Homily by: Rev. Fr Ojong

Theme: Pentecost Sunday

The very first thing to be created was light: “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Gen. 1:3). God showed Himself to Moses in fire through the burning bush (Exod. 3:2). God accompanied the Israelites out of Egypt by a pillar of fire at night (Exod. 13:21).

Anytime you pray to be better than anyone, you have abused the power of speech.

“Let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech” (Gen. 11:7). At that time, the whole world spoke one language (Gen. 11:1).

When the fire came today at Pentecost, the Spirit of God came: “They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them” (Acts 2:3). “After this, I will pour out My Spirit on all people” (Joel 2:28). “I will never again hide My face from them, for I will pour out My Spirit on the people of Israel” (Ezek. 39:29).

Language is generic and common speech. We use language to communicate. Tongue is poetic.

“They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them” (Acts 2:4).

You can be inspired negatively or positively. When you discern the Spirit, you are inspired to do what you do best. You are inspired to do good by the Holy Spirit or to do bad by the evil spirit.

1. Communion (Acts 2:42)
2. Conviction: To convince people of the love of God (John 16:8).
3. Conversion: When you are edified by the Spirit of God, you are converted (2 Cor. 5:17).
4. Evangelism: “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15).

Language should be used for the praise of God and the upliftment of humanity, especially in this era of diverse mass communication (Eph. 4:29).

May the fruits of the Holy Spirit show in our lives, our work, and our families (Gal. 5:22–23), through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Happy Pentecost Sunday 💒📍
