MY WAKING THOUGHT
Focus: GOD’S RESTRAINING POWER
Anchor Scripture: 1 Samuel 12:9-12
[9] Why, then, have you despised the word of the Lord and done this horrible deed? For you have murdered Uriah the Hittite with the sword of the Ammonites and stolen his wife. [10] From this time on, your family will live by the sword because you have despised me by taking Uriah’s wife to be your own. [11] “This is what the Lord says: Because of what you have done, I will cause your own household to rebel against you. I will give your wives to another man before your very eyes, and he will go to bed with them in public view. [12] You did it secretly, but I will make this happen to you openly in the sight of all Israel.”
The calamities which God said would begin to befall David and his household had always been lurking around them. It was only God's restraining power that kept those calamities away from him and his household.
God's restraining power is His sovereign, merciful intervention that limits evil, chaos, and the influence of Satan around an individual, in a family, community, and in the world at large.
Unfortunately, when David sinned against God, the hedge was broken. God removed His restraining power, though in part, not wholly. The events that then followed were quite dreadful:
Suddenly, Amnon, David’s eldest son, started lusting after his own step-sister, Tamar. An evil friend quickly counselled him on what to do. Without thinking it over, he executed that evil, and r***d his own step-sister. Afterwards, he discovered it was all vanity; he despised the very step-sister he once lusted after and even r***d (2 Sam 13:1-19).
Absalom, another son of David and the elder brother of the Tamar, took his time to plot his revenge. When the opportunity presented itself, he killed his step-brother, Amnon. Then he ran away (2 Sam 13:20-38).
After he was forgiven and restored by David, Absalom set his eye on overthrowing his father, David. He crafted the coup d’etat so flawlessly that when it was set on motion, David had to run for his dear life, accompanied by his fighting men and some loyal friends (2 Sam 15:1-23).
While on that, Ahithophel, a wise man, whom David previously relied on his counsel, joined Absolom in rebellious. Ahithophel counselled Absalom to publicly humiliate his father, David, by sleeping with his father's concubines on the roof top, where all Israel could see the evil act. Without hesitation, Absalom executed that evil against his father (2 Sam 16:20-23).
Note that all these evil propensities had always been there, lurking around. It was God's restraining power that kept them under check. But when David broke the hedge, God removed that restraint in part. This was probably done to teach David that he wasn't untouchable; he wasn’t immune to evil. Rather, it was only God's restraining power that kept evil away from him and his household.
Absalom's plot to overthrow and subsequently kill his father, David, was aborted just because God's restraining power was not removed completely but in part. Because before the calamities started coming, God had told him through Prophet Nathan, “…thou shalt not die” (2 Sam 12:13, KJV).
Friends, it's important that we walk with God uprightly. As the Bible says, “The dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty” (Psalm 74:20, KJV). In some cases, those dark places are not necessarily geographical locations; they're in the hearts of humans.
And here’s how the Bible describes the heart this way: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer 17:9).
Indeed, none of us can fathom the depth of evil the heart of man could devise and execute, should God remove His restraining power.
To be on the safe side, let’s walk intimately with God. If your life pleases Him, He will not only ensure His power keeps restraining evil from getting near you, He will also move people to do you good. He will literally stir up strangers to do great and unimaginable beautiful things for you. Remember, when a man's way pleases the LORD, He will make even his enemies to be at peace with him (Prov 16:7).
Friends, do not break the hedge. Keep serving God in spirit and truth. As you do, His restraining power will keep working for your good.
Happy Sunday!
