About the Catholic bishops meeting with Tinubu...
8 THINGS THE CATHOLIC BISHOPS OF NIGERIA TOLD TINUBU DURING THEIR MEETING WITH HIM
In the recent visit of delegates of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria to Tinubu, summarily, there were 8 things they told him, or demanded of him, if you prefer, and I have summarised them here. Basically, they can be divided into two parts: one part pertaining to the nation, and the other part pertaining to the Church. Here they are.
PERTAINING TO THE NATION
1. Expedite the creation of a conducive environment for the establishment of new private universities to cater for the growing number of Nigerian youths seeking tertiary education, and also strengthen the gains of NELFund
2. Protect Nigeria from a one-party state by ensuring a level playing ground for opposition parties.
3. Allow for a free, fair and credible elections in 2027
4. Nigeria is no longer safe: strengthen security
5. The quality of life of the people is deteriorating; the people are suffering severe economic hardship.
PERTAINING TO THE CHURCH
6. Invite Pope Leo XIV on an official visit to Nigeria.
7. Return mission schools taken over by government to their original owners.
8. Emphasise and strengthen the right to freedom of worship for all Christians, especially in the northern states.
Apart from number 6, others are real issues facing Nigerians, and any serious and well-meaning government will take these as honest feedback, but of course, you already know how Tinubu and his people took the message.
