HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE DIVINE SERVICE

BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 25:14-18
TOPIC: A GOOD STEWARD
Introduction: For a church to run smoothly, there must be good stewards, those that are not cruel, harsh, taskmasters, but those that are kind and considerate leaders, seeking to guide and help members of the body of Christ.
WHO IS A STEWARD?
1. A Steward is a servant in charge of property belonging to the master
2. A steward is an individual who is called to a particular duty, office or employment
3. He/She is a servant in the household of God, that must be obedient and faithful, who must not be lazy or slothful in his/her spiritual assignment
4. He is a co-labourers who must work hand in hand and jointly with the head
5. A steward in summary is a church worker e.g. Ministers, Deacons, Deaconesses, Ushers, etc.
WHY ARE YOU A STEWARD? Any worker who wants to please God, must know why he/she is a worker. Failure to realize the why and how of the task, will definitely lead to apathy, lack of devotion and ineffectiveness. It will also lead to murmuring, complaining and lack of joy in the services. which is low mentality. (2 Chron. 12:1-12)
The following reasons are why you are a steward:
1. It is the will of God (Matt. 4:18-20, Eze. 22:30)
2. You are his branches (Jn. 15:1-8)
3. You have a gift to use (Rom. 12:6-8)
4. Principle of sharing (Luke 24:47-48)
5. Extension arm of pastor's ministry (Eph. 4:11-14, Exo. 18:13-17)
6. Your reward depends on your work (Matt. 25:14-30
QUALITIES OF A STEWARD: In the world today, the nature of every job/work specifies the type of worker/employee to be employed. The duties to be carried out by the workers specify their qualities of qualification and the type of person who can take up the post of a worker.
And so, to be a good steward:
1. You must be born again (Jh 3:1-3, Heb. 12:14)
2. You must live a victorious life above sin (Heb. 12:14)
3. You must be filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8)
4. You must be humble (Phil. 2:1-9, 1 Pet. 5:5)
5. You must not be lover of money
6. You must be committed; committed to prayers, in studying the scripture, to the work of God and to hardwork (2 Chron. 12:1-12)
7. You must be obedience (1 Sam. 15:22)
8. You must be Heavenly minded (Phil. 2:19-21)
9. You must love God (Jn. 21:15)
10. You must manage your home well
DUTIES OF A GOOD STEWARD
1. To support the ministry of the pastor
2. To take good care of both old and new members
3. To assist the pastor' to minister to the needy
4. A good steward serves as church receptionist in every church service/activities
5. They introduce visitors to the church by having them sign a visitors card
6. They help the pastor to makea success by putting the congregation in the right frame
7. They are forerunners of the church, by being the first to arrive at the church and the last to go in the church
THE LITTLE FOXES IN STEWARD
1. Lateness to service
2. Showing displeasures or frustration in service
3. Lack of discipline
4. Lack of uniform dress or good dress, be neat and moderate at all time
5. Unnecessary conversation by the Deacon, Deaconness and Ushers in the church
6. Some stewards does not treat people with respect
7. Some stewards always want other to put things in place for them before and after the service
8. Pride
9. Some steward seat during sermon and others sleep while on duty
CONCLUSION
The church cannot move forward without workers. Stewards are needed for progress, growth and expansion. Stewards are the salt and soil of every living church. Christ knows the importance of this and He set out to appoint, train and equip workers for the work. I urge you today, whatever you do, do it wholeheartedly as unto to the Lord who is the rewarder of all things.
