Saying no to a wasteful lifestyle emphasises the importance of living a life of contentment, stewardship, and responsibility. It is sad to know that there are many believers who are quite wasteful, and they do not realise how much they hurt the Lord with this lifestyle. Such people consume more than necessary in everything money, food, material, etc. They spend excessively and live beyond their means. But as believers, we are called to live with wisdom, contentment, and gratitude, recognising that everything we have is a gift from God. A wasteful lifestyle is not only unwise, but it is also unbiblical. God calls us to stewardship, not waste. He created the earth and everything in it, and entrusted them in our care. A wasteful lifestyle dishonours this responsibility. Genesis 2:15 highlights our role as caretakers and not exploiters of God's creation. It says, "And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the Garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it."
Our Lord Jesus condemns wastefulness and calls for responsibility by emphasising the importance of being faithful and wise stewards, especially in handling resources (Luke 16:10-12). Wastefulness shows a lack of responsibility and gratitude. God honours those who manage resources well, no matter how small. Learning to be content reduces unnecessary spending and waste. It frees us from the endless cycle of consumption. 1 Timothy 6:6 says, "But godliness with contentment is great gain." The Bible teaches us that contentment is far greater than excessive riches, for we brought nothing into the world and it is certain that we can take nothing out of it. When we chase after more than we need, we not only waste resources but also ignore the needs of others. Therefore, instead of waste, we should be generous with our resources, sharing with those in need.
