A Brief History of the Foundation of the Sisters of Jesus the Saviour (SJS)

The Congregation of the Sisters of Jesus the Saviour (SJS) is a religious institute of consecrated life in the Catholic Church, founded in 1985 in Elele, Rivers State, Nigeria, by the Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Emmanuel Matthew Paul Edeh, C.S.Sp. The foundation of the Congregation was born out of a deep spiritual insight and apostolic zeal, inspired by the Holy Spirit, in response to the pressing pastoral and human needs of the time.

The origin of the Institute is intimately connected with the Founder’s profound encounter with Christ in the mystery of His salvific love, particularly as revealed in the suffering, the sick, and the abandoned. Through his ministry, especially among the mentally challenged and marginalized, Fr. Edeh discerned a specific call within the Church to establish a community of consecrated women who would embody and continue the healing and saving mission of Jesus Christ.

Guided by ecclesiastical authority and in fidelity to the Magisterium of the Church, the Congregation was established as a diocesan institute, with its motherhouse in Elele. From its inception, the Sisters embraced the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, committing themselves to a life of total consecration to God and generous service to humanity.

The charism of the Congregation is centered on making Jesus the Saviour present in the world through compassionate and holistic care, especially for the sick, the aged, the handicapped, and the abandoned. This mission reflects the mandate of Christ “to bring good news to the poor… to heal the broken-hearted” (cf. Luke 4:18), and is carried out through apostolates in healthcare, education, pastoral ministry, and social services.

At the heart of the spirituality of the Sisters is a profound Eucharistic devotion, with particular emphasis on the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, which serves as the source and summit of their life and mission. Rooted in prayer, nourished by the Word of God, and sustained by fraternal community life, the Sisters strive to be authentic witnesses of Christ’s redeeming love in the Church and in the world.

Following its canonical er****on and subsequent ecclesiastical recognition, the Congregation has experienced steady growth, extending its presence beyond Nigeria to various parts of the world, including the American and European regions. This expansion stands as a sign of the vitality of its founding charism and the enduring relevance of its mission in the life of the Church.

Today, the Sisters of Jesus the Saviour continue to live in fidelity to their founding vision, participating actively in the evangelizing mission of the Church. Their history remains a testimony to God’s providence and a living invitation to women discerning a vocation to consecrated life, to follow Christ more closely and to serve humanity in love.
