He had once been eager.
He stood with a straight posture, his armor gleaming in the sun, but now…
Nathan, a young and vibrant man whose heart once burned with purpose, answered the call without hesitation. But somewhere along the line, life grew comfortable. Between being equipped and being deployed, he slept.
At first, it was only for a while.
“Just resting,” he’d say. After all, the field looked quiet, and others seemed to be doing fine. The battle didn’t seem urgent. He’d been told to wait for orders, so he waited and waited until waiting became comfort, and comfort became sleep.
Heaven watched, not in anger but in silence, because the Commander had not forgotten him.Nathan still had the skills. He still had the capacity. The mission was still valid. But time was slipping away.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. His once gleaming armor gathered dust. His prayers grew shorter. The passion that once woke him at dawn was now replaced with long naps and laziness. Slowly, Nathan began to fade.
The world didn’t stop because Nathan was not fulfilling his mandate.
Men rose, served, and grew. Those who were ready kept training and became better at what they did. They gained mastery.
When Nathan finally resumed duty, he felt weak. His legs trembled, not from age but from disuse, and his armor was rusty because he hadn’t trained for months. He thought it was no big deal and continued living as usual. He didn’t realize that rest had quietly turned into slumber. He noticed he felt different, but he couldn’t explain why.
“I think I’m just stressed,” he said. “I need more rest to regain the strength I used yesterday.”
Then he paused, realizing he hadn’t done any work the previous day.
Am I… he thought, but quickly waved it off.
The Commander watched in despair.
The next morning, Nathan woke up, brushed, had his bath, and set off for the campground as usual. That day, it was announced that the soldiers would be going to war in a neighboring town that had been attacked.
Something unexpected happened. For the first time, Nathan felt afraid. His heart raced, and adrenaline rushed through his veins. The cold morning suddenly felt hot.
“Armies, array!” came a thunderous voice.
Everyone stood in line except Nathan.“Nathan! Nathan!”
“I said array!”
He snapped out of his thoughts, startled.
“Armors!” the captain shouted, and everyone raised their shiny armor. The sun hit each piece and it shone brightly.
People began to giggle. Nathan looked around, confused. The captain approached him and said, “You haven’t changed your armor?”
Embarrassment washed over him. Everyone who once looked up to him now seemed disappointed.
Feeling uneasy, a friend of his who had a higher rank quietly granted him leave.
Nathan went home sad. That night, he had a dream.
It rained heavily. Men sowed, harvested, and served with joy and purpose. He saw a man sleeping in a shelter and ran to wake him up. But when he turned the man over, he froze. It was him.He saw himself sleeping while others toiled under the rain.
Then he heard a voice:“You were equipped for a mission, not a vacation.
The harvest is ripe. The call still stands. Will you rise?”
Nathan woke up trembling, tears streaming down his face. He cried like a child longing for his mother. He realized how long he had mistaken rest for retirement.
He was never meant to sleep through his assignment. The gifts God, the Commander, gave him weren’t for display. They were for service.
So he rose, slowly and painfully, but with determination.
With every step, his strength returned.
With every prayer, the rust fell away. And with every act of obedience, the light on his armor grew brighter.
Yes, the sleeping soldier was awake again, not because the battle had changed, but because he remembered why he was called.
Reflection
Don’t grow complacent after being equipped.
God’s purpose demands productivity.
You have been equipped for a mission, not a vacation.
