THE GOSPEL AND DELAYED EXPECTATION (Part 4) Recovering from Disappointment
TEXT: The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18 (ESV)
MESSAGE
Disappointment is one of life’s hardest punches. You waited, you prayed, you believed, and still, the door didn’t open. The opportunity passed. The relationship ended. The healing didn’t come. It feels like hope was crushed, and it can make you question:
Did I hear God wrong?
Why didn’t it happen?
Is it even worth hoping again?
The Gospel gives us the courage to hope again.
Jesus understands disappointment , He wept at Lazarus’ tomb even though He knew resurrection was coming. He felt the pain of rejection, delay, and unanswered desires. That’s what makes Him the perfect Savior not only does He redeem us, He walks with us through the crushing moments.
So how do you recover when expectations break your heart?
1. Be Honest with God
God isn’t intimidated by your emotions. He welcomes your tears, confusion, and anger. David often poured his heart out in the Psalms and God called him a man after His heart. Healing begins with honesty.
_Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.1 Peter 5:7_
2. Remember That Delay is Not Defeat.
Just because something didn’t happen when or how you expected doesn’t mean your story is over. God often brings resurrection after what looks like death. Keep trusting the ending is still being written.
3. Learn the Lesson, Don’t Lose the Faith.
Every disappointment carries a lesson. Sometimes it's preparation, redirection, or protection. Instead of letting it break your faith, let it build your discernment and dependence on God.
4. Keep Showing Up
Disappointment tempts you to withdraw, isolate, and stop believing. Don’t. Keep praying. Keep worshipping. Keep showing up to God’s presence even if it hurts. Healing often comes when we remain in His presence.
