ABBA FATHER (1)
Romans 8:15-16 (AMPC)
For [the Spirit which] you have now received [is] not a spirit of slavery to put you once more in bo***ge to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption [the Spirit producing sonship] in [the bliss of] which we cry, Abba (Father)! Father! The Spirit Himself [thus] testifies together with our own spirit, [assuring us] that we are children of God.
When used in reference to a father, the term ‘Abba’ reflects not just the respect one has for a father, but also a very dear and intimate relationship. It is by the help of the Spirit we call God, “Abba Father.”
The spirit of bo***ge which our text above refers to, is the spirit of the law and Old Covenant, while the Spirit of adoption is the Spirit of grace and the New Covenant. In The Passion Translation, our text above says, “And you did not receive the “spirit of religious duty,” leading you back into the fear of never being good enough. But you have received the “Spirit of full acceptance,” enfolding you into the family of God. And you will never feel orphaned, for as he rises up within us, our spirits join him in saying the words of tender affection, “Beloved Father!” For the Holy Spirit makes God’s fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being, “You are God’s beloved child!”
The Holy Spirit strengthens our conviction that we are God’s legitimate children and members of His household, (Eph. 2:13). He enables us to have a free and intimate relationship with God as our Father. He makes us know we are born of God, understanding the unconditional love God has for us, and He helps us know we are always righteous and perfect in the sight of God because of our faith in Jesus, (Heb. 10:14-18).
Prayer:
Abba Father! I thank you that you are my Father! Thank you for making me your child and thank you for your Spirit in me.
