will be in glory and won’t have this opportunity again.

When times get tough, remember that you GET to respond in worship. You get to bring Him this unique offering. You get to discover that everything we need really is in His presence.

What Are You Expecting

What are you expecting from God? Do you find yourself thinking, You know what, God, I’ve done a lot for You. I’ve followed You. I have served You. And now I am expecting some things. Are you like that? Because here’s the truth: The Lord does a lot for us. If all God ever did for us was keep us from hell, how could we not sing His praises through all eternity? But the Lord does far more for us than save us from hell. The part we need to understand is our mindset.

If you forget you are a servant, you can start thinking God is the servant. And you can start thinking, Well, I did my part. Now I’m home. I’m hungry. Feed me God. Do what I want You to do and take care of these things. And that’s not good. We are the servants and He is the Master.

Here are some things we might expect from God:

1. Protection for our children. I don’t want my kids to get hurt. Do You see me over here leading a small group? I don’t mind serving You, God, but I have some expectations.

2. Provision of financial needs. I work ethically for You. So give me a job that pays for what I want.

3. Health and healing. I have to be healed. If You don’t heal me, I’m going to have some harsh thoughts about You.

4. Guidance. I am making a very difficult decision right now. There is an uncertain future I’m facing. I do a lot for You; can’t You at least tell me what I’m supposed to do?

5. Salvation of a loved one. Come on God. Don’t You see me over here serving You? Can’t You just get this person saved?

But we can’t expect God to do something for us just because we do something for Him. That’s back-scratching and it’s not what authentic serving is about.

Prayer – Father, forgive me for thinking I can manipulate You into doing things for me. Help me to serve because I love You, not because I want something in return. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Luke 17:9-10
"Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do."

Humbly and Quietly

Sometimes, the time for talking is done. There are no more words to be said. We just need to serve; to do our duty. John 13:3-5 paints this picture of quiet, humble service. Jesus doesn’t announce Himself. He doesn’t point anything out. He doesn’t explain. He just serves. His was authentic service.

In Luke 22 we see what the disciples were doing when Jesus began to wash their feet. They were arguing over who was the greatest. Jesus gets up. But He wasn’t like, Knock it off! or What’s wrong with you? He just stood. And served.

I want to point out the verbs in John 13:3-5.

Rose. Laid. Took. Girded. Poured. Washed. Wiped.

Jesus went to work. Without a word, quietly, humbly, He began to serve.

Then in verse 12 John says, “When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, ‘Do you understand what I have done to you?’” It’s almost a question of desperation. It feels like He’s implying, Guys, time is running out here. And you were just arguing about who is the greatest. And this is it, do you understand?

He then said, “ I . . . have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” Jesus gave this example. We are to serve one another. Do you get it? Authentic serving is faithful serving when we are the busiest, when we would rather do something else, when no one notices, or pays us back. But we do it anyway.

Prayer – Thank You for Your Word. Help me do what it actually says. It tells me to serve faithfully. Father, I pray You would immerse me in a new season of authenticity. I want to be a genuine, faithful, sincere follower of Your great Son, Jesus Christ. So as I respond to Your Word now, I pray You would help me in Jesus’ name, Amen.

After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

Faithful in Serving Part 2

We’ve been looking at how Jesus is the perfect example of authentic, faithful service. Even when it was the busiest time of year, in His life, Jesus Christ continued to serve. When our schedules are full, we still need to serve.

Authentic serving is also continuing to serve when we want to quit. John13:1b says, “Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.” The Bible says during that time, as the cross drew near, “Jesus was very troubled in spirit” (John 13:21). As a man, He anticipated the road to the cross. As God, He anticipated the judgment of the Father.

No one would have criticized Jesus if He said, You know guys, this isn’t a good time for Me. I hope you won’t be offended, but I’d rather be alone right now. But notice how He “loved them to the end.” That’s a great thought you can come back to. Jesus loved them to the end.

Now, for some of you, there’s a word here from God. You might say, “How long is this serving going to go on?” To the end—that’s how long. “How long am I going to stick with them?” To the end—that’s how long you’re going to stick with them. “How long am I going to keep doing this, God? I think it’s getting hard. I think it’s time I started thinking about myself.” Incorrect. It is not time. You are a follower of Jesus Christ. You say, “I just don’t think I can go on, James.” No, you cannot. But in your desperation you are finding a provision from the Lord you never thought possible. And it’s right there for you. Depend on it and recommit yourself. You are going to love and serve until when? To the end.

Prayer – Father, thank You for the clarity of Your Word and the example of Your Son. I need Your provision to serve and love until the end. I’m getting weary, Lord, and I need Your strength to serve authentically. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I want to point out a few things about Jesus’ serving. Above all else, He served faithfully. The concept of faithfulness is mentioned 82 times in Scripture, mainly by Jesus and Paul.

In fact, when we stand before Jesus Christ someday we will be told, “Well done, good, and faithful servant.” That’s the Suma Cum Laude of a compliment from Jesus Christ.

Faithfulness is a pretty simple concept: Constant in the performance of duty. If you’re faithful in service, you don’t give up. You just keep on doing the things God called you to do. 1 Corinthians 4:2 is the New Testament classic passage on this: “Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.” Faithful serving is required.

The discipline of service includes serving even when my schedule is full. Look at Jesus’ example of faithful serving in John 13:1. The Passover was the high point in the Jewish calendar. Think Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s all rolled into one. A very busy time. Now, six times in the gospels, Jesus had said His time had not yet come, but John 13:1 says, “When Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father.” His time had come. He is about to go to the cross, and suffer as an atoning sacrifice for sin! And it’s Passover.

How many people would give Jesus a hall pass if He said, “You know, I’d try to take care of you all, but I’ve got to focus on My own program and needs right now. I’ll be in touch.” Now that would make sense, right? He didn’t do that, did He? No.

Here’s the point: Authentic serving is serving even when my schedule is full, even when I’m the busiest, or when I have the greatest demands on me.

Prayer – Father, forgive me for thinking my time is my own. Your Son gave the example for service, and it was to do Your will, no matter what. Help me serve that way too, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
