*TOPIC: SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER*

*Memory verse:* "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Saviour. Now, as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything." — *Ephesians 5:21-24, NIV*

*Bible Text:* Ephesians 5:21-31

[21] Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

[22] Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.

[23] For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

[24] Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

[25] Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her

[26] to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,

[27] and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

[28] In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

[29] After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—

[30] for we are members of his body.

[31] “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

William P Harmony once said, “Submission is not about authority and it is not obedience; it is all about relationships of love and respect.”

Harmony in the marriage or relationship thrives on the altar of love, tolerance and submission to each other.

Today, many homes and organisations are suffering from crisis due to lack of submission because of the self-seeking nature of human beings.

Some women find it very difficult to submit to their husbands just like some employees (especially junior staff) find it difficult to submit to their superiors.

The implication of such attitude is an unhealthy and toxic atmosphere at home or workplace.
In today's passage,

Apostle Paul exhorted Christian couples to place submission to one another above other interests for harmony and love to prevail.

Whereas the wives are mandated to submit to their husbands, they (husbands) are also mandated to show unconditional love to their wives.

Besides, Paul’s condition for requiring submission and love is predicated on the reverence of the Church for Christ, which should be a model of love demonstrated by Christian couples.

Submission is a virtue. It is foundational to experiencing peace and joy in the homes, organization and society at large.

Whether you are in a leadership position or not, be humble, selfless, and committed to modelling Christ through your relationships.

*Insight:* The church exists to coach members how to model godliness at home, work or society.

*Prayer:* Lord, help me to model submission and love everywhere and every time.

*TOPIC: GROWING IN DIVINE AND HUMAN FAVOUR*

*Memory verse:* "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man."
— *Luke 2:52, NIV*

*Bible Text:* Luke 2:40-52

[40] And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.

[41] Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.

[42] When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.

[43] After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.

[44] Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.

[45] When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.

[46] After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

[47] Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.

[48] When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

[49] “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”

[50] But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

[51] Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.

[52] And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Growth is one of the characteristic features of all living things, including human beings.

It is a process indicating life, enthusiasm and maturity; hence, failure of children to experience growth is painful and portends grave dangers to the parents and the entire family.

Lack of growth manifests in immaturity of actions and can plunge the organisation to crisis.

In today's passage, Jesus Christ is seen experiencing physical and spiritual growth which in resulted in his enjoying divine and human favour.

Jesus grew, not in stature only, but in wisdom and favour with God and man.

At each advancing step, Jesus was envisioning larger measures of that wisdom and moral excellence which, in possibility and germ, were in Him from the first.

All human children too are expected to grow, but the roles of earthly parents in investing in the physical growth of their children cannot be overlooked.

Young Christians are usually likened to and treated as new babes in Christ; they are to feed on the sincere milk of God's word to enhance moral and spiritual growth.

Failure of parents to adhere to dietary rules can hamper the growth and development of children.

However, children too must show enthusiasm, and cooperation to the efforts of the parents to enjoy the sumptuous menu prepared by the parents.

*Insight:* Growth is not automatic; it requires the commitment of parents and the willingness of children.

*Prayer:* O Lord, grant me the needed grace to grow.

*TOPIC: LET THE LITTLE CHILDREN COME*

*Memory verse:* "When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.'" — *Mark 10:14, NIV*

*Bible Text:* Mark 9:33-37; 10:13-16

[33] They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?”

[34] But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.

[35] Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

[36] He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them,

[37] “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

*Mark 10:13-16 NIV*

[13] People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them.

[14] When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

[15] Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

[16] And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.
____________________

In many worship settings today, children are often seen as distractions or less important than adult participants.

Some parents are discouraged from bringing them close to the pulpit or into the main service thinking that they cannot understand spiritual matters.

This attitude mirrors that of the disciples in Jesus' day who meant well but misunderstood God's heart for children.

In today's passage, some parents having little children struggled to reach Jesus for Him lay his hands on their children, but his disciples rebuked them.

They thought that these children were too young to understand and participate in the ongoing worship session; hence, they might constitute nuisance and distraction to meaningful ministerial activities of Jesus. In response,

Jesus condemned the discriminatory tendencies of his disciples, stating that the transparent nature of children should be emulated by anyone who seeks entrance into God's kingdom.

Jesus not only corrected the over-zealousness of his disciples in preventing parents with children from gaining access to him, but he also blessed the little children by laying hands on them.

As believers, we must know that children are precious to God and fully included in His kingdom.

Their simplicity, and openness are qualities we must imitate in our walk with Christ.

Invest in children not only as future leaders, but as current examples of kingdom living.

*Insight:* Children are a vital part of God's kingdom and are worthy of full participation.

*Prayer:* Help me, O Lord, to see people beyond those factors that segregate them.

*TOPIC: OBEDIENCE THAT IS ACCEPTABLE BEFORE GOD*

*Memory verse:* "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." — *Colossians 3:23, NIV.*

*Bible Text:* Colossians 3:20-25

[20] Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

[21] Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

[22] Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.

[23] Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,

[24] since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

[25] Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.
____________________

In workplaces and even within families, it is not uncommon to see people acting obediently only when they are being watched.

This kind of behaviour rooted in eye service and pretence, often leads to distrust, conflict, and missed blessings.

Genuine obedience, however, reflects true character and honour both man and God.

Today's text teaches that obedience acceptable to God begins with children obeying their parents and extends to all relationships, including work and authority.

It must be sincere and rooted in reverence for God. Those in authority are not excluded, they are to act fairly to people beneath them.

True obedience is wholehearted and aimed at pleasing God. God promises reward for faithful obedience and justice for wrongdoing.

As a child of God, let your obedience flow from a sincere desire to please God. Avoid eye service or doing things only for people's approval.

God sees the heart and rewards it accordingly. In everything you do, do it as unto the Lord.

Whether you are an employee or a boss, be conscious of the fact that you are serving the Lord Jesus Christ.

He is the one who will judge and reward you. Let every task be an act of worship, knowing that you serve a just and faithful Master.

*Insight:* God rewards all actions and behaviours without bias or favouritism.

*Prayer:* Lord, help me to be transparently honest in all my ways and deeds.

*TOPIC: DO NOT DESPISE THE LITTLE ONES*

*Memory verse:* "See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven." — *Matthew 18:10, NIV*

*Bible Text:* Matthew 18:7-14

Matthew 18:7 Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

18:10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

18:11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

18:12 How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?

18:13 And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.

18:14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.

Our world is filled with injustices; people take advantage of each other at personal, organisational, national or international levels: the weak versus the strong and the poor versus the rich.

Children in particular are often dismissed as insignificant, especially during decision making or leadership settings.

However, we must remember that no one is entirely independent; all humans are interrelated and interdependent.

Therefore, when we honour and uplift even the least among us, including children, we promote peace, dignity, and harmony in the world.

Today's scripture explains the profound mystery of divine assistance available for little children as creatures of God.

Though physically helpless, they have God as their source of strength and support, making it imperative that no one should attempt to cheat or despise them.

In the same way, the meek are blessed because they have God to defend them.

No matter how brilliant, skilful, good looking, dark or fair, all humans are wonderfully and fearfully made.

As creatures of God, we are prone to one weakness or another; frailty of different kinds distinguishes us from the divine.

Little wonder that Jesus cautions his disciples against abusing other persons based on their physical or psychological defects, because that would indirectly be an abuse against God.

As such, no one should despise another because we all exist to complement one another.

*Insight:* Recognise the worth and value of others, irrespective of gender, colour, or race.

*TOPIC: A HERITAGE FROM THE LORD*

*Memory Verse:* "Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior, children born in one's youth are like arrows. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court." *Psalms 127:3-5, NIV*

*Bible Text:* Psalm 127

Psalms 127:1-5 NIV
[1] Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.

[2] In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.

[3] Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.

[4] Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth.

[5] Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.

One of Mother Teresa's quotes says, "The child is the beauty of God present in the world, that greatest gift to a family." Like most cultures, ancient Israel placed a high premium and value on childbearing; hence, childlessness is often considered a punishment resulting from divine wrath. All reasonable adults desire an enduring legacy through well-brought-up children, without which the hope of a greater future for the generation is dim.

Today's passage reveals the Jewish beliefs and theology that success in life is tied to divine support and grace, without which all human efforts are futile. The assertions in this passage cannot be faulted; it remains the pillar and foundation of the Christian faith that only God blesses human efforts. Therefore, notwithstanding the plans to secure one's accumulated property, heritage, and future, failure to acknowledge God as the supreme ruler and source of support would inevitably spell doom. The passage also reminds us that children are blessings. They are not possessions, but entrusted lives meant to be shaped, guided, and launched into God's plan. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the security guards are awake in vain.

God is the most significant source of all progress and achievement in life. As a believer, let your parenting, efforts, and leadership be guided by prayer, humility, and the Word of God.

Insight: Enduring blessings and legacies come from God.

*TOPIC: SHOW HONOUR, LOVE, AND RIGHTEOUSNESS*

*Memory verse:* "Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honour the emperor." — *1 Peter 2:17, NIV.*

*Bible Text:* 1 Peter 2: 13-17

[13] Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority,

[14] or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.

[15] For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.

[16] Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.

[17] Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.

When David's teacher asked the class to respect the school rules, some kids rolled their eyes.

But David listened, stayed kind to his classmates, and helped others. He wanted to honour his teacher and obey God.

Just like the Bible says, we should respect everyone, love others, and show we belong to God by doing right.

In today's text, Peter reminds believers that although we have been set free in Christ, this freedom is not a license for rebellion or selfish behaviour. Instead, it’s a call to serve God wholeheartedly.

Christians are to honour all people, love fellow believers, fear God, and show respect even to governing authorities.

These instructions reflect a lifestyle of righteousness that glorifies God and distinguishes believers from the world.

It is also a clarion call to all believers in Jesus Christ to be clear-minded and respectful.

Though Christians are not immune to human feelings, they are not to be unduly perturbed or negatively influenced by the socio-economic and political challenges in their countries.

Therefore, they must through their godly behaviours, strive to convince unbelievers that they are truly regenerated and spiritually circumcised at heart.

That way, they shall become models of righteousness and God's agents of peace.

As a believer, let your life reflect respect for authority, sincere love for fellow believers, and reverent fear of God.

*Insight:* Christians must live godly and be good examples to others.

*Prayer:* Lord, help me to be the "light" and the "salt" of the earth in my generation.

*Memory verse:* "...The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: 'When one rules over men in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God, he is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings the grass from the earth.'" *2 Samuel 23:3-4, NIV*

*Bible Text:* 2 Samuel 23:1-7

[1] These are the last words of David: “The inspired utterance of David son of Jesse, the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High, the man anointed by the God of Jacob, the hero of Israel’s songs:

[2] “The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.

[3] The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: ‘When one rules over people in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God,

[5] “If my house were not right with God, surely he would not have made with me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part; surely he would not bring to fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire.

[6] But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns, which are not gathered with the hand.

Leadership is a position of honour, given to those responsible for maintaining law and order in society; hence, much is required from them. To succeed, leaders need Godly wisdom, which is encapsulated in the fear of God.

Unfortunately, several persons accorded such a rare privilege failed to differentiate between leadership and rulership.

Whereas a leader blazes the trail by showing and leading the way for others to follow, a ruler commands the follower to carry out an assignment without giving a helping hand.

Indeed, the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
Today’s passage for meditation is part of David’s last words as the king of ancient Israel.

He reasoned sensibly on the benefits of leading men with the fear of God in one’s heart; one becomes a beacon of light for those in the dark and a ray of hope for the wearied hearts.

It is little wonder that David’s legacy endured for several generations, unlike most selfish leaders in contemporary society. Godly leadership is truly challenging, but the rewards far outweigh the pains.

Has the responsibility to lead been committed to your hands? Then, rule with the fear of God. Be an exemplary leader wherever you find yourself.

Let your decisions reflect righteousness and compassion, not personal ambition or pride. Seek God's wisdom and remember that you will give an account.

*Insight:* A good leader seeks the good and welfare of everyone.

*Bible Text:* Hebrews 13:16-20

[16] And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

One pervasive issue in the political landscape, particularly in parts of Africa, is the alarming level of irresponsibility displayed by some leaders.

Once in office, many rely heavily on their immunity, acting as though they are beyond accountability.

However, this mindset is not limited to politics; even in the church, some leaders fail to live with the awareness that they will give an account of their leadership before God.

As the writer of Hebrews wraps up his message, he emphasizes the social responsibilities of believers, beginning with acts of kindness and generosity toward those in need.

Leaders, specifically, are tasked with watching over the souls of their followers, keeping in mind that they are ultimately accountable to God.

If followers frustrate them, leaders must respond to God, rather than reacting negatively to the followers.

Nevertheless, while leaders have significant responsibilities, followers also play a crucial role in making leadership fulfilling rather than burdensome.

They must ensure they are obedient to their leaders, encourage them, and be urged to pray for them.
What kind of leader are you? Are you a responsible follower?

Do not let the temporary fame that accompanies a position of authority blind you to your accountability before God.

He demands faithfulness from all who belong to Him, and you must strive to meet that expectation.

*Insight:* It is required of a steward that he be found faithful.

*TOPIC: OUR ULTIMATE ALLEGIANCE IS TO GOD*

*Memory verse:* "Peter and the other apostles replied: 'We must obey God rather than human beings!'"
— *Acts 5:29, NIV*

*Bible Text:* Acts 5:26-32

[26] At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them.

[27] The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest.

[28] “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”

[29] Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!

[30] The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross.

[31] God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins.

[32] We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” __________________

Jethro, a professed child of God, was recently implicated in unethical activities at his workplace.

When confronted by the investigative panel, he claimed he was merely following the instructions of his immediate superior.

This incident stands in stark contrast to the example set by the apostles in today's Bible passage.

The apostles faced punishment and imprisonment because they refused to obey human authorities at the expense of their obedience to God.

In our world, we are constantly faced with decisions, and these choices determine our ultimate destiny.

When it comes to allegiance, the following points are crucial:
Declare boldly whom you belong to.

The apostles did not hesitate to make it known that they were disciples of Jesus.

Proclaim the truth of God's word without fear. As reflected in our focus passage, the apostles were unafraid to teach the truth.

Stand against any human authority that contradicts God's will.

Peter boldly stated that they could not seek to please man by offending God.

Today, many children of God remain silent in the face of wrongdoing, either out of fear of persecution or reluctance to give up the comforts that come from staying quiet.

In a world filled with sycophancy, may you receive the grace to boldly declare your allegiance to God, regardless of the consequences.

*Insight:* You cannot afford to be inconsistent in your allegiance to God.

*Prayer:* Father, help me to be truthfully committed to Your course here on earth.
