WHAT IS MAY DEVOTION?
HISTORY AND IMPORTANCE
“Some months are ordinary… but May has always belonged to Our Lady.”
Every year, as the month of May begins, something beautiful happens in the Church…
Flowers appear at Marian altars.
The Rosary is prayed more intentionally.
The Blessed Virgin Mary is honored in a special way.
But many still ask:
What exactly is May Devotion?
Where did it come from?
And why is the whole month dedicated to Mary?
1. WHAT IS MAY DEVOTION?
May Devotion is a long-standing Catholic tradition of dedicating the entire month of May to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a time when the faithful are encouraged to honor her more deeply through prayer, reflection, and acts of love.
This devotion is not a sacrament or a strict obligation. Rather, it is a spiritual practice that helps believers grow closer to Christ through His Mother.
2. WHY THE MONTH OF MAY? (HISTORY & TRADITION)
The choice of May is not random. In many cultures, May is associated with spring, new life, and beauty -all symbols that naturally point to Mary.
By the medieval period, Christians had already begun setting aside May as a special time of Marian devotion. This practice grew stronger over the centuries, especially through the influence of religious communities and popular piety.
By the 18th and 19th centuries, the devotion had spread widely across the Church, becoming a cherished tradition among the faithful.
3. HOW IS MAY DEVOTION PRACTICED?
May Devotion is expressed in simple but meaningful ways. Families, parishes, and individuals participate through:
* Daily Rosary
* Marian hymns and prayers
* Personal acts of sacrifice or charity
* Setting up small Marian altars at home
One of the most recognizable expressions is the May Crowning, where a statue of Mary is crowned with flowers as a sign of love and honor.
4. WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS DEVOTION?
May Devotion is not just about honoring Mary -it is about growing in faith.
Through Mary:
* We learn humility
* We learn obedience to God
* We are led more deeply to Christ
As taught in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (cf. CCC 971), devotion to Mary is always oriented toward Christ and flows from true faith.
5. DOES THE CHURCH ENCOURAGE THIS DEVOTION?
Yes. The Church has consistently supported Marian devotion as a powerful aid to spiritual growth, provided it remains Christ-centered.
Documents like Lumen Gentium emphasize Mary’s unique role in salvation history and encourage the faithful to honor her properly.
6. WHY DOES THIS STILL MATTER TODAY?
In a fast-moving world, May Devotion creates a sacred pause.
It reminds us that faith is not only about obligation…
It is also about love, beauty, and relationship.
IN SUMMARY… A MONTH SET APART
May Devotion is:
* A tradition rooted in history
* A practice filled with meaning
* A path that leads to Christ through Mary
Today, reflect:
“Do I only admire Mary… or do I learn from her?”
…and let her lead you closer to her Son
“When you honor Mary, you walk the shortest path to Jesus.”
