On Spiritual Training and Saintly Authority
It is reported that Fudayl b Iyad qs once said,
"We have heard that the Day of Resurrection will begin with recompensing the profligates among the scholars and the bearers of the Quran,before the idol worshippers."
An intelligent person should not be deceived by the (scholars) outward appearance,but should observe the weakness of their conviction and the depravity of their condition and all its implications.The intelligent man should avoid those who conduct themselves in this manner.
He must follow the way of the best of examples,take refuge with Allah through detaching himself from everything other than Him,and persist in the genuine affirmation of divine Oneness.Like this,he will be guided to the straight path.If someone dedicates himself to Him through annihilation (fana) in divine Oneness,his path is the path of Allah.No one can bar him from it.Nothing can harm him, and the cunning and wickedness of his enemy cannot lead him astray.Whoever is with Allah,
Allah is with him.He becomes his Gaurdian and Helper.
Such dedication is not within the means of the spiritual seekers,but Allah the Exalted may take His servant by the hand and lead him to his goal.If the servants quest is genuine,he certainly will not be deprived of the answer to his prayers.If someone knocks on the door,and keeps knocking,he will enter.May Allah protect us and you from the cunning satan and the trickery of a lower self inflicting to evil (al nafs al ammara bi al su).
