CREATED FOR GOOD WORK
God created us for good works. He didn't just bring us into existence; he made us with a purpose. Everything Christ has done in us, all the righteousness, all the blessings, all the wealth of God in Christ; is so that we can produce good works. If you keep shouting, "I'm blessed, l'm a saint," but never produce good works, you are missing the point. God created us to walk in them. He wants us to live soberly, righteously, and honorably.
Good works are different from finished works. Finished works are what Christ accomplished for us: redemption, righteousness, forgiveness, sanctification etc. Our job in finished works is to believe and receive. Good works, on the other hand, are what we do as believers to glorify God. They are the things we actively perform because we are already saved. They include our acts of kindness, generosity, holiness, moral living etc.
For example, when you reject something that dishonors God or help someone in need because you are honoring Christ, that is a good work. When you join in the projects going on in your local church, when you give your money or resources, that is a good work. You are doing it to glorify God, not to be seen of men. The Bible says good works should flow naturally from the believer naturally, because they are already in Christ.
There are also dead works. Dead works and good works can look alike, but the heart determines the difference. Dead works are actions performed to try to gain God's approval or love. Fasting, giving and prayer, can be good works if done in Christ, but if done for show, they become dead works. You may fast, pray, or give, but if your motivation is self, the work is dead. Jesus said, if you do it to be seen, you have your reward already. Good works bring God glory; dead works bring self-glory.
We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works. As believers, we are called to live a life that honors God in all things, showing kindness, generosity, holiness, and righteousness, not for reward, but because we are His children.
Happy Sunday!
