*THE SIGNIFICANCE OF GOOD FRIDAY*
Whatâs so good about Good Friday?
Why do we call Good Friday âgood,â when it is such a dark and bleak event commemorating a day of suffering and death for Jesus?
Good Friday, the Friday before Easter, is the Christian day to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and His death at Calvary. This Christian holiday is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Great and Holy Friday, and Black Friday.
For Christians, Good Friday is an important day of the year because it celebrates what we believe to be the most momentous weekend in the history of the world. Ever since Jesus died and was raised, Christians have proclaimed the cross and resurrection of Jesus to be the decisive turning point for all creation. Paul considered it âof first importanceâ that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and was raised to life on the third day, following what God had promised in the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3).
"For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance; that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)
On Good Friday, we remember the day Jesus willingly suffered and died by crucifixion as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins (1 John 1:10). Easter follows it, the glorious celebration of the day Jesus was raised from the dead, heralding his victory over sin and death and pointing ahead to a future resurrection for all who are united to him by faith (Romans 6:5).
Why Is it called 'Good' Friday?
Still, why call the day of Jesusâ death âGood Fridayâ instead of âBad Fridayâ or something similar? Some Christian traditions do take this approach: in German, for example, the day is called Karfreitag, or âSorrowful Friday.â In English, the origin of the term âGoodâ is debated: some believe it developed from an older name, âGodâs Friday.â Regardless of the origin, the name Good Friday is entirely appropriate because the suffering and death of Jesus, as terrible as it was, marked the dramatic culmination of Godâs plan to save his people from their sins.
For the gospel's good news to have meaning for us, we first have to understand the bad news of our condition as sinful people under condemnation. The good news of deliverance only makes sense once we see how we are enslaved. Another way of saying this is that it is essential to understand and distinguish between law and gospel in Scripture. We need the law first to show us how hopeless our condition is; then, the gospel of Jesusâ grace brings us relief and salvation.
In the same way, Good Friday is âgoodâ because as terrible as that day was, it had to happen for us to receive the joy of Easter. The wrath of God against sin had to be poured out on Jesus, the perfect sacrificial substitute, for forgiveness and salvation to be poured out to the nations. Without that awful day of suffering, sorrow, and shed blood at the cross, God could not be both âjust and the justifierâ of those who trust in Jesus (Romans 3:26). Paradoxically, the day that seemed to be the greatest triumph of evil was actually the death blow in Godâs gloriously good plan to redeem the world from bo***ge.
The cross is where we see the convergence of great suffering and Godâs forgiveness. Psalms 85:10 sings of a day when ârighteousness and peaceâ will âkiss each other.â The cross of Jesus is where that occurred, where Godâs demands, his righteousness, coincided with his mercy. We receive divine forgiveness, mercy, and peace because Jesus willingly took our divine punishment, the result of Godâs righteousness against sin. âFor the joy set before himâ (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus endured the cross on Good Friday, knowing it led to his resurrection, our salvation, and the beginning of Godâs reign of righteousness and peace.
Good Friday marked the day when wrath and mercy met at the cross. Thatâs why Good Friday is so dark and so Good.
This year, Good Friday will be on April 7th, 2023. Good Friday is always the Friday before Easter.
Good Friday in the Bible:
The Crucifixion of Jesus - As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. They came to a place called Golgotha (which means âthe place of the skullâ). There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. And sitting down, they kept watch over him there.
Above his head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, âYou who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!â
In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. âHe saved others,â they said, âbut he canât save himself! Heâs the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, âI am the Son of God.â â In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him. (Matthew 27:32-44)
The Death of Jesus - From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, âEli, Eli, lemasabachthani?â (which means âMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me?â). When some of those standing there heard this, they said, âHeâs calling Elijah.â
Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. The rest said, âNow leave him alone. Letâs see if Elijah comes to save him.â And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
At that moment, the temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesusâ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, âSurely he was the Son of God!â Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedeeâs sons. (Matthew 27:45-56)

Romans 5:6-10 - "You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from Godâs wrath through him! For if, while we were Godâs enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!"
1 Peter 2:24 - âHe himself bore our sinsâ in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; âby his wounds you have been healed.â
Isaiah 53:3-5 - "He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."
John 3:16-17 - "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him."
Mark 9:31 - "For he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, âThe Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.â
