The 2022 International Widows' Day is upon us again and we mark the 23rd of June in remembrance of the many widows who have lost their beloved spouses, and suffer that loss along with the additional burden of dehumanization from traditional practices which rob them of personal dignity, right to inherit their husbands' properties, and subject them to loss of financial inclusion or help.
Goodnews Widows Outreach, in collaboration with Imah Nsa Adegoke Foundation celebrate over 40,000 Widows in the 18 Local Government Areas of Cross River State, Nigeria.
We are committed to *Unwrapping Access to Financial Support for Sustainable Widows' Enterprises* which will ensure financial independence for these women.
To this end, we will be relaunching our SEWiNG [Scheme to Empower Widows in Nigeria] Fund at the 2022 International Widows' Day event which will hold on Thursday at the Slessor Hall, Channelview Hotel, Calabar.
Having successfully run pilot schemes with a cohort of widows in the Ikom LGA where loans of thirty thousand Naira only (N30,000/$50 approx.) were advanced to over thirty widows adopting a system that combined modern Microfinance lending with traditional ‘Osusu’ styled oversight and Guaranteeing, we now will re-launch the Funding Scheme to reach a wider cohort of Widows across the 18 LGAs.
Each cluster of Beneficiaries under the Scheme will range from 100 to 240 widows covering at least one or two LGAs. Total Widows to be reached in the first phase of the Re-launched SEWiNG Fund are 1,960 at N30,000/$50 per Widow.
It is therefore our call that all persons who are interested or persuaded to intervene in the cause of uplifting the fortunes of these widows get involved by contributing to the SEWilNG Fund either directly by adopting a cluster of widows, or send your donations here
