The Purification Of The Senses
Holiness is a necessary feature of any person or Christian who wants to be saved. But if we are going to be holy our holiness has to start with the custody of our senses. This is because if Satan is going to capture the soul of a giant lover he has to come through the senses. Thus, if the soul is going to be holy. we have to defend it from the influences of the senses because once the senses are corrupt the soul will be corrupt. The human person has three nature and each nature has three powers which is called faculties that helps them to carry out their functions. The three natures of man are the soul, the body and the spirit. The spirit which is the immaterial facet of a human person which gives us a consciousness of life and other remarkable God like qualities. Therefore, the spirit has the power of Transcendency, the power of communion and the power of vision. The soul is the part of a person which is not physical. It is central to the personhood of a human being. The soul has the power of memory, the power of intellect and the power of grace. While our physical body has the sensual power, the appetitive power and organic power.Sensual power are the senses like sight, smell, feeling, hearing and taste. They are given to us in order to do what God has ordained for us to do on earth. Appetitive power is the power of appetite that makes us to desire what is desirable or wrong while the organic power is the power of different systems in our body such as respiratory system, digestive system etc.The five senses are the windows through which the soul is either purified or corrupted when you get distracted in prayer it is usually as a result of what you have seen or heard previously which is stored in your memory being replayed to you. Purification of the senses is necessary because without it the soul will be corrupted by the senses. Mortification of the senses and prayer is the main way by which we can purify the senses in order to restore sanity to the soul.
