A godly heritage

‭2 Timothy 1:5 KJV‬
[5] when I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

As much as it is good to leave behind material wealth for our children and grandchildren, it is far greater and more noble to make sure that our children know the Lord (Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Proverbs 22:6). They should be able to stand and declare that they belong to the Lord. This should be our highest priority concerning the children the Lord has given us. You can build an empire and give your children the best education, but if they do not know the Lord, you have failed in what matters most (Mark 8:36). We are in an era where every belief system is being questioned, especially the Christian faith, but it is quite unfortunate that only a few are well grounded enough to defend the faith and instruct those who are confused (1 Peter 3:15; Jude 3).
The Bible references reinforce the emphasis on passing on the knowledge of God to the next generation, the eternal value of knowing Christ, and the responsibility of believers to defend the Christian faith.

Timothy was one of the disciples of Apostle Paul who became a pastor at a very young age. Paul was not the one who started the work of discipleship in his life. Rather, it was his mother and his grandmother. Both sacrificed so much to show him the way of the Lord from a tender age and groomed him in the things of the Lord. As a result, he was thoroughly grounded in the Word of God (2 Timothy 1:5; 2 Timothy 3:14–15). The efforts of these two people, who were so dear to him, played a very vital role in building his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. They had done so much in discipling him that all Paul needed to do was build on the foundation they had already laid. Timothy's mother and grandmother understood the work of ministry, knowing that one need not stand behind the pulpit before one could do the work of ministry. They also understood that ministry can be done anywhere, especially in the home.

The unfortunate thing is that most pastors do not disciple their children. They only focus on the pulpit ministry and neglect the real work. Some years ago, I was pastoring a church that had been founded by someone else. After a while, I discovered that the founder's children did not know God at all. I decided to ask them some basic questions about the faith, but to my amazement, it was even worse than I had imagined because they could not answer those questions. Then I realised that many people only establish churches for business purposes and for recognition. It is a failure on the part of a pastor whose children do not know the Lord. Some of these pastors do not realise that no matter what heritage is given to their children, if it is not the knowledge of God, it will fizzle away in no time. God commanded His people to diligently teach His Word to their children (Deuteronomy 6:6–7), and the Apostle Paul reminded Timothy that he had known the Holy Scriptures from childhood because of the godly influence of his family (2 Timothy 3:14–15). Likewise, elders are expected to lead their households well, with children who are faithful and well instructed (1 Timothy 3:4–5; Titus 1:6).

The best thing you can give to your children, which has eternal value, is to make sure they know the Lord. The work of ministry of Timothy's mother and grandmother stands the test of time, and even today the letters addressed to him by Paul are still being read. The heritage they gave him has eternal value, and its impact continues to live on after them (2 Timothy 1:5; 2 Timothy 3:14–15). Parents, this is a timely counsel. No matter the education you are giving to your children, never leave God out of the equation. Pray for your children and show them the way of the Lord. It pays to know the Lord.

The fear of the Lord

‭Psalm 34:11-14 KJV‬
[11] Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. [12] What man is he that desireth life, And loveth many days, that he may see good? [13] Keep thy tongue from evil, And thy lips from speaking guile. [14] Depart from evil, and do good; Seek peace, and pursue it.

I welcome you to the month of August, the Lord cause men to favour you on every side in this month in Jesus' name.

One thing that should be understood is that revering God is different from having the fear of God. Revering God is being in awe of Him and honouring Him in and through what we do. It is an act of carrying God in our hearts at all times, which is also interwoven with fearing Him. The fear of God has everything to do with how we deal with our fellow human beings, knowing that every person is created in the image of God. It is important that we bear in mind that whatever you do to another person, whether good or bad, you do unto God. I presume that many people, especially believers in Christ in this generation, are not aware of this truth, and their attitude towards their fellow human beings is blocking their heavens. They pray, yet they do not receive, not because their prayers do not align with the will of God, but because the way they treat others has blocked their heaven.

The Psalmist knew something worthy of studying and practicing. He said, "Come, give me your ear, and I will teach you the fear of the Lord" (Psalm 34:11). The Psalmist was so emphatic in his statement. It shows that he knew what he was saying, and such was his secret to life. He said that if you want to enjoy life and have prolonged days on the earth that you may see good, you must learn the fear of the Lord (Psalm 34:12-14). This means that many who were short lived on this earth were not so because God did not desire that they should live long, but because they refused to adhere to the principles that guarantee long life and good health. It should be understood that this life is founded on principles, and if these principles are not followed or practised, the universe itself would work against one's life. As believers in Christ, we are not given the liberty to live carelessly but to uphold everything that is righteous. That is, we must be upright in everything we do and never frustrate the grace of God (Galatians 2:21). We are not at liberty to live anyhow, but at liberty from the dominion of darkness and to walk in righteousness.

Keeping your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking guile is a sure way to save your head from evil. I have seen people, especially Christians, who are so verbally reckless, and I wonder how Christians of this generation have gotten to such a level of recklessness. They speak ill of others, even within the household of faith. This is a clear sign of a lack of the fear of God. It has gotten to the level where pastors use the pulpit as a weapon to throw tantrums and speak ill of fellow pastors, even though they both serve the same Lord. If pastors are engaging in this unrighteousness, how much more the sheep they are shepherding? I have come to the conclusion that many people simply found their way into the church, whether through manipulation or otherwise, but have not encountered the Lord or truly heard the gospel. You cannot have heard the message of the gospel and encountered the Lord and still be at peace with speaking ill of others, not only believers but also unbelievers.

It is a betrayal of the Lord Jesus Christ to find someone whom the Lord has cleansed by His blood still being used as a tool in the hand of the devil to do evil. Anything that is unrighteous is evil. You cannot afford to have a dual personality, being righteous today and unrighteous tomorrow. This is evil in the sight of the Lord, and God cannot behold iniquity. We are told to do good, seek peace, and pursue it (Hebrews 12:14). This is not a joke at all. It is a must that we do good if we are followers of Jesus Christ. No one who is in Christ Jesus should be found being used by the devil. Wherever you find yourself as a Christian, it is compulsory that you seek peace and pursue it. Doing this is a sign that you are truly a child of the One you call your Father, and no blessing will be withheld from you.

Why does your faith fail sometimes?

‭Romans 10:16-17 KJV‬
[16] But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? [17] So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

One thing we sometimes fail to realise, even as believers in Christ, is that we are not equal with Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the God Man. During His earthly ministry, He took on the form of a man so that He could interact with mankind and accomplish His mandate for coming to the earth. God is Spirit (John 4:24), and as much as we know that the earth is a natural realm, it is only the flesh that can operate in it. Even demons cannot do anything on the earth unless they possess a willing vessel. Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ had to take on the form of a man so that He might accomplish the sacrifice He came to offer among men, yet He is Almighty God. When a man is not doctrinally sound, he will misinterpret the Scriptures and set the cart before the horse. This is why many are frustrated while claiming to be standing on the Word of God.

The Lord Jesus Christ said, "I do only those things I see My Father doing." This means He did not do anything without the permission of His Father. There were many sick people at the pool of Bethesda, yet He healed only one person, and not according to the expectations of the sick people but on the basis of mercy. The Lord did only what He was permitted to do and nothing otherwise, even though He is God. This is so because He had taken on the nature of man, and it was essential that He submitted to the will of His Father. Otherwise, He would have acted independently of the Father. Every believer in Christ today is an adopted child of God through the death of Jesus Christ and has been sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise (Hebrews 2:10; Ephesians 1:13). Therefore, it is an adoption. We should not be too boastful but should instead be appreciative of this grace and never equate ourselves with Jesus Christ.

Your faith for anything on the earth must be born out of revelation through the written Word. You cannot just be claiming things you stumbled upon in the Scriptures. That is abstract. Before you begin to present a matter to the Father on the altar of prayer which you have seen in the Scriptures, it must not be a random one but one that the Holy Spirit has opened your eyes to. It is self deception to scout promises from the pages of the Holy Scriptures and begin to bombard heaven with, "It is written!" without first sitting down to meditate on the Word and allowing it to permeate your spirit. Then you can go to the altar of prayer. By this, you will have a soft landing because your spirit must have been well saturated with the Spirit inspired Word.

Everyone believes God exists, except atheists, but does everyone know God? Absolutely not. The knowledge of God within us strengthens our walk with Him. So, one can believe in God but lack faith because faith comes through knowing Him. The more you know God, the greater your faith in Him will be. The knowledge of God that the prophet Elijah had gave him the boldness to stand alone against the four hundred prophets of Baal, and God showed up for him. Such knowledge was not merely head knowledge but heartfelt knowledge, born out of the Holy Scriptures.

I counsel you, do not just go to the altar of prayer in a critical time. First, sit down and meditate on the Word of God that speaks to what you are experiencing, or pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, when you pray like that, the Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth through the Word of God (John 16:13). Once you lay hold of that Word, stand on it firmly, and the result will be a testimony.

Radical for Christ

‭Acts 4:19-20 KJV‬
[19] But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. [20] For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

The failure of the church to take Bible study seriously is the bane of what has become of many Christians in this age. The Word of God must be taken seriously so as to ground every member of the church, from the least to the greatest (Matthew 5:19; Hebrews 5:12 to 14). The subtle act of taking out the in depth study of the Word of God in many churches is deliberate and a systematic approach to wrongly indoctrinate members in order to make them lose the real substance of the gospel (Acts 20:29-30; 2 Timothy 4:3-4). The agents of darkness called pastors, who have built their empires on the ignorance of church members over the years, have achieved this by presenting to them a pseudo gospel, which many have wholeheartedly embraced (Galatians 1:6-9; 2 Corinthians 11:13-15).

The devil is so subtle that he would serve very delicate food laced with poison, and you would joyfully receive it if you are not discerning (2 Corinthians 11:14, Matthew 24:24). The depth of the church was stolen a long time ago when some new generational churches began springing up, which has resulted in the shallowness we see in the church today. When thorough discipleship is no longer the focus of every church, whitewashed pastors would be on parade in every church, and the pulpit would also be used as a tool to manipulate ungrounded believers (Matthew 23:27, Ephesians 4:14). What we see now, and what is working effectively, is that all these unsound, ungrounded, shallow, cloudy but without water, and unbaked pastors are working so hard to open the eyes of church members who are yet to find their root in Christ to the battles of life instead of the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ (Jude 1:12, Colossians 2:6 and 7, Romans 1:16). They have been breaking, for only God knows how long, curses, evil covenants, village battles, territorial wickedness, deities of the land, and the like. Yet most of these people have never heard the gospel of Jesus Christ even once. This is so disheartening, and I am always unhappy because none of these is the gospel of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Galatians 1:6-9, Romans 10:14-17).

What we see today is more about opening people's eyes to battles than to the gospel. Hence, we hardly see those who are radical for the Lord, who stand against Satan and put their lives on the line to make sure people see the light of the gospel. These agents of darkness know that the way to make their purses fat is to shift people's eyes away from the cross and focus them on their problems. Still, they keep looking for the living among the dead, and their problems keep compounding because they have forgotten their resting place (Jeremiah 50:6 and Luke 24:5). The Lord, in these end times, is looking for those whose lives do not mean anything to them compared with making Jesus Christ known to the people through the undiluted and unadulterated word of God. It is the knowledge of the truth that sets people free and not those mountain moving prayers, which have done nothing but harden people's hearts toward one another (John 8:32).

You should not be surprised. When a three to five hour Bible study is organised, you will hardly see people in attendance, but when a twelve hour prayer programme to break evil covenants and destroy ancestral altars is called, people will troop in in their numbers. Such is the evil of our day. Well, it is not entirely the fault of these people but of pastors who have yielded to Satan to further his agenda on the earth. I pray that the Lord will open the eyes of your understanding so that you may see and repent today, in Jesus' name.

Father, by mercy visit your church and overthrow the tables of those who are merchandising the gospel in Jesus' name.

Discernment; a gift to be desired in this end time.

‭1 John 4:1 KJV‬
[1] Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

The closer we are to the end of the age, the more aggressively Satan is upping his game and increasing his antics to bring many into his bo***ge. One of the ways he does this effectively is through the deployment of false prophets to spread a pseudo gospel by watering down the efficacy of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. The war between the Light and darkness is an ongoing battle that started long ago, even in biblical times. The Lord Jesus Christ had to confront it with His doctrine, and the forces of darkness fought back by every possible means to silence Him, which they eventually achieved. However, it was all according to the will of God, so that mankind might be saved from the power of darkness.

From the early days of the Church, there have been human agents working tirelessly for the devil through distorted doctrine. They crept in to sabotage and steal the liberty of the Church which is found in Christ Jesus. They came deceiving, and even the elect could fail to discern the schemes of the devil. The Lord spoke of a thief whose purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). He was not referring to the devil himself alone but also to his agents on the earth whom he had sent on a mission into the fold to deceive the flock and redirect them into eternal damnation. The Lord also warned us about these people who come in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves (Matthew 7:15).

A whole lot of people have been deceived into believing the devil without even knowing it. They thought they were following the Lord, but they were not. On many occasions, the apostles warned believers about the antics of the devil through distorted doctrine. Apostle Paul, especially, addressed this extensively (Acts 20:29–30; 2 Corinthians 11:13–15; Galatians 1:6–9; 1 Timothy 4:1–2). They warned repeatedly, yet many are still not discerning. They come preaching lies laced with an iota of truth, and just because their messages appeal to some people, they are not challenged. This is a lack of discernment, and it is very dangerous because the end is destruction. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry who has not gone through doctrinal scrutiny, just because he is well funded and has a platform, stands behind the pulpit, spewing arrows prepared from the pit of hell and piercing those who are babes at heart. Pray for discernment!

It is not every happening church that is spiritually healthy to attend, and not everyone called a pastor is truly sent by the Lord. Not everyone who quotes the Scriptures every now and then is genuinely of the Lord. They preach the word, but they do not practise it (Matthew 7:15–23; Titus 1:16). The church, especially in Nigeria, has been conditioned to pray against imaginary enemies, thereby stereotyping certain people as enemies. This is not of God. Instead, it hinders the spiritual growth of some people. We are saved to save others through the preaching of the gospel and not to focus on enemies (Mark 16:15; 2 Corinthians 5:18–20). This is one of the weapons the devil uses to shift our focus away from the Lord Jesus Christ (Hebrews 12:2). Be discerning (1 John 4:1).
