The highlights of my pastoral visit to St. Mary’s Eucharistic Parish, Nri, today, 9 August 2026, included praying for the spiritual and temporal well-being of the parish; confirming more than a hundred people in the faith; blessing the Stations of the Cross on the parish premises; and receiving a warm welcome from the parishioners.

I thank everyone who collaborated with the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Martin Anyabolu, and Fr. Gerald Ejimbonwu, in making today’s event a success. Your support is very much appreciated.

As I encouraged all who were present: "In order not to be swept away by the different hurdles of life, 'let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who, for the joy set before Him, endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2)'".

Today, 8th August, 2026, we were at St. Andrew’s, Adazi-Nnukwu, for the Awka Diocesan Catholic Altar Servers Association of Nigeria (CASAN) Day Celebration and Old Boys’ Reunion. This Association has a record of inspiring many young boys to desire and eventually become priests.

With the conviction that one who is nearer to the altar is, correspondingly, closer to God, some of these altar servers, like their patron saint, St. John Berchmans, regularly wake up early to serve Mass daily. They rightly see serving at the altar as a supreme privilege.

I warmly thank them for their service in their different parishes. I thank them for the immense help they render to priests and to the Church. I thank their parents, who allow them to offer these services; I thank their chaplains and everyone who supports them.

Who are these like stars appearing,
these, before God’s throne who stand?
Each a golden crown is wearing;
who are all this glorious band?
Alleluia! Hark, they sing,
praising loud their heavenly King.

~ Hymn written by Theobald Heinrich Schenck

It was not any cleverly invented myths that we were repeating when we brought you the knowledge of the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; we had seen his majesty for ourselves.

Lord, nourish the lives of your people. Amen!

Through your sacred ministers you are present in our midst as the shepherd of our souls; never cease to guide us through their teaching and encouragement.

May St. John Vianney, pray for all priests!

"You open wide your hand, O Lord; you grant our desires."

We can never outdo God in generosity. However, whatever we desire to offer in charity must first be placed in His hands so that He may bless it and multiply it.

I reflected on these words, drawing from the readings for the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, during my Pastoral Visit to St. Francis Catholic Church, Enugwu-Ukwu, on 2nd August 2026.

I thank Fr. Peter Val Uzoezie, Fr. Paschal Omaga, the Parish Pastoral Council members, the various statutory bodies, and everyone who contributed to the success of the visit. I also congratulate the newly confirmed faithful.

As I watched these children deliver their creative and educational presentations during the Silver Jubilee Celebration of the Awka Diocesan Holy Childhood Association, I appreciated again the importance of training our children so that they may distinguish themselves in both character and learning.

As the Scriptures remind us: "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it"(Proverbs 22:6).

Without proper moral formation, our children may not fully benefit from or attain the academic excellence we envision for them. I sincerely thank the chaplains, parents, animators, and everyone who contributed to the formation of these children and made today's celebration at Assumption Catholic Church, Nimo, a success.

Lord Jesus, in times past you have lighted the way for your people through wise and holy leaders; may Christians always enjoy this sign of your loving kindness.

– Lord, save your people.
