Security Tips
By Rtd DSP Eno Bassey
Security means being free from danger, risk, and harm - both from yourself and from people around you.
There are many types of security, but today we’ll focus mainly on physical, personal, and cyber security.
Physical & Personal Security
- Avoid moving around alone whenever possible; moving in pairs is safer.
• Always tell trusted people your location and your expected return time.
Be truthful with your information when necessary.
Trust your instincts - if something feels wrong, be careful.
- When using a cab, confirm the driver’s identity and vehicle details.
- Avoid displaying money or valuables publicly.
- While travelling, stay alert. Do not exchange bags or carry items for strangers.
- Keep emergency contacts available in case of danger.
Cyber Security
- Always keep your live location/service location off on social media.
- Secure your social media accounts with strong and unique passwords for different sites.
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) to prevent unauthorized access.
- Think carefully before posting on social media.
- Be careful with photos, fake information, and what you share online.
- Avoid sharing personal information or family details with strangers.
- Beware of hackers and suspicious links.
- Protect your phone from unauthorized access.
- Do not allow your bank account to be used for receiving suspicious or unsafe funds.
- Be mindful of the kind of friends and company you keep.
