TOPIC: AN INVITE TO A DIVINE REFRESHING.

TEXT: Act 3:13-19; Psa 23:4-5.

Apostle Peter invited the crowd after preaching to them about a divine refreshing with a condition attached; To repent and be converted, and to receive forgiveness from their sins. If they fulfilled the two conditions, a time of refreshing will come from the Lord.

In Psa 23:5, David declared, from his personal experience, of this reality that when you make peace with God, He will prepare a spiritual and physical banquet for you. He said, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”

- Let’s picture it this way; any time one is invited to an occasion, a wedding, a birthday party or whatever, there’s naturally an expectation of a time of refreshment. You jokingly ask the person who gives you the invite, “I hope there is ‘Item 7” in the program?

- In the same way, Peter was inviting the Jews to a “New life birthday party.” The invite reads;
* Repent. A change of heart, mind and attitude towards God.
* Be converted. Turn to God and back the world; hand yourself over to God and allow Him to transform you.
* God will blot out your sins. You will receive forgiveness from your sins.
* God will refresh you. You will be strengthened and restored.

- In effect, when you do the first two, God will do the other two things you can’t do for yourself. Phil 2:12-13 says, “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling….For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” In other words, you do your part, and God will do His part.

WHEN DO YOU NEED A REFRESHMENT?
In almost every occasion, a time of refreshment usually comes:
* When the guests are getting bored.
* You will need a refreshment if you have spent a long time working and are tired.
* You need some refreshment when you are depressed or under tension or distressed.
* You need some refreshment when you are hungry or thirsty.

I believe everyone listening to me today needs one form of refreshment or the other.

Job 14:1 says, “Man who is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.” The Lord Jesus confirmed the troubles in the world when He said in Jn 16:33, “In the world you have tribulations,…..but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

- When you believe in Jesus, His victory becomes your victory, and you become an overcomer. (1 Jn 4:4; 5:4).

Items for refreshments include;
* Food and drinks; for physical strengthening.
* Relaxation. It brings mental and psychological healing to oneself.
* Fellowship. You meet friends and interact with others for spiritual and psychological/mental healing.
* Decision/ Choice. You decide whether to be a part of the time for refreshments or not. You may decide not to accept the invitation, and if you decide to go, you are free to choose among the things provided. (Deut 11:26-28). God allows you to choose, He doesn’t force you to choose Him.

Every believer needs a daily spiritual refreshment from the Lord. Isa 40:31 tells us how to receive the spiritual vitality and strength for a victorious Christian living.

Are you experiencing a spiritual, physical, mental or an emotional distress? The Lord is inviting you to a season of refreshing; to surrender those things that are weighing you down to Him. (Matt 11:28-30). We desperately need a time of refreshing in this country, Nigeria, as many people are confused, suffering from hardship because of the economic melt down. The good news is that if God is with you and for you, He will prepare a table before in the midst of spiritual, physical and economic enemies. Psa 34:19 says that the Lord will satisfy the righteous in times of famine or adversity.

Invite Him into your situation and your season of refreshments will come.

WHY ARE MANY PEOPLE NOT REFRESHED IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD?
* They are not hungry or thirsty for the Lord. The sons of Korah said in Psa 42:1, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.”
* They don’t take quality decision to make right choices. (Heb 11:6). You can’t relate or connect to God without a heart faith that God rewards those who believe and seek Him with all their hearts. Many born again Christians only have a mental assent to the word, and not a heart faith. (Mk 11:23-24). Faith is a decision to obey God and His word.
* Their delight is not in the Lord. (Psa 37:4). They place their love in other things above their love for God. A time of refreshing will come from the Lord, if you trust and put your love upon Him above every thing else.
* They are distracted by the world, and the things in the world. (1 Jn 2:15-16; 1 Pet 5:7). Deal with every distraction and focus on your divine assignment, and you will enter into your season of refreshing from the Lord today.

Prayer: O Lord, I am thirsty and hungry for You. By faith, I enter into my season of refreshment now, in the name of Jesus.

TOPIC: QUENCHERS OF REVIVAL FIRE.

TEXT: Acts 5:1-12.

In Acts 4:36-37 Joses, sold his piece of land and brought the money to the church. His generosity made the Apostles to name him Barnabas; “Son of encouragement”.

- Acts 5:1 begins with; “But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife…..”. The “But” implies that they acted differently, and contrary to the move of the Holy Spirit in the church. Instead of bringing the whole money to the church, as Barnabas did, Ananias and his wife decided to keep for themselves a part of the money from the land they sold.

- They decided to tell Peter a lie because of their selfishness, self-seeking and the love of money. Peter’s response to the actions shows that no one was asked or compelled to sell his property in other to feed the poor, they did it willingly and voluntarily.

- Ananias and Sapphira allowed satan to fill their minds with deceit to quench the revival fire that was burning in the church that was growing rapidly.

- However, Apostle Peter operated the gift of discerning of spirits and detected their deception.
* The gift of discerning of spirits usually operates when your spirit becomes uncomfortable with what someone is saying or when he acts with wrong or hidden motives.

Peter asked Ananias, “ Why has satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit…...?”
God, and not Peter, killed Ananias for allowing satan to use him as his instrument of quenching the revival fire in the church.

- 3 hours later, the wife, Sapphira came in, and Peter asked her to tell him the truth, but she also lied to the Holy Spirit, and died.

God killed the couple to prevent the negative spirits from contaminating the whole church.
* The Bible says, “A little leaven leavens the whole lump”. (Gal 5:9). If God didn’t kill Ananias and his wife, the spirit of deceit, lies, jealousy, selfishness and greed would have entered in and contaminated the whole body of Christ in the early church.
* The revival fire that was burning in the hearts of others would have been quenched.
* By their death, all the brethren, even those who were not born again, reverence God. A reverential fear that brought a greater obedience, commitment and dedication to God by the believers.
* After their elimination, according to Vs 12-15, special signs and wonders began to take place among the Apostles.

LIFE APPLICATION.
Whenever God begins a new thing, satan will immediately go into action to counter it as an adversary. (1 Pet 5:8).

In Matthew 6:24, the Lord said that no man can serve two masters; that
“You cannot serve God and mammon.” In other words, money can become someone’s master, it can influence him to the extent of placing more value on it than on God.

This means that, if you put so much attachment to your possessions, they will influence your actions and behaviours, and that will affect your intimate relationship with God. It is a warning against the love of money, because when you love money, you won’t love God to the extent of serving Him with your money.

- Martin Luther said, “You need conversion in three areas;
* Your heart - your spirit must be born again.
* Your mind - referring to your soul which must be renewed by the word of God.
* Your wallet - referring to your money, your wealth.

It means that you must serve God with your money as a sign of your complete devotion and dedication to Him.

Rev Dr Uma Ukpai used also to say, “Until your pocket is born again, your born again experience is not yet complete.”

- Ananias and Sapphira were born again, but their minds were not renewed and their wealth was not converted because they refused to give back to God when the need arose.
* Why has satan filled your mind? Indicates that a believer who is filled with the Holy Spirit can be demonized; he can be oppressed, harassed, tormented, and obsessed by evil thoughts, if he gives the devil a room in his life (Ephesians 4:27).

Apostle Paul, in 2 Cor 9:7 says “God loves a cheerful giver,” and in 2 Thess 3:2, He said, “Not all have faith.”
In other words, every believer is expected to give willingly and joyfully for the work of God and to help others in need.
* Giving to God is not what you do out of compulsion; it is what you choose to do, not because of people, but because of your love for Him.
* Don’t give beyond your faith level, or because others are giving; give because you are convinced that it is the right thing to do.
* Christianity is not like a competitive economy where every producer of goods tries to outsmart the others. Everything we do in the kingdom of God must be done, “In the name of the Lord,” and from our hearts because of our love for God (Col 3:17).

- Don’t give anything to God because you are compelled by someone, otherwise, you won’t get any reward.

- You will quench the fire of revival if:
* You become envious and jealous of others.
* You will quench the fire of revival if you act contrary to the spiritual atmosphere prevalent in the church.
* You quench the fire of revival if you hold back what you are supposed to give because of greed or selfishness.
* You will quench the fire of revival if you become critical of those who are liberal, or discourage them by your actions.

Remember, what you are critical of, you cannot attract to your life.

PRAYER
I refuse to be a quencher of revival, but an instrument to rekindle it, in the name of Jesus.

TOPIC: THE PRAYER FOR BOLDNESS.

TEXT: Acts 3:1-8; 4:1-3, 13-18, 23, 29-31.

There are three dimensions of the Holy Spirit operation in a believer’s life, and they are;
* The regeneration stage. When the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in him at new birth. (Jn 3:5; 20:22; Titus 3:5; 1Cor 12:13).
* The fruit bearing stage. When he receives the Holy Spirit baptism. (Lk 3:21-22; Acts 1:8; 2:1-4).
* The miraculous stage. As he responds to the leading of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit will begin to use him the more, and there will be greater manifestations of the gifts of the Spirit with signs and wonders following. (Lk 4:18-19; Acts 3:1-9; 4:29-31; 5:12-15; 19:11-12).

The prayer for boldness ushered the early believers into the third dimension of the Holy Spirit’s operation. After that prayer, the Holy Spirit anointed them for greater miracles, signs and wonders.

The religious leaders had said, in Vs 16, “What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.”

They wanted more signs and wonders to continue to take place, so they prayed for courage to keep teaching and speaking the word in the name of Jesus as a proof that Jesus was alive.

- When Peter and John left the council, they went to their fellowship believers and reported the threats not to teach or speak again in the name of Jesus to them. They collectively and corporately took the matter to God in prayers.

- They had received the boldness to witness when they received the Holy Spirit baptism on the day of (vs13). Their payer was for a greater grace to confront the religious leaders who had threatened them and for any other future oppositions that might arise.
* You need boldness to preach the word of God, especially, in a hostile environment.

The contents of their prayer requests were threefold;
1. Now, Lord, look on their threats. God already knew about the threats, but they had to remind Him as a mark of their dedication and submission to His will.
2. Grant your servants boldness to speak your word. They prayed for the courage to keep speaking the word of God fearlessly no matter the risks or the negative outcome of it.
3. Stretch out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the Name of Jesus. They knew the kingdom of God must be proclaimed, not just by speaking, but in the demonstration of power. (1Cor 4:20).

The outcome of their prayers:
* The building they were gathered in, was shaken. This signified God’s presence and a proof that their prayer had been answered.
* They were filled with the Holy Spirit. This points to a constant filling for every day challenge. (Eph 5:18).
* They spoke the word of God with boldness.
Vs 32-35 indicates that the Holy Spirit caused the love of God to be poured out in their hearts, leading to an organised welfare program that brought an increase of membership in the church. (Rm 5:5).

CONCLUSION
- Apostle Peter, on the day of Pentecost, testified that the Holy Spirit baptism was in fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy. He used it as an occasion to testify that Jesus Christ rose from the dead; that the religious leaders ignorantly handed Him over to be crucified, but that happened because it was according to the predetermined counsel of God.

- In chapter 3, the man healed was born crippled, and the Jews believed that only the Messiah could heal anyone born crippled or blind. Knowing that Peter and John were ordinary men, the healing attracted a multitude, including some of the religious leaders. Peter boldly declared to them in Acts 3:12,13,16; “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?…the God of our fathers, glorified His Servant Jesus….. And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.”

- In chapter 4, before the council of the religious leaders, he proclaimed that if Jesus did not resurrect, then the miracle would not have happened. The council of elders admitted in Vs 16 that a notable miracle had happened which could not be denied. They were tormented by the feelings of guilt for killing an innocent man. Therefore, they knew that the only way to escape from such torment was to stop the disciples from mentioning the name of Jesus in public. This was because more miracles would continue to take place in Jesus’ Name.
* Miracles, signs, wonders and healings are proofs that Jesus Christ is alive today.

- Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
* The early believers made the kingdom of God and His righteousness their number one priority, and were determined to fulfill their mission.
* They were willing and ready to die instead of ceasing to talk about Jesus and His resurrection.

- God responded to their devotion, and filled them again and again with the power of the Holy Spirit for greater miracles. God not only empowered them spiritually, He supplied all their material and physical needs. There was an outbreak of revival leading to a spiritual growth and maturity. They began to walk in love so that no one lacked anything among them.
* When we seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness first, He will always take care of us and ensure that we always have all we need.
* Never allow the enemy’s threats move you, discourage you, or stop you from remaining faithful to your calling, in Jesus name.

Pray that the Lord will take you to the 3rd dimension of the Holy Spirit, the miraculous stage, in the name of Jesus.

TOPIC: HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM.

TEXT: Acts 2:1-14, 38-39.

On the day of Pentecost, while they were praising God and praying, waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit in the upper room in Jerusalem, the Holy Spirit came upon the 120 of the believers who were gathered there.

Our text recorded that;
* They heard a sound from heaven.
* A rushing mighty wind entered into the room.
* They saw cloven tongues of fire which sat upon each of them.
* They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak with other tongues.

The sound, the wind, the fire and the divided tongues; all were to announce the arrival of the Holy Spirit. They were expecting the power from on high to come upon them, and God chose to send the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.

* The cloven tongues of fire that sat upon each of them shows that the Holy Spirit baptism is an individual experience.

* The speaking with other tongues means that they spoke in languages they had not spoken before (Vs 7-12).

* Speaking in other tongues is the evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. You must speak in a different language you haven’t spoken before when you receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:44-46; 19:6).

* The Holy Spirit baptism is not the Spirit of God coming to dwell in you the day you become born again (Jn 20:22; 2Cor 1:22; Eph 1:13-14).

* The Holy Spirit baptism is the Spirit of God coming upon you, to empower you to do the works that the Lord Jesus did, and has commissioned us to do in His name.

* Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, but He needed to be baptized in the Holy Spirit to do the works of His Father (Lk 1:30; 3:21-22). The Bible says, “When all the people were baptised, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptised; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, ‘You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.’

* The Holy Spirit baptism is the immersion in the energizing power of God for fruit bearing and miraculous living.

* It is the main gate to the realm of the miraculous.

* The Holy Spirit baptism is for every believer in Christ Jesus, and it is available for anyone who seeks to be baptised (Vs 38-39).

* The unbelievers cannot receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit because they have not received Christ (Jn 14:17).

* You can receive the Holy Spirit baptism the same day you become born again without water baptism (Acts 10:44-46).

* Without the Holy Spirit baptism, you can’t pray in the supernatural language to build your faith (1Cor 14:15,18; Jude 1:20).

You can receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit anywhere you are, in the church or outside the church, if you are hungry and long
to be baptised Lk 11:13. Every believer needs the baptism in the Holy Spirit as Christ and as the believers in the Acts of the Apostles, to effectively carry out the Great Commission.

TOPIC: WALK IN THE SPIRIT.

TEXT: Gal 5:16-21; Jn 1:7-10.

According to 1Thess 5:23, man is a tripartite being; he has a spirit, soul and body. Your human spirit is the one born again, and it is where the spirit of God lives. Your soul and body must be subject to the Holy Spirit living inside and to the word of God to be saved. (Jas1:21; Rm 12:1-2). This is the reason why believers should walk in the spirit; “And you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

What is the flesh?
* The Lust of the flesh in the Bible is used to describe the intense desires arising from our fallen human nature.
* It is the gratification of the physical or emotional desires over the will of God.
* It emanates from the carnal mind which is not born again.
* It is the flesh that leads to the temptations that opposes your spiritual life.
* It is a part of the world system. (1Jn 2:15-16)
1Jn 1:7-9, when you are walking in the Spirit, you are walking in the light, and the result is that the blood of Jesus will cleanse your carnal mind daily from the plague of sin consciousness.
* To walk in the light is to be guided by the word of God in everything you do.
* To walk in the the Spirit is to depend and rely upon the Holy Spirit as your helper, and not to depend on your own abilities to please God.
Vs 8 implies that our human sin nature, the flesh, is always at war with the spirit of God who lives in us.

As long as we are still living in this world in our human flesh, the battle in the mind goes on. In other words, no matter your level of anointing, you can still be tempted to sin. Therefore, you must guard your heart with all diligence (Pro 4:23; Rm 12:1-2).

Rm 8:7-8 says, “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”
* You cannot walk in the spirit and in the flesh at the same time; they are mutually exclusive.

- The scriptures clearly indicates that your flesh is at war with your spiritual nature, but it is the one you yield yourself to that determines the one in control of your life. In Rm 7:15, Apostle Paul confirms the struggles within the minds of both believers and the unbelievers when he said, “For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.” Vs 17 says, “But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.”

- Living for God is what you choose, and not what the Holy Spirit forces you to do. To live a successful Christian life, you must strive to walk in the Spirit so that you won’t satisfy the cravings of your flesh.

To walk in the Spirit: (Rm 6:11-14).
* Consider yourself as dead to sin.
* Don’t allow sin to rule your life.
* Don’t obey the lust of the flesh.
* Don’t present yourself as an instrument of unrighteousness. Then, sin shall not have dominion over you since you have seen yourself as dead to sin, because a dead man doesn’t respond to the external stimulus.

Finally;
* Do not quench the Spirit.
* Do not despise prophesies.
* Test all things.
* Hold fast what is good.
* Abstain from all appearances of evil (1 Thess 5:19-22).

When you respond to the above instructions, walking in the Spirit will become as normal as your physical daily walk. Walking in the spirit in a whole life process, and you can do that step by step.(Gal 5:25).
