SUNDAY SERMON
8TH MARCH 2026
THEME FOR 2026
AMAZING GRACE OF GOD (Eph 2:8-9)
TODAY'S TOPIC
DIED TO SIN AND LIVE FOR GOD (ALIVE IN CHRIST) (ROMANS 6:1-4)
[1] What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?
[2] By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
[3] Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
[4] We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
WHAT IS SIN.
sin has many definitions or dimensions
Sin is a king= Sarki
Sin is a slave owner =Bawa
Sin is a Disgrace = Abin kunya
Sin is an alien to man's true nature as God intended it. (Adam and Eve)
The passage starts with a question. SHALL WE GO ON SINING SO THAT GRACE MAY ABOUND ?
we all read it out loud
Then ask your self that same question in relation to the sin you committing
The Apostle Paul confronts a dangerous misunderstanding that grace gives us the permission to keep sining
(A tereble notion we have as humans today)
His answer was God forbid by no means
Grace is not a licence to sin (Romans 6:1-2)
If we are truly saved , we cannot be comfortable in sin.
1 John 3:9 says
[9] No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.
GRACE FROM THE YEARS THEME
GRACE is powerful but it is not a permission to live careless
(example with driving a car carelessly).
Titus 2:11-12
[11] For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. [12] It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,
Grace gives us 3 major things which helps us in our life's as believers
1. It brings salvation. Alheri ya kawo ceton dukkan mutane,
2. It teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly passions
mu ƙi rashin bin Allah da mugayen sha'awace-sha'awacen duniya,
3. It calls us to live soberly and righteously
mu kuma yi zamanmu a duniyar nan da natsuwa, da adalci, da kuma bin Allah,
The one born of God does not continue in habitual sin.
Being alive in christ changes our appetite . It makes us want to live upright so as not to sin against God , so that our relationship will be straight with him.
2. CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST Rom 6:3
[3] Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
Paul reminds believers in the passage that baptism symbolyses
1. Burial of the old life . Mutuwan sohon rayuwa
Buried with Christ Through Baptism
Paul says believers are buried with Christ by baptism.
Baptism has three stages
Death – going under the water represents dying to sin.
Burial – the old life is buried with Christ.
Resurrection – coming out of the water represents new life
2. separation from the power of sin
3. Identification with christ death
He also echoes this truth in Galatians 2;20 where he said 'i have been crucified with christ'
3. BURRIED AND RAISED TO A NEW LIFE ROM 6.4
just as Christ raised from the grave, we rise spiritually which gives us
I new desires . Sabkn mar mari
Ii new direction. sabon hannya
Iii new purpose . Sabon manufa
2 Corinthians 5:17 says if anyone is in christ, he is a new creation.
duk wanda yake na Almasihu sabuwar halitta ne, tsohon al'amari duk ya shuɗe, ga shi, kome ya zama sabo.
You can not truly encounter the risen christ and remain the same.
4. WHAT DOES IT MEAN PRACTICALLY TO DIE TO SIN
1 SIN no longer rules us. Romans 6:14 says sin shall not have dominion over you
14. Domin zunubi ba zai mallake ku ba.
2 we set our minds on things above Colossians 3:1-2
3 walk by the spirit Galatians 5:16 teaches that walking in the Spirit prevents fulfilling the lust of the flesh.
Also dieing to sin is daily surrender .Luke 9:23
5 THE POWER BEHIND HIS NEW LIFE
The new life (transformation) is possible because of Jesus reasons been that
-His death paid for sin ( isaiah 53:5)
-His resurrection defeated death (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)
-His spirit empowers Holy living (acts 1:8)
In the gospel of John 11:25 , Jesuse decreed 'I am the resurrection and life. He is not just giving life - he is life
When we accept Christ, our old sinful nature is considered crucified with Christ.
The Bible confirms this truth:
Galatians 2:20 – “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.”
Colossians 3:3 – “For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.”
This means that the power sin once had over us no longer controls us.
Sin may still tempt us, but it is no longer our master.
As Paul also teaches in Romans 6:6, our old self was crucified with Christ so that the body of sin might be destroyed.
6 .SERIOUS WARNING
if we claim to ge alive in christ but continue comfortably in sin, we must examine ourselves. Matthew 7:16. Says You will know them by their fruits. A changed life is evidence of genuine salvation .
CONCLUSION
Died to sin, alive in Christ means.
The old man is crucified
The grave of sin is behind us
Resurrection power is within us
We walk in newness of life.
Reject sinful habits
Pursue righteousness
Walk in obedience to God
Live by the power of the Holy Spirit
Today ask your self
Have I truly died to sin?
Am I walking in newness of life?
Does my life reflect resurrection power?
Let us not live as though christ is still in the tomb, he is risen
