CHRISTIANITY AND POLYGAMY
More than ever before, there has been an increase in the agitation for polygamy among Christians today, especially on social media. These agitators propagate that polygamy is right, and should be encouraged among Christians. The following are the four (4) focal points on which their argument is based:
1. There's nowhere in the Bible where it is expressly stated that Christians should not marry two or more wives.
2. The Bible is not against polygamy because men in Bible days had more than one wives, and still had a great relationship with God. An example of such was David.
3. The Bible is not against polygamy because, even in the Bible, it is said that women will so much outnumber men, that seven (7) women will be willing to be married to one man, even at their own expense, just to take away the shame of singlehood.
4. Today's reality of having more women in population than men, which has resulted in the inability of many mature women to get a man to marry them.
I have always heard these arguments being put forth, and I never bothered myself about it. But the Lord nudged my heart today to address it.
One of the signs of the endtime is that people will use the scriptures to say whatever they want it to say. And of course, people who are looking for justification to do what they desire to do will gladly receive it.
The question is, how tenable are these points? I will like us to consider them one by one, starting with the last one:
4. Are women truly more than men today? I don't know where they got this from, but a Google search can easily confirm this. According to Google, Female population of the World fell gradually from 49.9 % in 1973 to 49.7 % in 2022. So, in the last 50 years, Male popular has been more than female: 50.3% to 49.7%.
3. Isaiah's prophecy (chp 4:1) often quoted out of context to say what is contrary to its true position. In chapter 3, Isaiah prophesied of God's judgement coming upon Jerusalem and Judah for backsliding. He listed out the punishment that was to come on their women in vs 16 - 24, and that of the men in verse 25, saying, "Your men shall fall by the sword, and your mighty in the war." He then began chapter 4 by telling them the effect of their men falling by the sword, "And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, “We will eat our own food and wear our own apparel; only let us be called by your name, to take away our reproach.”" Now, this is what some use as justification for polygamy.
2 & 1. David had many wives and there is no scriptures that suggests that God scolded him for it. It's important to note that David lived in a dispensation that was different from ours. Some things were permitted then that are not now. Jesus made this known in Matt. 19:8. While introducing the new dispensation, He reinstated the original intention of God for marriage by saying, "...‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'." Please note, "... the two (not three, not four) shall become one flesh."
Marriage, for a Christian, is designed by God, to be a prototype of Christ's marriage to the Church. Jesus does not have two (2) Brides.
Now, what about our advanced sisters yet to be married?
It is important we know that God does not only have His plan for every of His children, He also has a time for every of His plans for them. He may not come in our time, but He never misses His time. Zechariah and Elizabeth desired a baby earlier in their marriage, but John never came until they were old, because there was an appointed time for the purpose he was coming to fulfill. Though He may tarry, please wait for Him. He makes all things beautiful, ONLY IN HIS TIME.
WHEN POLYGAMISTS GET BORN AGAIN:
Paul the apostle, while listing out the qualifications of anyone who is to be ordained a Church leader, insisted that such a one must be "the husband of one wife." That simply suggests that there were people with more than one wives in the church. And since a Born Again Christian is not permitted to take a second wife, it simply means that they must have had those wives before they got Born Again. They came to Christ with them, and they were accepted for who they were. But they couldn't be ordained into Church leadership.
