📖 GREY HAIR AND DYEING IT BLACK. WHAT DOES SCRIPTURE SAY
Many believers ask a sincere question. If a person has natural grey hair by age or any other reason and decides to dye it black, is it sin according to the Bible?
Let us answer this with balance, Scripture, and understanding.
FIRST, WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT GREY HAIR
The Bible presents grey hair as a mark of honor, maturity, and experience.
“The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.” Proverbs 16:31 KJV
“The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.” Proverbs 20:29 KJV
So grey hair is not shameful. It is honorable when joined with a righteous life.
SECOND, DOES SCRIPTURE FORBID DYEING GREY HAIR
No.
There is no command in Scripture that says a believer must not dye grey hair or change hair color.
Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:36 were not about hair dye but about warning against careless oaths and showing the limits of human control.
So dyeing hair is not forbidden by commandment.
THIRD, WHERE THE REAL ISSUE LIES
The Bible consistently teaches that God looks beyond outward appearance to the heart.
“For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 KJV
The concern is not the color of the hair but the motive behind the action.
If dyeing hair is driven by pride, fear of aging, or desire to deceive others, then the heart needs correction.
If it is done modestly, without deception, and without obsession with appearance, Scripture gives liberty.
FOURTH, BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES THAT GUIDE BELIEVERS
Scripture warns against excessive focus on outward beauty.
“Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning…” 1 Peter 3:3 KJV
This does not forbid grooming. It warns against vanity and misplaced priorities.
Paul also reminds us.
“All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient.” 1 Corinthians 6:12 KJV
SO A BELIEVER MUST ASK:
Is this controlling my identity
Is this affecting my witness
Is my conscience clear before God
FINAL BIBLICAL BALANCE
Grey hair is honorable.
Dyeing grey hair black is not a sin by Scripture.
Sin lies in pride, deception, and vanity, not in hair color.
Christian liberty must always be guided by a pure heart and a good conscience.
SIMPLE TRUTH
If the heart is right, the action is permissible.
If the heart is wrong, even lawful things can become sinful.
