TOPIC: BORN OF THE SUPERNATURAL
SUBTOPIC: THE INNER QUALITIES OF A BORN-AGAIN CHILD OF GOD
SCRIPTURE
John 3:5 – “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
John 3:6 – “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
John 3:7 – “Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”
John 3:8 – “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.”
INTRODUCTION
In our last lesson, we heard from our Lord Jesus Christ that we are spirit. We must understand that Jesus was not speaking merely as one of the prophets; He was speaking as the One through whom all things were made. He spoke with complete knowledge of the nature and purpose of His creation.
He was describing to a Jewish leader named Nicodemus the process of being born again and the nature of those who believe in Him.
Being born again is a spiritual process through which the life of God comes into a person's life, bringing that person into a new relationship with God. A born-again child of God is one whose sins have been forgiven and cleansed through faith in Jesus Christ.
When a person genuinely accepts the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the redemptive work He accomplished more than two thousand years ago is credited to that individual. Christ bore the punishment for sin and made the gift of righteousness available to everyone who believes in Him.
Upon receiving Christ, the believer is brought into a new spiritual order. The believer is no longer merely a natural person; he or she is a spiritual being living in a natural body.
However, to live consistently in a way that reflects this new spiritual identity, the spirit within us must be continually nourished through the Word of God.
Just as the physical body requires food and nutrients to remain healthy, the human spirit requires spiritual nourishment to thrive. God's Word is the food that strengthens our spirit and builds our faith.
When a believer fully understands what he or she has become through the work of the Holy Spirit, that believer begins to function in ways that may sometimes appear contrary to the limitations of ordinary human experience.
This is part of what Jesus meant when He said:
WE ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH
Matthew 5:13 – “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”
To understand what Jesus meant by calling us the salt of the earth, we need to consider some of the unique qualities and functions associated with salt.
1. SALT AFFECTS AND ENHANCES TASTE
Salt changes and enhances the taste of food.
Imagine the world without Christianity, without believers who carry the Word of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit. The believer is expected to bring the influence of God's character, truth and love into the world.
As salt affects the environment in which it is placed, the presence of a believer should positively influence the family, workplace, community and society.
2. SALT IS USED FOR PRESERVATION
Salt has historically been used as a preservative. In a similar spiritual sense, God's people are called to preserve righteousness and represent His will in the earth.
The story of Lot and his family gives us an illustration of how God's presence among people can delay judgement. God preserved them until they were brought out of S***m.
In the same way, believers have a responsibility to stand for righteousness, preach the Gospel and serve as witnesses of God's truth in a world that desperately needs Him.
This is one reason you must never take your salvation lightly. Remember that Jesus Christ is coming again.
3. SALT IS IMPORTANT TO THE HUMAN BODY
Salt also has important functions within the human body. In the same way, the presence of believers should contribute positively to the spiritual and moral health of the society around them.
A believer should not merely exist in the world; his or her presence should make a meaningful difference.
4. SALT WAS USED IN COVENANT RITUALS
In the Old Testament, salt was associated with offerings and covenant.
Leviticus 2:13 – “And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.”
Numbers 18:19 – “...it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.”
Salt therefore carried significant covenant symbolism in the Old Testament. Today, believers are called to live as people who represent and uphold God's covenant through their lives, faith and conduct.
5. THE BELIEVER IS CALLED TO STAND AGAINST THE WORKS OF DARKNESS
Throughout Scripture, God's people are called to stand against evil, resist the works of darkness and proclaim God's truth.
The presence of a genuine believer in a family, community or society should bring the influence of righteousness, prayer, truth and the Gospel.
6. THE BELIEVER IS A WITNESS AGAINST THE WORKS OF DARKNESS
Judgement belongs to God, but believers have been entrusted with the responsibility of preaching the Gospel and calling people to repentance.
Our assignment on earth is to shine the light of Christ, proclaim the Gospel and help people turn away from the path that leads to destruction.
To accomplish this assignment, spirituality is essential.
No believer can fully function in the purpose of God without becoming conscious of his or her spiritual identity and origin.
SALT CAN LOSE ITS UNIQUE TASTE
Scientifically, pure sodium chloride does not lose its salty taste. However, Jesus used the imagery of salt losing its savour to describe a believer whose spiritual distinctiveness has been compromised.
One way to understand this spiritually is through the picture of dilution.
When salt is excessively diluted, its distinctiveness becomes difficult to recognise. In the same way, when a believer allows the values and systems of the world to dominate his or her life, the uniqueness of the Christian witness can become weakened.
A believer who continually compromises with worldly values may gradually lose the visible evidence of the spiritual life that God has given him or her.
The Christian life is a life of power, influence, distinction and spiritual responsibility.
You were not born again merely to exist. You were born again to shine, to influence your world, to represent Christ and to fulfil God's purpose for your life.
Therefore, guard your spiritual identity. Feed your spirit with God's Word. Walk with the Holy Spirit. Refuse to allow the world to dilute the life of Christ in you.
You are the salt of the earth. Do not lose your savour.

Thank You, Lord, for choosing me for Your glory and honour. In the name of Jesus Christ, I proclaim that I am a kingdom salt on the earth. Amen.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I decree that my season to manifest the glory of God has come. Amen.
From today, I will shine in every area of my life and fulfil the purpose of God for my existence, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
I receive grace to remain spiritually conscious, rooted in God's Word and filled with the Holy Spirit. I will not lose my savour or allow the world to dilute my faith, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
