BIG BROTHER NAIJA: A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE

By Rev. Fr. Augustine Chukwuebuka Nnadi.

(I wrote this article in 2017 after watching my first and last Big brother edition, when the episode had a little bit of sanity and morals to showcase)

In spite of my tight schedule as a priest and teacher, I was able to follow the just concluded Big Brother NAIJA from the daily analysis given by DSTV through the African Magic Showcase channel. From a personal point of view, I learnt a lot from it except for those aspects which tend to project immorality in the minds of the youth. I am totally against such ungodly actions. Again, the spirituality of those that participated in the show was underplayed. There was nothing like any serious prayer session. Of all the celebrities and people who visted the housemates, no person was invited to attend to their spiritual life. It was as if they went on a spiritual holiday except for few instances when Efe was found praying himself out of eviction. However, there are a lot of spiritual lessons to be derived from the show. It is my own way of using the Big Brother NAIJA to preach the Gospel.

1. Big Brother : He saw and controlled everything happening in the house. He was invisible to the housemates but he communicated with the housemates through his voice. The housemates kept every instruction from the Big Brother without hesitation. No one in the house dared to disobey the Big Brother. He gave the daily tasks to the housemates and rewarded those who distinguished themselves. In general, the Big Brother was in charge of all. He acted behind the scenes.

Spiritual Lesson: The Big Brother is a figure of Jesus Christ who sees and controls everything happening in the world. Jesus is invisible to us but he communicates to us on daily basis through the Word of God in the scriptures. The instructions of Jesus are meant to be obeyed without hesitation. Christians are called to obey and trust Jesus because there is no other way to be happy in Him. Jesus gives daily tasks to Christians and always rewards those who accomplish the tasks. In general, Jesus is the King of the Universe.

2. The Housemates: They were the inhabitants of the house. They came into the house individually from different parts of the country. There in the house, they obeyed the instructions of the Big Brother whom they had not seen. They learnt how to live and work together. At a point, they got attached to one another and expressed their emotions. They lived as one family though each one had the target in mind which was to emerge the winner at the end. The housemates were being judged in accordance with their comportments in the house. Some were voted out on this basis, and got evicted from the house. Though they never met before, the housemates were left in sorrow and tears whenever one of them got evicted. Eviction was inevitable for the housemates. Housemates were evicted on weekly basis. There were great suspense during the evictions, and the housemates were always left with uncertainty. Only Big Brother had the knowledge of the voting results from the viewers. Those who were evicted went out and started watching everything from outside while the show continued. They were admired by people depending on how they lived during their stay in the house.

Spiritual Lesson: Each and every one of us living in the world is like a housemate. We came into the world individually and met ourselves. We become attached to our loved ones, and try to obey God's commandments. We have a target to make heaven. Death is like eviction. When a loved one dies, he or she has been evicted. People shed tears for them while they would be watching the world wherever they are. No one is certain about his or her time of death. People die everyday but no one knows who and who would die at a particular time. The dead continue to exist even when they could not be seen by their loved ones. The dead are remembered and admired depending on their good lives here on earth, and how they imparted on the lives of their beloved ones.

3. The Diary Session: Occasionally, the Big Brother invited the housemates individually into the diary room by announcing it openly. The Diary Session was a very important moment for the housemates because it afforded them the opportunity to interact with the Big Brother one on one, though the Big Brother remained invisible to them. During the sessions, personal matters were discussed as it touched the housemates individually. The housemates on a personal level, made request to Big Brother. The Big Brother consoled, praised, and even reprimanded the housemates during the diary sessions. It was indeed a moment of personal encounter between Big Brother and the housemates.

Spiritual Lesson: Prayer is like a diary session which affords Christians opportunity to interact with Jesus personally. Unlike the Big Brother, Jesus is always inviting us into the diary room which is the innermost part of our heart. It is very important in the life of every Christian. During prayers, we discuss our personal matters with Jesus, feel his love and consolation, which encourage us to forge ahead with life.

4. Ninjas: They were masked men and women who came into the house at any point in time to serve the housemates and deliver messages from the Big Brother. The Ninjas were messengers from the Big Brother. They kept the house in order while the housemates were asleep and helped to set the stage for the daily tasks. Their main job was serving the housemates.

Spiritual Lesson: The angels of God are like the Ninjas who serve us and deliver God's messages to us. They help us in order to accomplish our daily spiritual tasks. The angels are messengers from God who are always at our service. God assigns a guardian angel to each and every one of us.

5. The Target: All the housemates were struggling for one target: N25 Million and an SUV car. Only one person emerged as the winner. It was just like a game. At the end, Efe got the target. However, other housemates gained one thing or the other depending on how they played their games. At least, all of them are now celebrities who have the capacity of engaging in any venture and become successful because people would always support them. The show had brought the housemates to the limelight. Efe was a nobody before he came into the house, but he emerged as a celebrity.

Spiritual Lesson: In 1 Corinthians 9:24-25, Paul stated clearly that just as the runners at the stadium are trying to win an earthly prize, Christians must struggle to win an everlasting prize which is heaven. Thus, heaven is our target. That was the summary of the famous song by Lara George, "Ijoba Orun". Unlike the Big Brother, there is not only one winner and one prize. All those who strive to the end would be winners and would be rewarded accordingly. No matter your background, colour, race, tribe or religion, heaven is our target. We all could make heaven if we live good lives.

6. The voice of the street: Efe , who became the winner of this Big Brother NAIJA, represented the voice of the street. He was an ordinary Warri man without extravagant portfolio. However, he got more fans, whose greater percentage were the ordinary citizens, whom Karl Marx would call the proletariat, the working class or the lower class as against the bourgeois. These are the anarwims of the society. They constitute the larger body of the society. Majority of the votes that made Efe the winner of Big Brother, came from the lower class of the society.

Spiritual Lesson: In Matthew 25:31 -45, Jesus made it clear that the criterion to inherit the Kingdom of God is one's attentiveness to the needs of the poor. In other words, Christians must be the voices of the poor and the oppressed if they are to win the heavenly target. From the beginning of his earthly ministry, Jesus identified himself with the poor. Therefore, we can lose our target if we fail to pay attention to the cries and sufferings of the poor masses. Our society must never neglect the voices of the street.

7. The Rosary: As a Catholic Priest, who is very devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary, I was touched by the way Efe carried his Marian devotion into the Big Brother house. Efe was always seen with his Rosary on his neck. It was not just as a fashion just like most celebrities do, he had a devotion to it. On one occasion, he was up for eviction, he signed himself with the Rosary and with a bible in his hand. As a priest, I was attracted to such gesture, and that moment, Efe became my favourite in the Big Brother. I even went as far as voting for him because I felt he deserved to win. However, the point I am trying to make is that Efe has a strong attachment to his Rosary.

Spiritual Lesson: From my personal experience as a Catholic priest, the Rosary, is a strong weapon of spiritual warfare. I have been able to achieve great things through the power of the Rosary. Saying my Rosary on a daily basis have enabled me to overcome certain temptations and even spiritual attacks. Our Lady told the little children at Fatima, "With the Rosary and the Scapula, I will save the world". All through my life, I have never had an accident, not even a scratch on my car or body. I always say my Rosary once I am travelling, and I have the Rosary suspended on the inner mirror of my car. The power of the Rosary can never be overemphasised. Our Blessed Mother always intercedes for her beloved children.

Conclusion: Based on logistics, I decided to write this article to draw the minds of our youths to the main and ultimate Biggest Brother, our Lord Jesus Christ. Everyone is a fellow housemates. We are advised to listen to the instructions of our Biggest Brother who is always speaking to us through the Word of God. We should not ever lose focus of our heavenly target. Anyone could be evicted at any time. We must always get prepared for eviction. The worst thing that could happen to anyone is to be evicted without being prepared. That is what I call untimely or sudden death. To prepare oneself for eviction is to be in union with God always. Even if anyone that is very dear to us gets evicted at any point in time, life continues. We should never allow such bereavement to make us lose focus of our own target. We shall all see our loved ones in great joy at the end when we would behold our Biggest Brother face to face.

God bless you my beloved people of God.

*ABSOLUTE FAITH IN GOD.*
(19th Sunday of the Ordinary Time, Year C)

Homily by Fr. Augustine Chukwuebuka Nnadi.

*INTRODUCTION*

*Story*
One night, a house caught fire, and a child inside was forced to flee to the roof. His father was outside on the ground floor with his arms outstretched, calling to his son, "Jump! I'll catch you." He knew that to save his son's life, he had to jump down. But his son could only see flames and darkness, and he was afraid to jump from the roof. His father kept shouting, "Jump! I'll catch you." But his son hesitated, "Dad, I can't see you." His father replied, "But I can see you, and that's all that matters." Hearing this, his son jumped without seeing his father, and was saved by his father, who could see him. He jumped because he trusted his father.

Christian faith prepares us to face life and its challenges with courage, not because we are certain, but rather because we are assured of God's presence. Faith doesn't mean we cling to God—it is God who clings to us. And He will never allow us to lose ourselves!
Today is the nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Today's readings invite us to reflect on the need for a lively faith and hope in the things that come into our lives. Faith is the foundation of what is hoped for and the proof of what is unseen. The test of our faith is found in our ability to overcome the trials that come into our lives.

Today's second reading presents us with two examples of people with great faith: Abraham and Sarah. They faced challenges like us, but because of their faith in God, they overcame them.

In today's Gospel (Luke 12:32-48), Jesus’ lesson continues with three short parables on the theme of vigilance. This is important: vigilance, being alert, being vigilant in life. The first is the parable of the servants waiting for their master to return at night. “Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes” (v. 37): it is the beatitude of faithfully awaiting the Lord, of being ready, with an attitude of service. He presents himself each day, knocks at the door of our heart. Those who open it will be blessed, because they will have a great reward: indeed, the Lord will make himself a servant to his servants — it is a beautiful reward — in the great banquet of his Kingdom He himself will serve them. With this parable, set at night, Jesus proposes life as a vigil of diligent expectation, which heralds the bright day of eternity. To be able to enter one must be ready, awake and committed to serving others, from the comforting perspective that, “beyond”, it will no longer be we who serve God, but He himself who will welcome us to his table. If you think about it, this already happens today each time we meet the Lord in prayer, or in serving the poor, and above all in the Eucharist, where he prepares a banquet to nourish us of his Word and of his Body.

The second parable describes the unexpected arrival of the thief. This fact requires vigilance; indeed, Jesus exhorts: “You also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (v. 40).

The disciple is one who awaits the Lord and his Kingdom. The Gospel clarifies this perspective with the third parable: the steward of a house after the master’s departure. In the first scene, the steward faithfully carries out his tasks and receives compensation. In the second scene, the steward abuses his authority, and beats the servants, for which, upon the master’s unexpected return, he will be punished. This scene describes a situation that is also frequent in our time: so much daily injustice, violence and cruelty are born from the idea of behaving as masters of the lives of others. We have only one master who likes to be called not “master” but “Father”. We are all servants, sinners and children: He is the one Father.

*CONCLUSION*
Dear brothers in Christ, as Christians, we are encouraged to develop absolute faith in God. It enables us to hold onto God in all our endeavors as we do everything that is within our capacity. It involves also using the gifts that God has given us to serve Him and our neighbors. We are also reminded that we are going to give an account of our life's service when the Master calls us at the end of our lives. Thus, it calls for wisdom, watchfulness and vigilance. I conclude with these Words from the Letter of St. Paul, the Apostle: "Be vigilant, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong (1 Corinthians 16:13). Happy Sunday to you all.

*BE AN ENCOURAGER*
(Reflection on the Feast on St. Barnabas)
-Fr. Augustine Ebuka Nnadi

Barnabas was one of the most humble and influential figures of the early Church. His original name was Joseph but the apostles gave him the name "Barnabas" which means "son of encouragement". Barnabas lived out this name in action:
-First, he was among the first to sell his land and brought the money to the feet of the apostles encouraging others to do the same (Acts. 4:37). -Second, Barnabas accepted Paul as an apostle after his conversion and did everything he could do to encourage the early Church to accept Paul as a new convert in spite of the fact he was once an enemy of the Christians. This was a source of encouragement to Paul as he was facing the challenges of his new found faith.
-Third, Barnabas encouraged John Mark when he was rejected by Paul for leaving them behind in their first missionary journey. Due to the fact that Barnabas would not give up on John Mark, it caused a certain disagreement between himself and Paul which made them to part ways. Thus, Paul took Silas on his Second missonary journey while Barnabas took John Mark to embark on his own missonary journey. He was always ready to encourage those who had been rejected due to one thing or the other.
From Barnabas, we should learn how to become a people of encouragement. Many people are weighed down with life's burdens; many are rejected due to their previous mistakes; many have grown cold in faith. We can be a Barnabas to the needy people around us by giving out our personal belongings, and putting smiles on the faces of people. Barnabas was truly a son of encouragement who looked for the best in people.

Think for a moment what would have happened if Barnabas had not given Mark a second chance? Would Mark have departed in shame and disappeared from history? Would Mark have been able to join Peter and write the Gospel that now bears his name? Thanks be to God, Barnabas saw great potential in Mark and stuck by him, even when Paul had given up. Barnabas knew that God could work with anyone, given the right combination of desire, openness and opportunity. Like Barnabas, we need to give people a second chance. No one is perfect. Everyone needs the gift of a new beginning.

Is there someone for whom you have given up hope? Has someone so hurt or disappointed you that you have deemed him or her unworthy of a second chance? If so, remember Mark. Give that person a second chance. This does not mean that you should go easy on someone who has done serious harm to you, or that you are to condone sinful behaviour. No. The point I am trying to make is that you should never give up on people no matter what they have done to you. You can react towards a wrong done to you by someone but do not cut that person off entirely from your life. Give that person a second chance at least. Happy Feast of St. Barnabas. May we learn to be encouragers, and never to give up easily on people.

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT.

NINTH DAY (FINAL DAY).

Procedure:
1. Find a quiet time during the day and meditate on this Bible passage: Galatians 5:16-26. Pray Psalms 104 and 51.
2. Sing songs of the Holy Spirit.
3. Add your private petitions.
4. Other prayers:

Thou, on those who evermore Thee confess and Thee Adore, in Thy sevenfold gift, Descend; Give Them Comfort when they die; Give them Life with Thee on high; Give them joys which never end. Amen

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit

The gifts of the Holy Spirit perfect the supernatural virtues by enabling us to practice them with greater docility to divine inspiration. As we grow in the knowledge and love of God under the direction of the Holy Spirit, our service becomes more sincere and generous, the practice of virtue more perfect. Such acts of virtue leave the heart filled with joy and consolation and are known as Fruits of the Holy Spirit. These Fruits in turn render the practice of virtue more attractive and become a powerful incentive for still greater efforts in the service of God, to serve Whom is to reign.

Prayer

Come, O Divine Spirit, fill my heart with Thy heavenly fruits, Thy charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, faith, mildness, and temperance, that I may never weary in the service of God, but by continued faithful submission to Thy inspiration may merit to be united eternally with Thee in the love of the Father and the Son. Amen.

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer myself, soul and body to You, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice, and the might of Your love. You are the Strength and Light of my soul. In You I live and move and am. I desire never to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light, and listen to Your voice, and follow Your gracious inspirations. I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You, by Your compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds, and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore You, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You. Give me grace, O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and the Son to say to You always and everywhere, "Speak Lord for Your servant heareth." Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

O Lord Jesus Christ, Who, before ascending into heaven, did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Your work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me that He may perfect in my soul, the work of Your grace and Your love. Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth, the Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable, and the Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him. Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Your true disciples and animate me in all things with Your Spirit. Amen.

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT.

EIGHTH DAY.

Procedure:
1. Find a quiet time during the day and meditate on this Bible passage: 1Corinthians 2:8-16.
2. Sing songs of the Holy Spirit.
3. Add your private petitions.
4. Other prayers:

Heal our wounds--our strength renews; On our dryness pour Thy dew, Wash the stains of guilt away.
Bend the stubborn heart and will, melt the frozen warm the chill. Guide the steps that go astray!

The Gift of Wisdom

Embodying all the other gifts, as charity embraces all the other virtues, Wisdom is the most perfect of the gifts. Of wisdom it is written "all good things came to me with her, and innumerable riches through her hands." It is the gift of Wisdom that strengthens our faith, fortifies hope, perfects charity, and promotes the practice of virtue in the highest degree. Wisdom enlightens the mind to discern and relish things divine, in the appreciation of which earthly joys lose their savor, whilst the Cross of Christ yields a divine sweetness according to the words of the Saviour: "Take up thy cross and follow me, for my yoke is sweet and my burden light.

Prayer

Come, O Spirit of Wisdom, and reveal to my soul the mysteries of heavenly things, their exceeding greatness, power and beauty. Teach me to love them above and beyond all the passing joys and satisfactions of earth. Help me to attain them and possess them for ever. Amen.
